The Big ol' Xbox 3rd Party Releases Discussion Thread (HiFi, SoT, Pentiment, Grounded) (Part 1)

The Sony COO/CFO wouldn’t be talking about “aggressively” bringing games to PC if there were no reason to change things.

On top of that, the Insomniac leaks showed they were kicking around a 6 month window between console and PC.

It’s going to get shorter.

The console market in revenue hasn’t grown in ages but dev costs are dramatically increasing. The only answers to that problem are to slash cost and/or get the games to more people.

I think Helldivers 2 doing so well on PC with a day one releases is going to lead to Sony testing more day one releases.

Read the article again. They aren’t making enough money which is why the Sony COO made the statements they did and why they just laid off 900 people and have been closing a bunch of studios again.

You all are way too attached to this exclusive-centric business practice when console market is not growing.

Well, I read the article and there’s nothing new in it. We all know PS is eyeing PC more aggressively, that is still not the same thing as dropping your (console) exclusives on the other consoles.

Nintendo branching out in movies and theme parks? Not really the same thing either is it?

True but I think his either is that the console industry isn’t enough anymore to support itself. Each of the platform publisher is branching out to grow their business. I don’t think Xbox dropping console exclusives is part of their growth plan as it doesn’t scale. I think it’s more of a result of something else maybe the idea of opening their wall gardens and bringing in other storefronts.

But the article is talking about console exclusives, as i said, it’s obvious Sony’s looking at PC since it’s not that much of a competitor and they are releasing games there 2+ years after the initial release, i think sooner than later they will shorten the window to 1 year exclusivity for some big games, but still that has nothing to do with releasing games on the competitor consoles.

Sony laid off people, just like every single company, happens when you hire a crazy amount of people during the pandemic, but they aimed at PSVR studios and people mostly, with some bigger ones like Insomniac getting hit too tho.

I’m not attached to any exclusive thing, i just look at the operating income from Sony:

And compare it with other giant gaming companies like Ubisoft, Activision, Take Two etc, and realize Sony’s making way more money, i understand they are privileged to be in the position they are with Playstation, and i can see why they don’t want to risk losing that position by releasing games on other platforms, specially consoles.

Console hardware numbers are stagnant since the 2000’s, that’s a fact, but the market has changed a lot, we’re in the digital and MTX era, people’s spending hundreds and hundreds of Euros on stuff like Fornite skins, or player packs from Fifa, etc, and companies like Sony, MS or Valve are getting 30% of that money. Also on the console market we have Sony for example getting 70€ yearly from 40-50 million players just to play online.

Basically people’s spending way more money on average now compared to 20 years ago, that’s why i said Sony and Nintendo are printing money.

Greedy company always want more money, nothing new

Microsoft can also afford to take the risk as a company. Nintendo/Sony isn’t going to risk their console business as the console is their business. The console fails, they fail as a business. This is especially true for Sony who relies heavily on third party revenue splits and services.

Hide this, or else the whole argument falls apart!

I deleted it, its been beaten to death and I can’t be bothered. Number goes up must be good argument.

Sony is not printing money, their margins are under 5%. They’re making a lot and keeping barely anything. They’re diversifying and it’s obvious that outside of Nintendo’s excellent Switch attach rate that console exclusives do not help Sony or Microsoft the way people think.

You are posting charts without understanding the context lol, profit margins are down.

Anyway, I’ll end this little discussion here. It’s amazing that so many of you think that Sony can continue 300m+ games and be just cool with their current business strategy when their executives say it’s not sustainable.

But ah well, I will be right in the end.

Mindshare as I stated. Most casual consumers aren’t the going to come to Xboxera to get clarity on a headline about an “Xbox game looking better on PS5”. They will just make a decision based on that alone.

Okay? And? What does it have to with my post? You’re saying this as if it’s some big gotcha when it’s just moving the goalpost. I didn’t mention PC at all.

So most casual consumers are going to watch DF instead?

I will say one thing Xbox does do very well is death by a thousands cuts, and I think this is a prime example.

