If we are going by rumors, then it would seem only a select few and the big games will stay exclusive. This seems more like they are transitioning to a digital platform like Steam that still releases exclusives once in a while on their platform like the Half-life Alyx VR game. Also, more platforms could refer to IOS, Android and other streaming platforms like Luna. now that the EU has broken those walled gardens.
I also think if Xbox can be like steam and unify all their stores under one it would be much more enticing to the casuals if you can buy your games and play it on basically any device than just one.
I think the move to ARM is that reason. It will provide a more uniformed code base and make it possible for games to run on Xbox and mobile. They’ll still need to support X86 though for PC. Seeing RE4 and now Death Stranding running on iPhone just shows that the mobile ecosystem has reached the point where it can run AAA games natively, and iPhones and high end Android phones capable of running those games sell in the hundreds of millions every year. The growth potential there, even if you only capture a small part of the market, is insane.
Some seem to think that the mobile strategy is a bad one (at least from the Sooners on those other forums) but considering mobile is the biggest market and that some big games (PUBG for example) actually can make more money on mobile than on PC/consoles and that several big, more developing markets like India have more phones than PC or consoles, I think the strategy makes a lot of sense.
One store to rule them all!
I’ve already said my piece on this but yes, this should be the end goal, one store across all platforms whether it’s PC, console, mobile etc buy once play it anywhere you want
People say mobile gamers don’t want to spend full game prices for games like console players do but if you give them a game that can be played across multiple devices with one purchase or better yet, have all these games available natively via Game Pass, they’d get a ton of subscribers on mobile
Mobile performance is fast becoming very viable for big games, we’ve already seen it with RE4, something like a native FH5 would do numbers on mobile I think
Totally agree.
It certainly does. Over a billion phones sold yearly. Also, right now Xbox would be the first on mobile to have a slew of triple A games of their own. They could have all ABK, Zenimax and XGS games natively ready for mobile. This could even help them to gain some market share in selling their own phones. I think when this happens it would no longer be a big deal to release their games on play station. I assume Sony would need to do something similar to remain in the industry because Gamepass takes off on mobile I would expect Amazon, Tencent, Google and even Apple to get serious in the space.
Apple already has Apple Arcade, so MS really needs their own App Store to bring Gamepass to iOS. They could still sell games on the App Store though like they do on Steam.
You know, if all three decided to put games everywhere I’d be fine with it.
Any sane person should be fine with that
But then we would win and not Sony, NIntendo or Xbox. We can’t have that.
Haha, yes of course. What I mean is that I would be fine with Xbox going third party if they all did.
Yeah no that’s illegal.
Yeah. And even Xbox going third party without the others, I wouldn’t be against that just because I’m a gatekeeper who doesn’t want others to play those games, but because this move would mean less competition in the console market and would just appear like a competitor gave up, and no one should want that even PS and Nintendo fans.
I think we have the same position then.
This is pretty much where I’m at on this as well.
I’m pretty much indifferent. The reality is with where MS and Sony are heading, I am probably just going to migrate to PC in the future where I can just play both companies releases with a single device.
I need a computer anyway and if it can play both Xbox and PS games, well, win-win.
I think only issue with pc at the moment are the insane prices for GPUs
You’re not wrong there.
I’ll probably just look into one of the handhelds like Steam Deck 2 or whatever else comes in the next few years, I think the tech and software technology like DLSS is only going to get better and better and will do wonders for a lot of modern games going forward that even lower spec devices will be able to play games relatively well
I’m already perfectly happy with my S and don’t care too much for the whole premium tier Series X/PS5 hardware so I wont be going for expensive PC stuff either
If Xbox hardware goes the way of the dodo going forward then I’ll just go to PC, no reason to get a PS5 that has no Game Pass and will be bringing all their games to PC anyway
I like the steamdeck but it really makes me miss the convenience of a standard console - having a switch and just being able to stick a game in and play it without any issues is so nice.
I have a steam deck and pretty much the only thing I use it for is Emulation Station.
I finally beat Jaws on the NES.
