By your own logic if they “turned” on Bethesda (makers of Skyrim, FO) they will surely turn on FROM (maker of less popular games).
Because Bethesda was already iffy in public eye after F76, FROM just made ER and are on a massive high. The perception of the two are massively different. There is a difference between a poor release and bad backlash vs a game being not as popular but fantastic.
I don’t think Bethesda at all are bad, ironically loved Starfield but never played ER.
Sales are more important.
If that was true Game Pass wouldn’t be a thing
and this is what makes a lot of things about Xbox so weird to discuss.
If the rumor of HFR coming to Switch/it’s successor is true, then I think it’s a good move, and fits perfectly into the case-by-case model. If it hits big there, that would help a lot in guaranteeing a sequel, getting any sequel a bigger dev and marketing budget, and maybe also attract talent to work at Tango. Xbox has always struggled in Japan, and at this point putting a game that could appeal to a Japanese audience like HFR on Switch could be the best bet to get a toe into that market. It could even spawn an anime adaptation, in the most ideal world.
I think many hardcore gamers are stuck in the past on this all or nothing approach to exclusivity. Sony and Nintendo have perfected that kind of exclusivity, and as Phil has said they’re too entrenched to compete with directly in that space. Xbox stubbornly trying to stick to the models of their console competitors is the quickest way for Xbox as a business to die. Console is only one part of the ecosystem, and if a port of HFR to Switch then builds a fanbase among that ecosystem, that’s more potential customers when a sequel comes out that’s only Xbox+PC with no timeframe or promise for it to also be on a Nintendo system. FOMO is a hell of a drug, and even with Sony first party eventually coming to PC, there’s still PC gamers that buy PS5 to not have to wait or deal with that uncertainty.
I don’t think this is Pandora’s box being opened, we’re not talking about Halo/Forza/Gears going to competitor platforms. This is a well reviewed smaller new franchise that didn’t quite get the audience it deserves because of genre/marketing/being a new franchise on a third place console, that could appeal greatly to an audience that Xbox has struggled to capture, and find a second life there to ensure funding for Tango’s future games.
If sales weren’t important the games wouldn’t be for sale. It’s not weird, it’s just gamers refuse to see nuance and are disconnected from reality.
You just suggested that MS buy FROMSOFT and make GTA6 (the biggest game ever) a year long console exclusive as the only option to get gamers to care about Xbox… As if owning Bethesda, ABK, and their own studios wasn’t enough.
Well if sales were important they wouldn’t put it on a subscription service, just like if console sales were the main goal they wouldn’t put their games on PC. I think you’re misunderstanding me when I said it’s weird, I am saying it’s weird because it’s precisely what you say it is so nuanced and so many moving parts. I understand both sides of the argument for all these topics and both have merits.
I think people would care more about Xbox if they bought FROM because their perception as of right now and same thing with GTA6, people would be forced to get a Xbox and the perception of Xbox would be thrown out the window because how big GTA6 is, also I say GTA6 because it’s out in a year so it would be a quick way to shift perception quickly and this doesn’t come around often.
Well if we can be technical and say it wasn’t enough beacause console sales are down, but that would be naive and a bit premature heh. I don’t know what is going to happen with ABK/Bethesda in the long run when it comes to console sales as there is like we both said so many moving parts, there’s one thing it won’t do and that’s harm sales.
I guess we all have our own opinions on the matter but IMO I think the most simple explanation is the nearest to being the ‘truth’: Xbox is struggling to shift hardware because the market isn’t there.
It’s that simple.
These console hardware manufacturers & software companies are fighting for a piece of the same small cake as ten years ago. It’s just not expanding. The PS5 is doing PS4 numbers… at a time when dev costs are doubling & tripling. The Series X is 399 euros on amazon right now & has been for nearly two months. If it doesn’t sell, it’s because the market for it just doesn’t exist. Video games are a specific hobby. Certain subsections of this hobby appeal to very different types of people, for example live service customers (especially stuff like Fifa) aren’t interested in Starfield or Forza or Halo. It’s a fractured marketplace with an ageing customer base.
In a similar manner 4k blu ray players have been sitting there for years now without any hardware revisions because that market (physical media) simply does not warrant more investment.
Xbox is simply getting hit hardest because it’s the third most popular but Sony & Nintendo aren’t immune to hitting this glass ceiling. Especially Sony with their small profit margins & huge expenses.
I think this is probably not too far off the point but I do think it’s probably a bit to doomy haha, I do feel like there is a bunch of reasons why it’s not selling gangbusters right now but that’s now and I do think they can change it around and it’s not a complete lost cause.
I do fully agree that the console pie doesn’t seem to be growing at all which is concerning for all parties involved but Microsoft is easily set to be completely fine in that scenario and for all we know this doom and gloom around Xbox and concerns could actually happen to Sony first.
If it is on the Switch it’s a complete non-issue. If this is on the PS5 then just call it a day in the Console race XBox. It is easier and less painful in the long run.
I can’t see it being a PS5 game though
If it’s on the Switch then fine it’s a non-issue. XBox has done it before and we also had RARE making GBA games way back in the day even with the XBox buyout.
Given the break up with Moon Studios maybe Ori for the PS5 and that is fine Any other title coming to the PS5 is a massive issue and a massive kick in the teeth for any XBox console fan. Unless it has to be done due to some contractual agreement with a developer XBox has purchased and well that’s fine.