They won’t watch DF, but they’ll see takes on Twitter about DF results. Xbox porting games to other consoles was tweeted by popular non-video game accounts. So word of mouth does travel on social media

That sounds like good promotion for a passion project that would not have gotten good word of mouth. Also interesting to ask AI

The topic of shadow quality in the game Hi-Fi Rush being better on the PS5 compared to the Xbox has been noted by several sources, but it doesn’t appear to have sparked significant controversy among the casual gaming audience. The differences are mainly in the shadows being slightly crisper on the PS5, with faster load times also mentioned123. However, all console versions of the game offer a largely identical experience in terms of gameplay and graphics, with the PC version capable of higher frame rates on capable hardware1. The game was released for Windows and Xbox Series X/S on January 25, 2023, and later for PlayStation 5 on March 19, 20241. It seems that while the technical differences have been observed and reported by experts, they haven’t led to a widespread debate or controversy among casual players.

Thought I would check another one

There wasn’t a major controversy about Hi-Fi Rush’s shadow quality specifically impacting casual gamers on Playstation. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Hi-Fi Rush Launch: The game gained popularity through a surprise shadow launch on Xbox Game Pass. This means it released with little marketing hype.
  • Success: Despite the lack of hype, Hi-Fi Rush did well thanks to positive word-of-zbędmouth and being readily available on Game Pass.
  • Shadow Quality Mention: There have been discussions about a potential discrepancy in shadow quality between the Xbox and Playstation versions, but it wasn’t a widespread controversy, especially among casual gamers.

It’s more likely that casual gamers enjoyed the core gameplay, art style, and music of Hi-Fi Rush rather than focusing on graphical details like shadows.

But why?

There are a few reasons why people might perceive a controversy even when there isn’t a major one:

  • Limited Information: News about the shadow quality might have been present in gaming forums or niche publications that casual gamers wouldn’t frequent. So, someone who casually plays Hi-Fi Rush might not be aware of the discussion.
  • Focus on Negativity: News outlets often focus on negativity and controversy because it attracts more attention. So, even if there wasn’t a widespread issue, a single article mentioning shadow quality could create the impression of a controversy.
  • Confirmation Bias: People tend to seek out information that confirms their existing beliefs. If someone hears about the shadow quality difference, they might be more likely to notice it and believe it’s a bigger deal than it actually is.
  • Social Media Amplification: Social media can amplify small issues, making them seem more widespread. A few disgruntled tweets about shadows could create the impression of a larger movement.

In this case, it seems like the shadow quality discussion wasn’t a major point of contention for most Hi-Fi Rush players, especially casual ones.

Shadow quality means nothing. SSD load time comparisons would have been the big “omg so bad lul” talking point if it hadn’t ended up being a nothing burger. Even the Series S fud over the comments from Remedy and Baldur’s Gate 3 ended up being nothing.

If there’s a grassgate difference in GTA6 then you might actually get the dogshit discourse but so far this gen graphical differences have been minor blips in comparison to what they were in the early years of last gen.

I asked Microsoft Bing’s copilot:

“Is hifi rush better on Ps5 or series?”

Bing replied:

“In summary, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions provide a similar gaming experience, with the PS5 having improved shadows and slightly faster load times.”

So Bing says the PS5 is better.

You can start trying to work out how many people are watching digital foundry, how many people ask AI, and how many people choose which console they have get based on the social network formerly known as Twitter if you like, but you’d have to be pretty dug in to say it doesn’t matter that Microsoft’s own search engine says the PS5 version is better than the Xbox version.

Again, despite having been said repeatedly, it doesn’t matter if it’s just the shadows, the question people will ask is “what’s better?” not “what’s got the best shadows?” In either case, the answer, unfortunately, will be PS5.

The question is, does that affect casual gamers, so you can ask it that as well? Who is searching for the best platform to play hi-fi rush on at the best experience? The answer is PC in that case or Switch if you prefer mobility, or xbox if you prefer crosssaves and not paying fullprice.

Thats the whole point, every bit of nuance or thought is sucked out of the discussion because people refuse to accept their position is not the majority.

Obviously not but they are more likely to see a headline from IGN/hear about it from a friend, once again, without context, details, or specifics. “Word of mouth is the best form of promotion” x “ bad news travels fast” =you get my drift.

That Hifi Rush thing may not matter to hardcore gamers posting on a video game message board who are already fans of Xbox but it can certainly be a deterrent from casual consumers entering the ecosystem…which Xbox is certainly trying to get to happen.

But ya know, thats just “console war” talk apparently. I can’t tell if that level of dismissal is from living within the vacuum of the hobby or just straight up disingenuous.
