I can tolerate old game design just fine, but KOTOR’s gameplay absolutely needs an overhaul for the younger masses. Putting a new coat of paint on it and adding a few QoL features won’t be enough.
I just found out the 2B deal that Embracer had that fell through was with the Saudi gov. I remember during the MS ABK deal people were telling me it was MS that dropped out of the 2B deal with Embracer to buy ABK. I guess people love to blame MS for everything.
I know that today everything is expensive, but Embracer wanted 2B$ just to keep rolling …
In a world where BG3 is GOTY, I really don’t think it needs that much. Both are just DND!
Perhaps, but BG3 also isn’t this weird hybrid between turn-based and real-time. I think any remake should pick one of these lanes and stick with it.
I love Larian, but I don’t know if their wacky and cheeky dialogue( don’t get me wrong it’s top notch in a fantasy setting) is a perfect fit for KOTOR’s more serious tone especially about Revans struggles between the light side and the dark side. Obsidian would have been a great fit because they worked on KOTOR 2, plus they are a better in overall writing( BG3 is close though) especially in a space opera like Star Wars, but they are working on their own games.
Remaking classic RPGs is probably a really complicated job, I don’t blame a merely decent studio of not figuring it out. Hope no one loses jobs because of this.
The sad part is, Sony has an escape goat already, so no one will blame them for this. I’m still gonna…
Some people think they have team rocket levels of incompetence or something lol
I think we need to understand that Sony and MS are not the same when it comes to these projects and marketing them. Sony can announce these projects, get the marketing win, and they can fail and no one will blame Sony (not that they should exactly). The games just need to create a buzz at the beginning so the “console warriors” and media have something to hype up, it doesn’t actually need to come out or be good. On the other hand when MS does these projects they need to be properly managed so they not only come out, but be so overwhelming good that fault cannot be found with the game.
Yea remember the “E3 of Dreams” was just pretty much that a bunch of dreams that never lived up to the hype.
It is funny how Sony can get these conference PR wins and media praise and then never face backlash when things implode for them later on.
It’s like Sony never even has to follow through with things, just announce stuff use fake CGI for the games and reap the media PR wins even if it all turns out fake IE E3 2005 and Killzone/Motorstorm
Watched his video last night and I don’t blame him. I’m pretty sure it’s his all time favorite game and he’s right, with all remakes, the foundation and the blueprint is already there so how does any studio and I don’t care who it is fuck that up? The game already exists. Just copy Final Fantasy VII Remake/Rebirth in my opinion. Just don’t fuck up the story, characters, writing, etc. and boom, it would be an easy 10M+ seller, high 80’s/low 90’s for reviews.
Matty said a while back that he either saw a video or images of the remake and was super exited and said that it would be similar to FF7R and it’s like, how do you fuck it up?
What I really want to know, is this on the studio(s), LucasArts Games or Sony. In all honesty, I put the blame on the studio(s) last because like with every publisher, what a studio can and can’t do is all based on what the publisher allows them to do.
I also agree that Larian Studio would be a perfect fit. Granted, that would be to keep it 100% turn based but I think they can pull off real time combat with some pausing/turn based combat ala FF7R.
If im Microsoft, I go after Larian of course but I also try to get this game for next generation and be like, yeah, we’re resurrecting it and boom, it’s Larian making the game. Get a great development studio and simply stay out of their way which is what Sony and LucasArts Games didn’t do according to reports and then add in a port studio and ouch, that’s not a recipe for success.
But oh well, it is what it is.
That’s not how it works. Final Fantasy 7R was first outsourced to CC2 but the studio wasn’t making good progress so it had to be taken internally in SE. Believe me those games are not like og FF7 in most ways, it’s not in any way a 1:1 conversion and KOTOR also couldn’t be a 1:1 conversion if it was actually going to work as a modern game. For KOTOR Even if the studio wasn’t the just decent/ok Saber it would still have been a hard job.
FF7 is a prime example how hard it is to remake these old games. They are over 8 years and hundred million dollars in and not even finished half way with the old story
The foundation and blueprint of a game is not the story, it’s all of the stuff they have to build from scratch. I think you’re really underestimating the amount of work that goes into a remake. Would anyone really look at REmake and think it’s easy to do? Unless it’s simply a graphics overall, you need a AAA team in place for these kinds of games.
Sonys cancelling a lot of games lately.
What’s tricky too, is it even worth the cost ? The first ff7 remake only sold 7 million copies and I assume the sequel sells around the same or possibly less due to being ps5 only . Also, in video games FF7 is a bigger name than KOTOR, so it’s tricky to say it’s even worth it. Plus you have to factor in licensing cost to Disney
