The Big ol' Xbox 3rd Party Releases Discussion Thread (HiFi, SoT, Pentiment, Grounded) (Part 1)

Yep, they seem to have realised quite early on that chasing bleeding-edge graphics is probably not the best idea. The graphical stylings of their biggest games don’t really warrant it, though better performance is something I’d like to see.

I don’t know. I feel more like Nintendo and PlayStation are more to blame. Both dominated the market but failed to evolve or grow it. Xbox tried to grow it and had some strides during the 360 Sony was supposed to compete but came up with the cinematic games that is now spiraling cost out of range. With the PS4 they were content to try crushing Xbox instead of growing the industry. Nintendo decided rather to carve out a place for themselves and to some extent they did set the way forward for growth in the handheld space. Now the market has matured for consoles and started to shrink which is causing layoffs everywhere and Microsoft is once again trying to rebuild the market and it’s causing friction.

If we are looking at the industry, then I don’t think just releasing great games will save it or improve it. To me it needs to be rebuilt for the modern day and to be relevant again. The fact that one console has to suffer for the other to gain traction is problematic. Personally, I think there is a need for some sort of unified system like we have for movies. I think every store on one hardware is the best, Xbox can move with that idea. I think DF did a good podcast on this.

I’m not much of a gaming podcast viewer these days but I did decide to watch Digital Foundry’s podcast where they were discussing a potential PC Xbox. It is funny how John sort of realizes in real-time how an Xbox that plays Console and Steam will make his beloved PlayStation irrelevant … it was entertaining just for that😆

I agree, there’s too many factors influencing the influencers so to speak.

The thing I personally find most sad is the infighting in the community, places like this is just not the same. Too much mud slinging. That goes for both “sides”; the defensive corpo faction and the old school fans. At least that’s how I feel and that has affected my enthusiasm a bit.

Outside of this thread I think overall the discourse here is as healthy as can be, especially when it’s focused on games and not business. It’s the slowest time of year so the more sensational stories dominate as the press tries to make ad revenue.

It’s better here than elsewhere, that’s for sure.

Still disappointed in a lot of the discourse around this, both here and in general. Slowly pushing me away I feel.

Xbox not having the best version of their own first party game is typical Xbox at this point.

Also thinking that it has no bearing on anything and is inconsequential when Xbox’s mindshare is currently in the shitter is…a choice lol.

How is it consequential? I’m genuinely curious outside of Original position arguments.

You realize the best version of every Xbox and PlayStation game is always PC right?

I think it only really matters to the console warriors in the end. The fact that the PC version has the same shadows shows it isn’t some bigger controversy.

Maybe if they have a monster PC lol.

PC ports are still in large, pretty shoddy on launch.

It’s like PC is said to be the definitive platform for gaming, but then you see all the asterisks. PC is not for everyone.

Shoddy ports are the exception and not the rule.

That’s just delusional lmao, full exclusives? Yea, that’s already happening and i can see Sony thinking about shortening the exclusivity window to 1 year from 2+ fairly soon, but console exclusivity? Wet dream material.

Reality is Sony and Nintendo are printing money this generation so far, and there’s no reason to change their strategy, specially to put games on a console that’s getting outsold like almost 4 to 1 nowadays.

Would be cool if it happened tho, and would be funny to see forums in case it did, but we gotta be realistic

I could maybe see Sony doing it in a couple of years. But I can never see Nintendo ever doing it lol

How are they printing money. Nintendo I can see but Sony. You don’t bring the CFO in when you’re printing money.

They’re all printing money but it’s not generating enough profits to satisfy the level of investments they’re pouring into these AAA games.
