Starfield |OT| You're Finally Awake... In Space!

I’m fine with actual legitimate criticism. I am just sick of all the bad faith acting and disingenuous bullshit around Starfield discourse. I saw an excerpt from a Youtube video where the guy “reviewing” says something to the effect of “while Mass Effect and Destiny have aliens and cool space powers , Starfield doesn’t”. So not only did he not play it, but he didn’t even watch the Direct where they literally show the player using space magic in the game. These people have thousands of followers…ugh

Yeah I do a lot of stealth in the game its just not very good compared to say Cyberpunk. Its hard to predict when you will or won’t be detected primarily because the game itself doesn’t really know…but its a huge RPG - it should be seen in that context. If this was a stealth game it would be disastrous. But its not…

I just don’t think the stealth system in the game is very good. Its one of the weaker points.

I think I know who you are talking about.

and as we all know, cool space powers = good game

Tbh I thought his review was well written and made mostly valid points, but this just feels like grasping to justify the 7.

Also… not every game needs aliens. There are so many amazing sci-fi stories that are human-centric (perhaps with an abstract alien presence in the background) and that’s clearly what BGS were going for (I haven’t finished the story so I don’t know if actual aliens show up).

Starfield is now Number 2 most played, defeating Warzone. It’s not easy to defeat Fortnite when it’s on the Cloud for mobile folks too. That said it’s very impressive.

Third person for planetary surface things, exploration, cities etc. First person for cramped spaces and combat. Both are well done and feels great to me.

It’s a one use item, it gets spent when you use it. Lockpicking is great in this game, don’t ruin it just figure out how it works. I almost never use more than one digipick per lock.

Every time you visit a merchant, check if they have digipicks and always buy them all. Since you only need one per lock, unless you make a mistake, you will end up with a lot of digipicks in no time.

The pre-review comments here are very interesting on reflection

I always play stealthily in Bethesda games, and while I so far don’t completely hate it, I would agree that stealth in Starfield is definitely weird and hard to figure out. I still haven’t unlocked the later Concealment skill, so I have no idea how much that helps.

From what I can figure out, light and distance seem to play important roles in NPC visibility, but I think your companion also acts like a giant beacon signaling to enemies “over here guys!”. How fast you move also plays a huge role as moving faster makes more noise. This has always been a thing in Bethesda games and I think people often overlook how important it is (which is why unlocking skills that allow you to run without making noise is so important). Basically, you have to move at a snails pace till you no longer hear your own footsteps.

Ultimately, I think the stealth could be a bit better, but I’m kind of glad it’s not completely OP like it is for Skyrim where you could literally be moving right in front of someone and they wouldn’t see you.

Also, the whole vent system feels like an afterthought and I never use them.

Yeah I would think stealth is a lonewolf thing, companions are not great lol. Chameleon is good for sitting still too.

The vents feels more like maintenance tunnels tbh, makes more sense.

Also the weight of your armor/space suit. Best way to sneak is to take off your space suit.

Concealment lvl 2 helps with movement speed (allowed you to “run” while sneaking) and lvl 3 gives you chameleon when standing still.

And don’t move around with your flash light active or a weapon with laser sight.

Edit: this I just a guess, but I think your height also affects stealth.

Much like ammo, I have an abundance of digipicks

If you do any solid amount of exploring you’ll never have to buy ammo or picks

Yep.

For ammo, the scavenging skill is nice too. Get lots more credits, ammo and medpacks now.

The game explicitly warns you more than once not to take companions on stealth missions during the Ryujin faction questline.

Also, stealth works way better if you take off your spacesuit (something I did not realize until recently…).

I haven’t started that quest line, but I just figured that makes sense haha.

I have had no issues with stealth. It is harder than games like Cyberpunk which is more “gamey”

So, I’m taking the tour in Titan and I noticed that 2 of the large wind turbines were buggy looking, I thought that was just a bug until I took a closer look and noticed iced had build up on the bottom of them. After using the cutter to remove the ice they started working again.

I’m brute forcing my way through the Ryujin questline right now without a single point in stealth or lockpicking. Boss: “You shot people and got arrested, bad job” Me: “Deal with it”

I’ve only done the first quest, I have a pack that dropped that makes me invisible when I crouch and stay still, told Sarah to wait went up to the PC I need to use, crouch and do the objective. No stealth points, 100% stealthy.
