Starfield |OT| You're Finally Awake... In Space!

And it’s only just starting! Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, and Oblivion Remake around the corner!

Did I miss something ? Skyblivion or the Virtuous UE5 graphics rumour?

I just find it hilarious that one of the most popular RPG franchises stepped away from it (Final Fantasy) . Meanwhile, other devs are flourishing in the genre. Just insane to think about it that in a 12 month span we got to play top tier RPGs with games such as Chained Echoes, Octopath 2, BG3, Starfield, Sea of Stars, Wo Long, Diablo IV, Sea of Stars, Mario RPG remake, and a few others. What makes that list interesting is each of those games provide something different to the genre, and it shows that the genre is still alive and flourishing.

For me it’s come to a point where I will stay away from any new info. The Direct was already more than enough. And Todd revealed plenty during Xcast too, I was weak and watched it, kinda wish I hadn’t.

Some stuff needs to stay mysterious, unknown until you play it.

The latter.

Don’t read the Q&A summary then. Some things in there I wish I had stayed away from. I’m also weak though haha.

Amazing that there are so many companion options! It was ambiguous but I was a little concerned that the Constellation staff were the only companions.

Oh damn! I can’t believe they namechecked the History of Rome podcast! I’m obsessed with it, currently on a re-listen.

Yeah, I got ya.

When it comes to that I prefer a brief marketing period like Fallout 4. Man that was perfect. But after such a long wait it’s just so hard to stay away from stuff. Imagine if our willpower was so strong that we had just not even watched the gameplay reveals, damn.

Ah well, I’m sure there’s plenty they didn’t reveal at all.

The info about the new religions is really interesting

Also nice to see them talking about environmental storytelling, Bethesda worlds are in a league of their own

There are over 20 named characters who can join your crew. All of these have their own backgrounds, strengths, weaknesses and story.

20+ named companions is really great to hear. I didn’t care about any of the companions (followers) in Skyrim, but talking to companions is the best part of a lot of rpgs.

I’m about 80 hours in to the game. I just finished Act II. The game is very good - and it is/will be loved by a certain type of gamer who is really into tactical games, micro managing, and/or D&D. However, I would never claim that it is for everyone. I’m sure there are many, many players who would be miserable trying to play this game.

Just to give you some idea of the level of micromanaging - I have probably spent at least ten hours so far messing with inventory. Trying to get optimal gear setups on every member of your party is no joke when you have 8 or nine party members and can only manage four of them at a time. There is no way to access inventory (or even send items to a character’s inventory) unless they are in your main party of four. So there is a lot of moving members in and out of the party to accomplish even the smallest task. In addition, you can only change party members at camp - and this involves physically running to tell one party member to drop out for a while then physically running to another to ask them to join. Why can’t I just add/drop members with a button press??? I guess this is “immersive” but it really drives me nuts.

I will say if you have ever played D&D or have any interest in D&D then this game is a dream come true (despite the frustrating elements). I had a very brief love affair with D&D literally 40 years - playing AD&D 1st edition while in high school. I have never played the table top game since then, but have great nostalgia for it. BG3 lets you go crazy building almost any D&D character you can imagine (using 5e rules).

There is almost no penalty for respeccing, so you can do it as much as you want to experiment with builds. I spent about 5 hours over the last two days just respeccing every member of my party to try out new builds. All of the characters come “default” as single class, but you can change them to completely different classes, put them in two class builds, three class builds, etc. The sky really is the limit.

I’m sure the comparisons between BG3 and Starfield will continue, much to the annoyance of many of us. IMO the two games have almost nothing in common except being in the broad category of rpg. I do think BG3 is a high water mark for its particular type of rpg, but that doesn’t mean Starfield can’t/won’t be a high water mark for the Bethesda-style rpg as well.

FO4 had some interesting companions like Robert MacCready who was a child and part of Little Lamplight in FO3 or Paladin Danse who fights for the Brotherhood of Steel, but later realise that he’s a Synth.

And for Starfield I’m expecting the Adoring Fan pulling a Cicero who was a character in Skyrim and, according to his diary, a Adoring Fan himself and killed his hero.

I think Serana in Skyrim is the closest Bethesda has come to a BioWare or Obsidian level companion character. But they’re generally been putting more and more effort with each game into making the companions distinct and interesting, so I have a good feeling about Starfield.
