Maybe streaming can be just that, a way to reach people who aren’t interested in consoles but I assume that most people who aren’t interested are usually mobile gamers who play vastly different games than console games, the AAA games popular on consoles and PC probably doesn’t appeal to them, just my guess, I just disagree that TV streaming will eliminate the need for consoles like you originally said.
Global Smartphone shipments we down last year Samsung saw a decline over 8% yoy.
Mobile gaming is otherwise on the rise.
By what measure is PS5 on track to beat PS4? From what we know, there has been reports that Sony is asking manufacturers to make less due to lower demand, and Circana has said that there is a downturn and that starting with 2024 it will be pretty bad for the console market. So please enlighten us on how you expect PS5 to do great?
That doesn’t alert the fact that the smartphone sector isn’t recording a big sales increase and many expect even Apple to see a big decline with the iPhone 16
And I doubt mobile phone gaming is the way forward for Gamepass AAA blockbuster high budget games
Ok. Its still 3.9B more users than the console market combined.
I would say its the only way forward.
The simple fact that both consoles reached 50 million sales after 3 years on sale and the PS5 shows no sign of slowing down at all with its November sales even beating the PS2 numbers
Aren’t January 2024 sales already down though compared to last year? We also know that last year is when it stopped being supply constrained and several who had been waiting finally got one, which means this year it would go back to normal and actually stop selling that much.
The PS5 is selling great while the XBox isn’t and it was the one system last year with all sorts of supply issues and that’s without the talk of Xbox games coming to PS5. I see Tom is now saying a massive Big XBox game is going to come on PS5. I hope he’s talking utter crap but at the moment who knows. The silence from Xbox is telling …
I keep reading here that consoles are a dying industry PC and mobile is the future and yet Xbox is looking to PS5
Jez corrected his earlier report about it being entire departments. He was wrong. He has corrected his false reports to correctly say the department remains.
The Tom Warren thing was recorded before he put out his article about Indiana Jones, so that could have been the game he was talking about which doesn’t make any sense considering that MS deliberately asked Disney to keep it exclusive and paid for it.
In the end though, we have analysts like Mat Piscatella of Circana telling us the outlook is bleak this year for consoles, so personally I’d rather take the opinion of someone who’s job is to report sales and analyze the market to form an opinion. 2025 could be better for sure, but 2024, at least according to what he says, will be a rough one.
Why is the silence telling by the way? Are there examples of Sony coming out quickly or Nintendo with statements? Usually it’s only “we don’t comment on rumours” . No company has to come out and say stuff when ridiculous rumours are going on online. Their silence means nothing; it’s a big corporation that doesn’t need to comment because small time influencers think they know it all.
They’re not relevant as it isnt in a legally binding system. They are inside an FTC Process that the FTC can (and will) ignore the ruling if they dont like the outcome. At this point any rulings is merely suggestions. Similarly MS wont be impacted unless the process is elevated into US Federal Court.
What’s this about Business Event was supposed to happen last year?
Jez tweeted this event has been planned for over a year.
My guess is
What I dont expect
I was referring to the on-going process with the FTC as a whole, because yes - it’s going to end in federal court and that part does matter - and so the process as a whole does matter. This week in particular has illustrated this fact, as part of Microsoft’s argument against a temporary injunction was that the company would run with limited integration and would be easier to divest should the courts rule against them - so part of Microsoft’s legal arguement is acknowledging the possibility and the procedure of what would happen if they lost. Even if the chance of them losing in court in the end is incredibly small it would not surprise me if Microsoft was limiting their integration of Activision into the wider ecosystem until such a time that the whole matter was settled.
Indiana Jones would be a shame to be honest, finally we have a Disney IP, it could be a big seller too even if IJ isn’t that super popular anymore. Same with Blade. At least give it a chance, see how it does.
Microsoft have supposedly been planning the business event since summer last year, but because of the leaks/potential leaks/rumours they have decided to do it early.
We did sort of know that they had been planning the business event either way and were pushing it early, but finding out they have been planning it since summer last year is interesting. I guess given that was the original expected closing date of the Activision acquisition, and the point where it became a lot clearer it WAS going to close - this business update might relate more largely to Activisions integration into Xbox and what having Activision will mean for Xbox.
I somewhat agree.
I expect to hear
Xbox focusing on digital
Xbox app store (possibly more than just new Samsung TVs and mobile)
Brief talk about ABK
games will continue to be case by case. No official word on a clear cut program such as all ABK/Bethesda games or all live service
We are hard at work on the next interaction of Xbox consoles
Changes to game pass tiers (ad tier, non day one tier etc)
We will continue to deliver great experiences for all of our players. Blah blah
Things I think will happen/be interested by gaming media
Xbox is pointless get a PS instead
Xbox is going third party and that’s a good thing
Sony wins
Sadly I can see some Xbox focused YouTubers disappearing or changing completely.
For me ill keep gaming on Series X but at the start of next gen most likely move to PC.
Since it was being put together since last summer (according to Jez), it feels like this is their ABK themed meeting similiar to how they did a Bethesda/Zenimax one after the acquisition closed. The ABK acquisition had so many planned completion dates and so many extensions, I can see the plan event being pushed out accordingly, and then it was the end of year holidays so didn’t want to have it then and then wanted to distance it from the round of layoffs at the start of the new fiscal quarter,
Now as to the content of this one, who knows what it will cover. Its been an insane couple of weeks as rumors were spread and hyper-focused on.
