It is absolutely understandable, and acceptable, to be disappointed by today’s news, but let’s keep reality in check and avoid the disingenuous, toxic hyperbole that permeates so much of the online discourse.
Implying that Xbox exclusively has problems holding to release dates or releasing content over the past couple years absolutely falls into the latter, as does ignoring the impacts that COVID still has had on development for Xbox and every other developer/publisher on the planet (see my prior Embracer statement). Doom-and-glooming about Game Pass’s trajectory/success because Starfield is delayed also falls in there too; the service is constantly getting new content and if Halo Infinite’s delay didn’t cause a drop, this won’t either.
Using this as means to cherry-pick examples of Sony/Nintendo release success for console-warring is also a no-go.
All some of us are asking for is some objectivity and empathy. Development is extremely difficult over the last two years, and no one is more disappointed by this kind of news than BGS and Arkane but I know for a fact that releasing a game when it’s ready is a far better outcome than releasing similar to Cyberpunk - and some of you can try to deny it, but I know those of you in that camp would be even more outraged if you felt a similar repeat with Starfield. Furthermore, this community has been very vocal with flagging and messages to moderators that this isn’t the type of experience they expect from this community during times like these, and I absolutely agree. Have some nuance, grace, and empathy. If you can’t, well as Jon has always said, this isn’t a democracy.
One way to get staff and keep em in your studio is studio culture, making devs crunch to release games instead of delaying them is one sure way to make them want to leave.
No I know better of you Mort, but multiple flags in this very long thread did state that. I’m just as disappointed as you, these are two of my most anticipated games… ever?
I will say…I think it’s 100% fair to criticize and be upset (rationally) for them giving a date that now according to Jason S. was doubted heavily from the start, double down on it, and constantly hype and hype and hype it…even using employees to do so.
They gotta stop doing this stuff.
Do Sony and Nintendo delay things? Sure…the difference is, you don’t hear hardly anything about the game until it’s almost released or delayed.
Reminder, Cyberpunk was not technically pushed back, it was fowarded by one year or 1.5 years and employees begged to not do that, they weren’t even aware the game had release dates, delayers and going gold.
Which makes me wonder what else MS could do in this situation. Like it’s a sucky situation for everyone involved, MS, BGS, Gamepass subscribers, etc.
But also… It kinda just is what it is?
Aye, I’ll agree that giving the date so far in advance ended up being a mistake in hindsight.
That being said, I do think both MS and BGS really thought they could make it. It didn’t feel like a ridiculously obvious fake date, like say Ragnarok’s ‘2021’.
Firstly, I was talking directly about how it’s better to delay than end up with a broken release like Cyberpunk; I made no mention of delays, or otherwise, for that title.
That said, yes it technically was delayed, here’s a brief history:
It’s not that people have no right to be disappointed. They do. It’s just be limited to that area and not go deep end to say Xbox is dead. I hope no one thinks it’s like DRM announcement. That news, Xbox legit thought it was good news for everyone. I only mentioned that because it’s month before the big day, even though that one was announced days before. All I’m saying is it sucks now, but don’t feel overly depressed about it.
