The Big ol' Xbox 3rd Party Releases Discussion Thread (HiFi, SoT, Pentiment, Grounded) (Part 1)

I dunno… I feel like everyone is still looking at this with the old mindset of how Sony and Nintendo have operated the console industry. Create and buy exclusives, lock people into your ecosystem, make money on the back-end with licensing fees, accessories, online subscription, etc… The problem is though this isn’t going to work for much longer. Games are becoming too expensive to make. Sure the exclusive game thing worked when you could hammer out games quickly, but big games may take more than an entire console generation to make now.

What is Sony going to do when they need to start releasing their games on PC because they need to make money and can’t just pump out games? They can only sell “remasters” for so long. What is going to happen with the PS6 when follow up to major games won’t be done till the PS7? Is the PS6 going to be backwards compatible with the PS5? PS4? Are your digital purchases coming with you?

MS is just going to give you an “Xbox Account” you’ll buy games or subscribe to GP and play them on your PC, Xbox, Mobile. Do people with a ton of games on Steam worry about those same games being available elsewhere? Does it stop you from buying a Steam Deck? Are third parties skipping Steam?

Yeah, because gaming execs never lie. I just observed the curious coincidences about BG3 timings and messagging, Sony cleverly set it up as a Starfield counter and outmanouvered Xbox like they often do.

Doesn’t take an expert to know that this can be the final blow to Xbox hardware if it happens, they’re already doing much worse than PS5 as it is.

So… are we saying Phil is lying about BG3, the head of Larian, or both?

Just seems like a weird hill to die on imo.

Steam doesn’t sell a box to mainstream (Deck numbers are ridicule compared to consoles), it’s a store on PC (95% Windows), which has like 1,5B pieces of hw out there. Bad comparison.

Yes, you don’t have to be an expert to render an opinion. That was the point.

I never particularly trusted any exec, it’s not like I’m prohibited to think it, no? I just found strange all those coincidences.

With Microsoft Money Men in charge they will likely start fucking with studios/pubs to keep their line going up after they get whatever GP boost from adding publisher backlogs.

They just did that to recoup a bit from ABK they’ll do it even more as they swallow more billion dollar publishers.

People who though to sell Xbox Series like they actually tried to do are not particularly expert themselves I’d say. Now, after years saying hw sales don’t matter, the buzzword ehind the scenes is that numbers are too low and multiplatform is the way. The missing point is where they lied to us along the line.

But he thinks that this will be a good thing… for whom? not people deeply invested in the Xbox ecosystem that’s for sure.

I am just trying to figure out what they’re thinking. It can’t be just be a multi-platform publisher. That doesn’t play into their cloud, AI or subscription tendencies.

The only thing I can think of is something along the lines of:

Continue buying up some of the biggest IP in the market and make them Xbox IP.

Release those Xbox games everywhere with ties into the Xbox ecosystem.

Bake in cross play and cloud saves, so games are readily portable across devices.

Promote Game Pass for Play Anywhere benefits so people can play that game from their console, TV app, phone, laptop, etc.

In other words, the reason the buy from a Xbox Store or subscribe to Game Pass is the number of games and the mobility across all of your devices.

IDK, I’m reaching lol

What on Earth does that have to do with what I said? I never implied anything.

I don’t care, it has nothing to do with anything. He’s not an expert and neither are you, yet you’re both offering your perspectives. That’s it. I didn’t think it would be that complicated of a concept to understand.

Seriously, some of you seem a bit deranged by all of this.

They not consistent with features even with their games on their platforms, for example Play Anywhere is hit&miss, their tv&mobile app for streaming are…crap, so no, I don’t think their master plan is so sofisticate, they are just trying to boost numbers and who cares about Xbox fans.

Maybe it’s premature to say Sony or Nintendo has no future while Microsoft does( because of cloud/AI or money). The other two knows how to cultivate their fanbase and actually give them what they want, and in return, they get brand loyalty. There might be a future that Sony and Nintendo will survive longer than MS( in the gaming space), and the reason might be is because they know how to run an entertainment company.

That is a possibility, I’m just trying to find the silver lining. If it turns out there isn’t some grand strategy behind it to drive subscription revenue and Xbox ecosystem to new heights, instead it’s just a brute force way to the top of the industry in revenue, then I’ll be disappointed.

Yeah, at least when they screwed up, they never tried to sabotage their own brand, MS already tried once and is positioning to deal the final blow.

I mean, looking at least 6-7 years, do you really believe they have some secret master plan?

depite all the doom and rightfully so i can see a point down the road when sony and nintendo do the same but way ways down the road. all ofthis anger is justified. its gonna be interesting to see what happens. sucks my brand of choice is basically not gonna matter in the hardware space anymore but ill still be getting the games they make just now like with sony first party ill wait for them to go 20 bucks or less on ps5. it will be ok guys. this conversation has been good today.

Good night everyone, hopefully we get some news tomorrow, whatever happens.

Literally has everything to do with the center of this topic that’s being discussed here but you don’t care so I don’t even know why you keep replying to me lol.

Every platform holder and publisher does this. ABK most likely would have completed the layoffs themselves if they weren’t acquired… MS is going to be a megacorp whether they release their games on other platforms or not… just like the other platform holders and major publishers. Some of you are really losing it.
