This should have happened at the start of the gen. Series S as a portable and Series X the console.
Problem with that would have been the Series S would have had to be a lot weaker as a portable in 2020 so either they would have had to make it so not everything on Series X would be on the portable or there would have been way more issues from devs complaining about needing to target the portable
Nah similar specs. Even if its 500 or 600 bucks.
Now you can do a Series S spec handheld for sub 500 easy. ROG ally extreme is 600.
At launchâŚok much harder. But I wouldnât be against a couple years after launch
ROG Ally gets about 1 hour of battery life in its higher performance mode. I donât think an XSS level portable is feasible even now with reasonable battery life. Probably need to get down to 3nm.
Thats a PC with variables and performance boost. Series S locked performance and a modest 720p res at that screen could easily yield a lower power draw and longer battery. Of course youâre going to have shit battery life on the ALLY if youâre trying to play Starfield at 60FPS.
People forget the Switchs battery life was pathetic at launch it wasnât until the Update model(which looked the same but had 80 percent increase in battery life) that it became a much more feasible handheld.
I remember buying a 50 buck Anker 30k Mah just to play BOTW while I was sitting in my car during long breaks.
The best they could have done in 2020 was a Xbox One level portable for $499.
Yeah I get that which is why I take back the launch comment
But they should have had one planned back then. Keep the Series S and then launch a portable in 2023 or betterâŚ2024
What is the best way to counter a PS5PRo? Is a Series S portable.
Donât talk to me about Steam deck and ROg ally mini PCâsâŚa dedicated Xbox handheld would give even Nintendo a run for its money.
I think it makes sense to run at 720fps to minimize resource utilization but at that point weâre talking about having three unique platforms to target.
I think weâll get what weâre looking for, just (likely) in 2026 when the technology is better aligned for it.
I like his analysis from a hardware perspective and I think everything he says makes sense but I question whether XSS games would be able to take advantage of architectural improvements, lower resolution targets, and upscaling without the games needing patches to do so.
Either way, should be interesting to see how this all pans out.
XboxEra wants the the handheld to support the current expansion. I donât think it will happen because that expansion takes up a few watts, maybe even 5. I think itâll definitely support it through the dock.
Expansionâs watt requirement will be marginally more then the inbuilt storage. Not much of a difference.
My concern is the space it would require on either of the sides.
They both have to be powered at once
seems to have some legs on this
Yeah that interview is as close to saying itâs happening without actually saying it as youâll get
Series S games and as minimal resources from devs, if any at all to make those games work Day 1 on the handheld should be the goal here
The interview is actually with Polygon, so hereâs a link to them for those of us who donât want to give clicks to IGN:
Good point, changing link. I couldnât find polygon tweet of it. Intrigued about this product
