The Big ol' Xbox 3rd Party Releases Discussion Thread (HiFi, SoT, Pentiment, Grounded) (Part 1)

I know it’s not for everyone, but id suggest considering a transition to PC. It gets all the third party games, all the Xbox games, and (presumably) all of the Playstation games. Let’s you get back to thinking more about gaming and less about business.

Just IMO, but I feel like it’s basically the ultimate platform now that basically everything makes it there.

That isn’t even a consideration for me at this point, I like the simplicity of consoles and I doubt I’ll consider a PC any time soon.

That is why he said “this is not for everyone”.

Still, the pc market is booming, especially in countries where consoles are not common, and the console market is bounded for 20 years.

I agree that pc is the best place, but it has its problems too, price and commodity. Good that there are options.

Nobody knows what will be the market in a generation. Everybody laughed when Xbox proposed some digital-driven system at Xbox one launch. It was seen as a big DRM. Now, people buy digital goods in a very big majority (which in fact it its the worst DRM you can get, go figure thinking at the Xbox launch again) and console without disks are sold without problems. It is quite clear that ps6 will have a drive as an option and ps7 maybe totally cloud-driven as far as we know.

This is simplifying the issues of the original idea of the Xbox One, always online, couldn’t sell your discs at any store or someone else, no game sharing, forced Kinect, 499$ (which happened and was a big mistake). Sony was smarter to not want to jump to the future too fast while Xbox did so very arrogantly. Xbox essentially handed the generation over on a silver platter to Sony and that’s why we are here over 10 years later, Xbox’s market share totally lost after they had taken a big chunk of PS buyers with the 360.

A lot of people in my age range (late 20s) that play videos games that I know tell me they grew up with the 360, they all abandoned ship and went back or just ditched Xbox with the PS4, are now on PS5, all the issues Xbox consoles face today can be traced back to that original Xbox One reveal and obviously the lack of trying to actually get high profile AAA exclusives all throughout the 8th generation after the first few years probably also played a role.

I did not say that this was the only problem of the X1. And I also agree that MS is usually too soon too fast whereas Sony end up in the same place at the right moment.

You can not deny that as soon as we are in a digital world on console, DRM is de facto on for all games.

Oh man if this is true… :grimacing: If true this will be a disaster, they should be aiming to release the next Xbox before the PS6, not after, will be lucky to hit Dreamcast numbers if they actually come in after the PS6.

The leaker goes on to confirm that “in the last couple of weeks”, Microsoft “stopped ghosting AMD” and only now is Microsoft “starting design with AMD”. That means Microsoft is “way behind Sony” and while they thinks Microsoft could certainly catch up with Sony, its next-gen system “may be a little later than people expect, and it might be a bit rushed”

Sounds like a bunch of nonsense. They could have signed a deal after Sony but all the negative stuff added about being later than expected or rushed is made up.

Its from a horribly bad source, MLID.

Moore’s Law Is Dead needs to become a banned source here. He’s a fraud and I’m still waiting on the RDNA 3 in the PS5 that he promised

I started laughing manically when I got to “That’s according to podcaster Moore’s Law is Dead”

I then promptly closed the tab.

I disagree with you, in wanting the next Xbox before the next PlayStation. In a way it is crazy you brought up Dreamcast, because it coming out before PS2 was what killed the Dreamcast.

In truth, you want the next Xbox to come out at the same time as the next PlayStation or 6 months after with a little more power.

Probably and I can understand that fear. I think people need to understand where that fear is coming from. I believe that fear is a result of how Microsoft have been treating Xbox hardware for years as well as the knowledge of the fact that Microsoft have a certain history abandoning projects/services/divisions relatively fast, if they can’t find the success they aim for.

It’s also important that perception of the Xbox brand as a whole varies depending on where you come from, so if you’re from the US/UK or any country in which Xbox is doing well, you might think people are crazy if they tell you that they fear that MS could potentially abandon console hardware, which is very expensive to make, if Xbox market share declines any further.

Here in Germany, Xbox is basically non-existent. Retail space is almost gone, there aren’t any ads (and there haven’t been any marketing campaigns in a while), whereas PlayStation has basically everything on lock. The biggest game partnerships, huge marketing campaigns etc. That hasn’t always been the case, the 360 was very well liked and often the choice for players and gaming media, even though the PS3 sold more. There was a presence in media, TV etc. - that’s not the case anymore. The only Starfield ad I can remember was the one for Samsung TVs, that made sure that people knew that they wouldn’t have to buy the console to play the game.

Coming from PlayStation 1 and 2 I completely ignored the original Xbox but since Xbox 360 the ecosystem has been my primary platform. Now, with a digital library of more than 1300 games and thousands of dlcs I made the decision to stop buying any Xbox games in the future, simply because I don’t believe in the future of Xbox console hardware. The Xbox messaging has been a complete disaster in terms of building trust in the ecosystem and brand. I need to know their strategy to decide if I want to invest any more money and time into that ecosystem.

Microsoft, at least here in mainland Europe, aren’t trying to sell the console. How bad is it going to be if Xbox releases their games on competing platforms? It’s not about the people locked into other ecosystem that aren’t switching, it’s about getting new customers into your ecosystem. You simply can’t do that if you don’t have marketing or brand identity or if your platform is seen as a lesser version of another platform.

I get that it’s hard to grasp, especially if you live in the US but these concerns are valid for some and not everyone is concern trolling. Context matters.

Isn’t the target 2028?

Console mean jack shit anymore unless your operating income for software and hardware is hugely skewed towards your main profits. Nintendo are the only company thst this applies to.

Look at all the shit sony are trying to pull with gaas.

I understand the article I posted may have a bad source but I only posted it because of Eurogamer and I think they’re a serious outlet that wouldn’t talk about it if they didn’t have a good reason.

100% everything you said here, but even here in the US the Xbox clearly doesn’t have the same mainstream power it once had, almost every casual I talk to has or wants a PS5, even last gen Xbox was still a powerful brand here since it was coming from the dominant 360 and anecdotally in my experience but it was always talked about by random people as much as the PS4, the Xbox market share here seems to still be good but the brand clearly isn’t as popular anymore and Microsoft should get all the blame for that, I used far more advertising for the Xbox One in the first three years of it’s lifetime than I have ever seen for Series S/X. Xbox Series should be way ahead of the Xbox One but it isn’t. I think Xbox One finished the generation at around 55 mil, Xbox Series will be lucky to reach 45 mil at this rate, their hardware estimates for the next quarter are catastrophic.

I don’t think this has been posted here yet, a Zenimax employee talks about this whole strategy change at the 1:15 mark. It looks like the strategy change is based on “data” and “metrics” again.

Incorrect.

It’s not like businesses make decisions based on feeling alone. They use data to predict outcomes.
