I’m not saying that it’s easy but is remaking a game EASIER than creating a game from scratch? Absolutely because you already have the general idea, concept, mechanics, etc. all in place already. Just have to make them fit for the current year and tech.
I never said it’s a 1 to 1 conversion but when you already have the story, characters, idea, concept, mechanics already existing, it’s far easier to do a remake compared to a new IP or even a new game in an existing franchise because those games, you have to concept and build everything but in a remake, it’s nowhere close.
REmake4 for example was third person in 2004. It’s still third person. It didn’t change. Does it look better and play better? Yeah but the basics are already there to be built upon.
So again, while im not saying it’s easy, IT IS easier to develop a remake of an already existing game than it is a new IP or a new game in an already existing franchise.
Not necessarily, there are just different challenges. Instead of having the freedom to work on something new they need to appease both fans of the old games and attract new fans.
Also, all you really have is a story and characters. Mechanics, gameplay, all of that would need to be redesigned.
True but at the same time, in this instance, it’s Star Wars. As long as the game is at least good, it will sell millions, make plenty of money and majority will still enjoy the game more than those who won’t.
I certainly tried to quell the “Xbox failed by not getting this locked down” crowd by reminding them of how long I’ve personally suffered through Aspyr’s Mac ports growing up… from the day it was announced. Frankly anyone who was excited about this without an ounce of gameplay footage was asking for disappointment.
Oh there were people here having a tantrum and claiming Xbox fucked up again, despite my repeated reminder of the verifiable pattern of weak ports and worse original titles from the team,… the guy with 20+ years experience dealing with Aspyr was labeled a “fanboy” by plenty.
Turns out, I was right yet again and Xbox clearly had good reason to pass on the title - some of you all pretend that anything attached to Sony is bulletproof when there are plenty of flubs, financial failures, and exclusives that fail to sell despite the propaganda apparatus going in full steam.
The media was no better, all their “Sony won E3” garbage just proves time and time again that the media couldn’t give a shit about Sony actually living up to any of their E3 promises, they just care about the spectacle and how they can use it push their favorite publisher. If that weren’t the case, we sure would be seeing some of those “Where is Factions… it’s been MIA for more than 3 years” articles like we did for Perfect Dark et al. But yeah I guess Naughty Dog have a track record.
They don’t even have a legit RPG studio, and no Guirella doesn’t count as much people try to claim horizon is an RPG. So Sony doesnt even have the expertise to help lol.
As this was more a money hat of xx dollars in exchange for some type of exclusivity (full or timed we don’t know)
And most likely some marketing deal for the title.
Which embracer jumped at as hey money upfront is always awesome.
Most likely with the deal the caveats were it has to be up to a specific standard and Sony can view progress during production to ensure it hits there b but again this wouldn’t be up to Sony to decide to just pull the plug that lies with embracer.
Issue right now is embracer is bleeding money and are cancelling a ton of projects and shutting done a bunch of studios to bring costs down. So instead of sinking what most likely would need to be 100+ million min to get to Sony standards just put it on ice.
I feel bad for the developers being handed this and it not really being in their wheel house as aspyr is mostly now know for porting older titles to new consoles
I find it pretty astonishing as a whole that a remake of Knights of the Old Republic, almost universally regarded as the best video game based off of one of the most well known and beloved IPs in entertainment history, couldn’t get anyone better attached initially than Aspyr.
The original company in Bioware is RIGHT there and EA even had the exclusive Star Wars license for a while. It doesn’t even have to be Bioware! Respawn did a good job with their Star Wars games. The Ubi Soft one looks promising. (Never thought I’d say that.) There’s tons of good options and they went with the Mac port people.
I think this is the challenge with insiders, they can only really know what their insider sources tell them and that doesn’t necessarily paint the full picture. I imagine Grubb had some real information that made him think the project was dead, but was missing some details.
I believe he said his source was from Sony. So it’s conceivable that Sony walked away, but that Saber is choosing to continue with the project on their own terms.
It wouldn’t surprise me Embracer got to Saber first and informed them to not to say anything that it’s canceled rather it’s still on. As much as on as working a frame of a South Park scene. If you know, you know.
Grubb did clarify that it was more Sony pulled their funding and wanted nothing more of the project. And that for what they wanted and embraced wants they need a larger outside partner to assist.
So my guess is that saber has a smaller team trying to build a prototype/ vertical slice to show off to try and get that funding
