I don’t collect games either nor do I care about ownership but for a massive game like Starfield, for me personally, I would never finish it in a month via Game Pass and unlike the majority here, my gaming habits isn’t centered around Game Pass. Unless it’s a day one release that I want to play, I don’t subscribe to Game Pass. In the case of Starfield, I would most likely end up paying more money to keep “renting” the game via Game Pass which is why I decided to just outright purchase the premium edition for $100. The money I have saved via Game Pass ($260/Halo Infinite campaign, Gears Tactics, Gears 5: Hivebusters, Redfall, Hi Fi Rush and A Plague Tale Requiem), paying $100 to buy and own Starfield so I can simply play it at my leisure as opposed to needing to finish the game within a month or two was the easier decision.
As for others in general, I simply believe that in this case, the vast majority will end up buying Starfield instead of playing it through Game Pass because it’s a potential generation defining game and for those who are hardcore Bethesda Game Studio fans that aren’t on PC, would much rather buy and own the game.
The only reason i’d want to buy Starfield is a Physical version like CE or something
Theres 0 chance of me buying a 1st party MS title digitally when it will be on GP. 3rd party I might buy but the ones I really love. For example P5R but physical.
Also buying the premium upgrade is still buying it
This. Also, while Game Pass is great for those who missed out on a lot of games, I for one have already played and completed from the past and any games that I didn’t will most likely never be played and completed because the time is simply past.
When you have hundreds of games at your disposal but limited time, it does become overwhelming and for most people, they just don’t have time for that shit and would rather buy a few games a year and/or stay with a few free to play games and that’s it.
The Bethesda fans are 100% buying Starfield, granted mostly on PC via Steam but still, they would much rather buy Starfield than use PC Game Pass via the Windows Store. Console wise, Bethesda fans will do the same.
According to Phil Spencer himself, a lot of people who play games on Game Pass also buy those same games on Xbox because they simply prefer to have them in their digital library while still being subscribed to Game Pass.
Simply, not everyone is or wants to be subscribed to Game Pass. Think about this - Microsoft is dropping “Gold” and calling it Game Pass “Core” for three reasons - first is to increase the Game Pass subscriber count because my guess is that “Gold” probably has 20m or so subscribers who probably just play a few online games a year and have no need for Game Pass. Second, why pay for these horrible games with gold every month which have been trash for years when their focus is 100% on Game Pass? Third, this move is to entice those paying $10 for Core to move to Ultimate to $17 but if they didn’t already do it, I seriously doubt that the vast majority will all of a sudden do it now. Or in September when the changes go into affect.
For me personally, it’s simply a better decision to outright buy Starfield than play it via Game Pass. I’m someone who has bought games multiple times for multiple platforms. For example, a few games like Division 2 or Ghost Recon Wildlands among several others, I own for PS4/PS5 but since I switched to Xbox as my primary gaming console this generation, I wanted to own and play them on Xbox.
For the most part, I’m in control of my hype, generally don’t like to overhype myself for anything. But man when I listen to the music theme I just want to get my hands on that thing immediately, it’s so insanely captivating
Same here. I am not incredibly hyped at all yet, just waiting for it to release. And I have no doubts I’m gonna love it.
Been watching The Expanse quite a lot this week and almost done with season 1 and this really gets me in the vibe for Starfield. It makes me realize the potential of the super cool environmental storytelling BGS might have come up with.
Or like, flying around in space and you see a planet with something mysterious and you go there and find out if there is indeed something. The not knowing can be so awesome.
I see people saying this game is CPU bound and that might be true, but I suspect this global illumination lighting model is a big or even the main reason why the game is demanding and is 30 on console. Other games with dynamic lighting and have a 60 mode you can clearly see the difference in lighting with 60, but depending on the person it might not be a big deal because there’s still otherwise good looking assets and art with baked lighting, but in Strafield I suspect there just isn’t even any baked lighting and the whole game is fully dependent on being illuminated by that GI system
I bought the digital deluxe upgrade and the physical collectors edition to get that watch lol, but I already have an Apple Watch Ultra and I wonder if I should either cancel my pre order or keep it for re-selling at more than double the price a few years down the road.
But I’m like you, I don’t see any reason to buy 1st party games. Even 3rd party I barely have time for now. I used to spend easily 150$ a month on games . Now I spend a little more than that a year for Game Pass Ultimate (less until now thanks to gold trick) and use the extra money for renovations on my house or trips. MS is happy with my money, and I’m happy having more money in my pockets, it’s a win/win situation!
I bought the constellation edition as well but honestly I want the case more than the watch. I see there are some watches sold for 200 or 150 on ebay so am tempted to do that.
This may just be a me thing but my only real concern for Starfield is the story and plot. The rest of the game will be amazing but for me games of this size if the plot and story and world building isn’t good, I end up having a hard time doing a lot in the world. The learning more part is often what drives me.
It’s what drove me in Obsidian, Fallout 3 and most of Skyrim but Fallout 4 took a big step back for me.
That said I have faith that good Bethesda is back.
I think you might change after Gamescom Staffy. I think that is when the hype machine will really start for the game. I just can’t wait to pick a moon and fly to it, I doubt I’ll ever finish the game and just enjoy flying around the galaxy
That is very likely. It probably has to do with the fact that I’m neck deep into§RDR2 and that overall it’s still a little bit on the quiet side. But not being super hyped and then impressed as hell when playing it would be pretty good too.
And like you said, just flying to a planet and then see what happens, the “simple” things. It sounds like you don’t intend to get on the main story anytime soon.
I don’t think the main stories in Bethesda games has ever been particularly interesting
Tbh Starfield’s seems like it most be the most intriguing of the lot, certainly more than something like Skyrim which was your basic, “dragons are back, end of the world” etc
But whether it’s good or not, for me the strength of Bethesda is the worlds they build and just getting completely lost in them, coming across random people and their crazy side quests
Is it a first contact story? will we meet intelligent life at the end of the game or at any point in the game?
I want an universe that I find interesting and engaging. Interesting places interesting people and a lot of deep shit like in 2001, interstellar and Solaris (1972)
