Specs for a hypothetical Xbox portable

Phil liking that post definitely makes me much more of a believer but I wonder how they’d handle it all

Do they limit it to only Xbox content like the console does or do they give people the option to have other options like Steam

Obviously the former would be preferred by MS but with the steamdeck already offering both Steam and Windows/GP, even though obviously installing windows/GP is way more of a pain that it should be, maybe an Xbox handheld needs to allow more than just an Xbox OS

A lot of you guys are asking about Steam, but what makes you think an Xbox handheld is a PC in the first place? I hope that if it’s Xbox branded, it is Xbox through and through. It’ll have BC with Xbox games and will support Xbox games.

You can’t do Windows stuff on an Xbox so I don’t think you would be able to on a handheld either.

Exactly.

Xbox console is a console. A PC is a PC.

Yeah I don’t really know what I’m talking about so I’m just saying whatever comes into my head :phil_lmao:

I just think that while an Xbox handheld that plays everything that you could play on a Series S as well as GP would be extremely cool, it might be hard to convince people to pick it up over something like a Steam Deck that allows both Steam and Windows GP thanks to being a handheld PC

I have been saying it since we came to know specs of series S.

I’m talking like I know how it’ll work when I have no idea, haha. It’s cool to know they are looking into it, but still so many questions on how it’d work, what will it play, and so on.

Give the whole thing a read. It talks about why the Xbox Store would adopt only parts of the principals then and why that is, but they commit to closing the remaining gaps.

If they do make one, I hope they make it as open as possible. Basically, give me the Xbox OS but allow me to install Android OS, Steam OS, Windows, etc.

XB1 first then series s.

Why would they do that?

They probably wouldn’t, but why wouldn’t I hope they do?

If they sell the device at a profit I can see that. Otherwise there is no reason for them to be that open.

Yeah I think the principals were the 1-10 (or however many) and the final bullets were separate and explicitly called out Windows. Open to interpretion though.

Maybe they could do it as a way to make it as appealing as possible to basically everyone but hope that the Xbox OS/GP service is so good that most would just stick to that and not install others

Maybe that’s naive I don’t know but Steam has no problem with people installing Windows/GP on their device, although that’s a PC so not much they can do about it even if they did I suppose

A real Xbox handheld that gave the console experience but was also open to others would certainly be a big differentiator

Ideally they invest in making Windows better for gaming handhelds so folks that want a PC-like experience can buy an Asus, Logitech, or Steam Deck.

They can do that and everything else. It’s a $25 billion a year division lol.

Yeah, I don’t mean instead of offering their own Xbox.

Orrrrr, the next gen Xbox platform is better aligned with PC in general the two have effectively merged lol.

This part:

Nonetheless, we recognize that we will need to adapt our business model even for the store on the Xbox console. Beginning today, we will move forward to apply Principles 1 through 7 to the store on the Xbox console. We’re committed to closing the gap on the remaining principles over time. In doing so, we will incorporate the spirit of new laws even beyond their scope, while moving forward in a way that protects the needs of game developers, gamers, and competitive and healthy game-console ecosystems.

Do this and simply charge an OS upgrade fee if someone wants to go open. This way they will earn on there investment on hardware and won’t be in loss.

One way they can implemt it is via selling the compatible windows OS on the external ssd drive only which is what series S|X use and earn money from there.
