The Big ol' Xbox 3rd Party Releases Discussion Thread (HiFi, SoT, Pentiment, Grounded) (Part 1)

Bold from you to assume those games wont be ported to PC!! Or can they be played on one? O.o

Its obvious more are coming but I think its a mistake to do late GAAS ports instead of day one releases.

I think there’s quite a few reality checks in store for the gaming industry. Two elements over the past week me relax & just ignore the dooming: Xbox’s own assurances in their podcast (people can press A for “doubt” as much as they want, but I actually believe Microsoft’s intent is sound) & mainly the state of the actual industry itself within the world’s economy.

There’s been a load of misconceptions permeating over years about Xbox & MS subsidizing hardware costs… which are true, but not unique to MS. It’s not like PlayStation is in a great spot. In fact they just recently announced they can’t reduce hardware prices this gen due to the cost of manufacturing. It means PlayStation needs to think about their bottom line & make the hardware affordable to buy & also affordable to manufacture next-gen.

I think by going multiplat, Xbox can liberate itself from quite a few constraints, i.e. namely the need to appeal to a wide audience. If Xbox high end hardware no longer targets the mass market, then they’re no longer constrained by mass market requirements in terms of BOM (bill of materials). They could get creative with a Series Portable & then go big with a Series X2 which will have a more niche & hardcore appeal than rival systems (like the PS6), but it wouldn’t be as constrained by the realities of the market.

Looking at Colt Eastwood’s recent video (which appears like someone gave him a hint or two), that’s my own takeaway regarding their future plans right now.

I think people need to start looking at PlayStation for what it is: the mainstream console brand in the high end market. The “AAA” brand everyone, their mother & their dog wants for Christmas. This has its own caveats for Sony, namely the fact they need to turn a profit on the hardware & hit a sweet spot in terms of affordability.

I expect the next Xbox to be more powerful than the PS6 simply because Sony needs to make money from their hardware, whilst Xbox makes money from its games launching everywhere & its sub service.

Clout chasing > more trust > more reach > more people clicking on the article> more money.

They could always use PC like Nvidia does and Tencent is the one that makes the most money and they are a publisher. I really don’t think there is much being made in being a platform holder for them other than their Game Pass subs is mainly console. The console stores are just not making that much especially when you look at what Sony made from it in a quarter, pretty much peanuts. I think Steam is the only one really growing. The console platform just limits Xbox. If they were on the Steam like idea with one OS to unify everything all this crying won’t be happening, and they would be able to crank out a proper premium console at a high premium price without gimping anything. Those interested will buy and the rest will go PC or cloud each according to what they can afford.

I get that console fans love their consoles. The US video game hardware market is, however, a mature market at this point. It's not dying by any means. But the market is what it is. Have to get beyond the boxes in the US to find growth. pic.twitter.com/Z4bxhTeGoa

One thing I’m wondering since Xbox has already worked on the console releases for these 4 games.

Why the heck aren’t they trying to bring some of their games to mobile? The Switch isn’t the best hardware and anything that can run their should be able to run on Android and Apple phones with some work. I can see Pentiment, both Ori’s and Grounded as likely games to port over.

MS doesnt want give a cut to Google/Apple

The market for paid games on mobile is miniscule as is, let alone for console oriented games.

That 3rd party store is looking like a pipe dream right now, if Apples policies stand and the EU can’t do anything about it Google is likely going to follow and make it just as difficult for growth on Android.

Xbox always gives its fanbase something to panic about because their communication is horrid and they constantly waffle between saying one thing and doing another. We all know more games are coming and seeing them release four games in basically a two month span sure does seem like this is less of a “test,” as they implied, and more of a plan they’re simply putting into effect. I fully expect the cycle to repeat again at the end of the year with rumors of more ports, followed shortly by the formal announcements, except there’s going to be 1-2 big name games next time.

Certain users certainly make you think everything Xbox does is smart and rational and that they should be immune to criticism. Of all the major platform holders, Xbox has the most things you can be critical of.

This being $ spend not units is worse, makes it obvious the base of console users is decreasing, not just flattening.

Well its already more 1st party games then Sony plan to release in the PS5.

Xbox 1st party transends rhe confines of a single platform. This is a good problem to have.

I have a bridge I’m selling. Looking to buy?

They already have a store on Android and Google isn’t as stringent since unlike Apple they don’t own the phones just the software. So, Google can’t go too crazy but with iPhone that is a totally different, Xbox is not going to gain any traction unless they release their games independently or go Apple arcade.

What store is on Android? Do you mean the Xbox or game pass apps where we can’t make any purchases from?