Given MS or XBox hasn’t commented and come out and debunked the rumour, which it would if not true. We can all assume it is true and one game is coming on another system.
I don’t think you have to be afraid of first party games coming to PS5. So far it’s been Switch. And the stuff that was already on PS like Minecraft, TESO and a few others. Unless PS platforms get Game Pass I don’t see them getting games, nor should they. Don’t forget Xbox had development for Redfall stopped as soon as they were acquired and also Indiana Jones exclusivity.
It’s probably just gonna be some smaller games for Nintendo platforms and that’ll be it. I guess it’s possible bigger games come to Nintendo if their hardware allows it, but where does Xbox draw the line? That’s the tricky bit here. They don’t want to send the wrong message, yet HFR allegedly is coming to Switch, but it doesn’t have Game Pass. I do get the possible reasons for it, but if HFR, why couldn’t Pentiment come to Switch too, why not DF’s next game as well? And why not bigger games too? So while I can understand the reasons to shop HFR to a Nintendo platform, it will muddy the waters too. If that’s the right word.
Personally I’m fine with Nintendo.
I’m fine to see Hi-Fi Rush on Switch, because I don’t care about hardware exclusivity now, I’m mainly playing on Deck.
In fact, I would love a “Xbox Deck” dual boot with Xbox OS + Windows lite, which could give me access to Epic, Steam and other store.
In my eyes, console gaming becoming less and less interresting. Hybrid is the way to go, with optimized PC for gaming (maybe Xbox should do one) which could help preservation.
Consoles with their own OS, compatibility issues worsened each generation (which is less and less pertinent everytime, gen 9 games are basically the same as gen 8 games in design and not so stricking visually) are a thing of the past, or soon’ll be.
Jason Ronald : made all Xbox works compatible with PC architecture, ARM or an specific gaming OS on PC, and end the Xbox home console nonsense to switch to a full inclusive portable, PC, console and hybrid OS.
So I couldn’t care less about Hi-Fi Rush, I just want great games coming and have access my full Xbox library everywhere.
No, because what does revenues have to do with console sales? What if their console sales in a Gen or 2 dip below 10 million but they have super high revenues still, and they then decide their console business isn’t worth it, then what?
You are to tell me you’d be happy with a console less MS just for the sake of revenue? I’m not, as I’m not willing to lose thousands of dollars in investment on software that’d be stuck on an old, unsupported plastic box.
Revenue isn’t the only factor in all this, unlike what some of you seem to think. Revenue is only good for the company, not for us.
Except this is super old and doesn’t give us any idea of cross console ownership this gen, and is only based on the US market.
Easy, release a good amount of big, great AAA games for both casual and hardcore public, and release them in a good state since day 1, not after months or years of patches.
It happened in the past, i’ve been around on forums since the first Xbox days, it was a niche console that didn’t have much third party support and almost nobody cared about, it had some great games but also kinda PC oriented.
Then X360 released, and in a couple of years it got masterpieces like Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, and some 1year exclusive ones like Oblivion or Bioshock. Mixed with some great games like Lost Odyssey, PGR, Forza, Blue Dragon, Ace Combat, well, and many more.
That’s how you change the perception of the masses, Xbox Series has nothing like these except for Forza Horizon, and i’m sure many car fans play on Xbox because of this, but it’s not enough.
This is exactly how I feel because as a xbox consumer because it shouldn’t matter to me if Microsoft is making a lot of revenue. If Microsoft continues to lag in console sales then that won’t look good for the xbox console because you’ll see more third party just skipping Xbox. I know efforts on that front have improved, but if they see install base shrinking then there’s less incentives for devs to port their games to xbox.
Anyways, I don’t think it’s the right move to give consumers less incentive to invest in platform when question is always in their head if games will port over to their console. If this rumor is true, then xbox fans should be prepared for every release outside of xbox game studio to have discussion about being on other platforms. So, if you though Blade was annoying, then be prepared for that for every release.
Anyways, if this rumor is true I am going to cut back on digital purchases on xbox because this move will make a consumer that spent over $10000 on platform reconsider building my digital library elsewhere which will result in Microsoft losing a lot of revenue if others feel the same as me.
They really feels like a lot of people. Don’t actually think about the future and everything about this is just really pathetic and stupid. Microsoft is a company is forward thinking and they’re thinking about a decades from now. There are certain things that are in the works that are probably going to change or may not happen. They’re going to be certain people that are going to look into this business and might make changes. Apple’s wall garden is coming down soon. Lawmakers are looking into it. There’s a chance that this will happen by gaming industry itself as well
Hifi Rush has a lot potentail to become a very recognisable IP My guess is they do it to broaden the reach of the IP. and such games do sell well on switch. then part 2 will be exclusive again to xbox and people are more likly to get an xbox. To be honest it seems xbox series consoles despite “objectivly” better game output then last gen is still left behind on the third place. I might sell less then the xbox one. IP reach is important and the switch is still only a secondary console and such a move could be a gateaway for HiFiRush as an IP.
Xbox recognizes the potential of the IP. But they dont have enough reach and switch is a option to broaden the reach. However bringing it on PS5 for example would be not wise.
This never happens, not for Sonys delayed PC ports and it will not happen for Xbox titles on Switch. People will just wait it out or play something else ![]()
