The discourse out there is pretty bad after Starfield

It’s amazing how the tweet by the dev, who is actually qualified to talk about this only has 230K views compared to the other unqualified tweet that has 3.7 million views, good thing is in reality it probably doesn’t have that many views, there’s a guy I follow on YouTube who said he tweeted something privately that only he could see and when he returned to look at the tweet it somehow had 12 views even though nobody else could see it lol, I think it’s clear most tweets don’t actually get the views it says under them, too many tweets with millions of views and barely any interactions, still it’s clear that way more people saw the misinformed tweet here going by the amount of likes and that sucks.

Hopefully Bethesda finds a way to get more more “modern” for ES6 to avoid useless topics like these, although I suspect people will pick the game apart over other reasons though.

One of the reasons why I love the other era lol, in the PS thread a few months ago I saw a user straight up console warring talking about how a future MS CEO would shut the whole gaming division down while concerned about MS owning ABK being anti competitive, like which one is it… and I doubt any MS CEO can actually get away with shutting down a division that will be bringing in 20+ billion dollars in revenue a year and will only keep growing, such arguments are pure wishful thinking.

Is sad that cultist can’t reconcile that a console maker that is more profitable and more than twice as profitable as of next week won’t be going anywhere.

Even sadder that cultists can’t understand that one console maker dropping out of the race and leaving the other virtually unchallenged wouldn’t benefit them in the least, but if I’ve learned anything since 2016 it’s that people will go against their own self interests so long as it perceivably hurts the ones that dislike in some way.

I’d go even earlier, this sentiment was very prevalent in the second half of the 7th generation, I remember seeing a lot of the Xbox hate starting in those 2010-2013 years… This is also why I think Microsoft maybe lowering their Cloud ambitions a bit and going harder on consoles wouldn’t be such a bad thing, if they can be be more competitive and take at least 10% of PS’s market share it would probably avoid Sony being comfortable enough to raise prices years after a generation has already begun, and yes I’m aware that Microsoft also sadly followed suit but I don’t think Sony would have done it if they thought they had a dangerous competitor.

Ah yes the…Horizon was the second…GT7 the third…Gow R the fourth…FF:XVI the fifth…BG3 was supposed to be the 6th but now it doesnt count. So the Sixth! The sixth coming of Jesus Christ himself.

That is why I’m not bothered to much about Microsoft acquiring(within reason of course) studios or publishers to remain competitive. The market leaders(a.k.a Sony and others) has been too comfortable in their Ivory towers with their army of defenders/fanboys in the media or social media doing their bidding. Industry shakeup is happening right now, and that is why the media is on a smear campaign against Xbox or MS, and we should expect them to continue wether it’s the Xbox tax on metacritic or the millions of negative clickbait articles. One thing is for sure, Xbox , being backed by big money, is causing massive pressure and fear to the status quo, and they are lashing out.

Made even more laughable when you realise microsoft have been in video gaming longer than Sony have, by about 15 years i think, and have been in the console game for 22 years now, only 6 less than Sony, and 5 or 6 years longer than the legendary Sega.

Always amazes me when people think MS are some fly by night operation, just messing about in game consoles and ready to just stop when they get bored.

Flight Sim predates Excel, pretty crazy if you think about it.

Xbox is big ($16B a year business), profitable (‘only’ single digits profit margins, but still in the black, and not unlike Sony) and is the most important and most promising consumer facing product line from Microsoft, something the corporation is very interested in.

And now XGS+Zenimax+ABK is probably the biggest centralized entity in games publishing. Tencent is bigger in terms of revenue, but it comes from minority stakes in tons of other companies.

I may be out of the loop but Spider mans release seems like a wet fart coming up. No hype, same shit we’ve seen before and Sony has almost no details of any future 1st party titles.

MS even had their own hardware back in the 80’s in the MSX, which did pretty well in Asia at the time especially Japan. the legendary Metal Gear series made it’s debut on the platform.

If Spiderman 2 breaks sales records, it’ll simply reconfirm the unending bad taste in video games of a large section of people… who buy video games.

But nothing will surprise me, i.e. just look at the usual top sellers lists: EA sports stuff, GTA 5, some derivative AAA collectathons we’ve all played a billion times already & whatever cinematic AAA “press triangle for stealth takedown” Sony spews out with a variation on the same set pieces they’ve been producing since Uncharted 1.

The two best PS4-gen exclusives on the Sony side were Detroit Become Human & Bloodborne. The former got unfairly trashed by critics & the latter didn’t sell so well relative to its hype (hence why it’s never had a remaster).

But Spiderman 1 (which I absolutely hated in every which way possible) sold something like 30 million copies.

So… I won’t hold my breath.

I highly recommend everyone interested in the industry watch the Power On documentary about the creation of Xbox, even if you hate the ecosystem. It’s absolutely fascinating and provides a lot of context for some of their decisions, which seem from the outside/with hindsight to be nonsensical.

That point you made about consumer-facing products is part of the reason Xbox survived some rough years, IIRC.

Reminds me when Jim Sterling once said that MS shouldn’t have “bothered” Sony in the industry (paraphrasing here). Btw they gave the lowest score there was for Starfield. I dunno, I’m thinking this bias thing is actually real.

This is how Phil is pushing gaming internally at MS:

Gaming makes sense for MS, imo, as the focus on consumer. It’s a $200B TAM with 3B people playing and both of these numbers are growing by 10%+/year. I can see no other clear consumer category with this TAM where Microsoft has the product truth today and customer demand that we have in Gaming and where the disruption that is happening in the business plays to some of Microsoft’s long term strengths (cloud and subs).

Sterling is a joke and only seems to create drama for the sake of clicks. No amount of decent journalism comes out of that person imo. But so is a lot of YouTube actually.

It’s sad because I used to like a lot of their content and rants against abusive company practices, but then it got to a point where they’re not so different than the angry and toxic gamers you see on Twitter.

I thought the old Destructoid “objective review” of Final Fantasy XIII was hilarious. It used to about making a point by being abrasive and confrontational, but somewhere along the line Sterling stopped having any point except for the abrasiveness.

Ingredients for rage.

Indeed, the more Playstation fans feel they’re missing out by not having an Xbox, the more enraged they get.

Indeed, I feel like their content changed over time and lost its impact as it used to be more meaningful and well articulated and a lot of it made sense, now it just feels like rage for the sake of rage and I don’t find their arguments to be as good as they once were. Which sucks as I don’t know if it’s a trend they follow in order to get clicks for the sake of getting more money or if it’s really how they feel and how they always were!

Really wish the way stuff is monetized or at least incentivized would change so we stop seeing that kind of content get prioritized by content creators.
