The Big ol' Xbox 3rd Party Releases Discussion Thread (HiFi, SoT, Pentiment, Grounded) (Part 1)

Jeff Grubb and Stephen Totilo heard about SoT being developed for PS5 last year, well before it was announced, so it couldn’t have been that secret…

I’m not sure how regularly the PS store data refreshes - daily, hourly, by the minute, etc. etc.

But that surely will have a bearing on these sorts of things. It could well be that lots of preorders take place on one day, but few the next, or that being No.1 in a period where loads of preorders take place is worth more than being number 1 when barely any are, etc. etc.

Whatever the case, I don’t think it’s insignificant to be no.1, especially on a weekend when people have a bit more time to turn their attention to leisure pursuits, etc.

Rare mentioned themselves in the interview that it was super secret, frosted windows, small area of the studio, no Sea of Thieves t-shirts on when visiting Sony, etc. It was definitely a super secret thing, so the pool of people that could leak the info was as small as possible.

I think it’s fair to say PS5 ports can easily leak due to word of mouth because not all people that work on a port is going to be secretive about it. It’s in people’s nature to gossip, so there’s bound to be some with loose lips.

I think it’s fair to say Jez has sources within Microsoft, but Microsoft is a very large organization, so there are many employees that aren’t aware of stuff happening with their 23+ studios. So, Jez could be right that his sources said there isn’t a port in the works, but it still doesn’t mean it’s true.

Anyway, we’re uncharted territories, so not many are going to be aware of what’s happening, so it’s best to wait and see

Yeah.

Full quote here.

  • ”This is the first time in Rare’s 40-year history that we’re developing on a Sony platform, which is incredible. It was quite surreal for us, getting on a call and being presented with a set of slides about a platform that we never thought we would get an opportunity to go ship on. But honestly, for our tech team, it was like: ‘Let’s just get kits in and start experimenting and figuring this out.’ We had them hidden away in a secret part of the studio with frosted windows and no one could peek in. It was excitement as much as anything else.”

  • According to Neate, Rare is working with co-developers who have PlayStation experience, and Sony itself has been extremely helpful, holding regular catchup calls and making its own tech staff available whenever needed – even when the project was still top secret. “If we went and visited their studios, we had to do it not wearing Sea of Thieves T-shirts, as I’m sure you can imagine,” says Neate.

Obviously sources didn’t get the memo as I recall when the Hi-Fi Rush rumor started Rand and Jez on the podcast said they had heard rumors of SOT but obviously never confirmed it. The game being done in secret seems to be maybe so other devs under Xbox wouldn’t know or start something. I guess all the Ever-Wild time was spent on this.

I’m just saying Pre-orders doesn’t mean success unless these pre-orders are in the millions which I highly doubt. Also, it has now fallen to number 23 on the list and will probably go down more. PS5 Pre-orders | Official PlayStation™Store US

Yeah, I suspect it’ll be a while before we can even start to work out what’s happened with the sales.

Tbh, I hope that it’s enough of a success that it’s a decent shop window to advertise Xbox’s games… but not TOO much of a success that Microsoft say “right, let’s get everything on Playstation.”

If only they were that helpful with offering FF7R Trilogy for Xbox. You know. :smirk:

The Remake trilogy isn’t Sony’s game to port, SE made the decision to make is console exclusive.

The thumbnail for this thread keeps making me think of the Portuguese flag lol. :portugal:

I’m not saying I trust this biscuit guy, I’m just saying I don’t trust anything jez says anymore.

MS just opened they gates of hell. The main discussion for every game from now on will be whether or not it will be or when it will be available on ps5. Such a great job to hijack its own brand, well done MS!

It will be also very fun to see the reviews of SOT on the ps5, if there will be any.

Did they now or maybe that was the plan all along. I would bet you there will be more eyes and a larger than ever viewing of their June showcase. True many will question whether the game is going to other platforms after 6 months, a year or however long but i think most won’t be able to wait that long and will at least consider streaming it on Game pass to get a feel and decide whether to buy it later when or if it comes to their platform of choice. So, while the move may or may not sell Xbox consoles it will definitely sell Game Pass which is the main goal. SOT has had more time in the media spotlight than ever before, normally it would get a trailer for new content at E3 but now it’s being talked about. To me this is a great way to sell Game Pass, keep everyone guessing. I’ll bet you very few will wait for maybe they may not to buy but they won’t wait to play especially now that you don’t need a console to play just stream and you have amazing streaming services like Nvidia that you can get a 4080 4k streaming option. I think the twitter banter is nothing more than that. Game Pass is why Xbox has been securing publishers and studios and I think they will get an influx of that after the June showcase and on wards.

“the gates of hell” = making a bunch of money while a small % of the audience wonders what does/doesn’t get ported?

I think that’s quite an optimistic take.

Games that release after a year of platform exclusivity rarely make as much money as could have been expected had they launched on all formats. Videogame marketing is all about “buy now! Pre-order!” And the reason is that games are at their most appealing in the first couple of weeks and sales tail off quickly. If Microsoft really want to cash in with 3rd party sales, they’ll need to do it by launching everywhere all at once.

As for few people debating / expecting new games coming to PlayStation. Every video game news site will put out click bait articles on the subject. It will definitely be a big subject for discussion on every social media platform where gamers gather. It’ll be on podcasts and YouTube. This is giant news. Imagine if Splatoon launched on Xbox. If there was an article saying “Zelda on Xbox coming next.” And there was a tiny idea in your brain that said this was possible, you’d click it, just like I would.

I don’t really know what to Microsoft is playing at - betting the farm on putting Pentiment on PlayStation.

I think you are underestimating the small % of the audience, when you put social midias and gaming journos at full activity putting out speculative articles instead of actually talking about the game features. I have made this mistake in past considering them echo chambers. Imo, they are hijacking their console business in order to “make a bunch of money” in other platforms.

Betting the farm? Seriously?

It’s where the industry is moving. I simply don’t see it as a negative.
