Specs for a hypothetical Xbox portable

Oh OK, I think they’d probably try to funnel folks into their own ecosystem tbh. Hopefully whatever mobile store they put together ends up with a good selection of games.

I cant wait to buy an xbox handheld and never use it. Like every other handheld I have ever bought (and I have bought many).

But im still gonna buy it.

The problem with trying to entice others that aren’t already sold, is the fact that most mobile developers just seem to hate Microsoft and likely wouldn’t want to make a version for their store.

But having Google play already there cuts out the middle man and helps them get more content.

I think if its an ‘Xbox Handheld’ they’d limit it to Xbox Store. If it was a ‘Surface Handheld’ then it’d be a more open windows device.

Yeah, but they won’t want to subsidize a device just to give Google all of the money from purchasing and micro transactions.

Exactly why I doubt they would. Having both stores(Microsofts being a PC/Console/Mobile mix) would mean that buying directly from the Xbox Store, Microsoft gets the cash, while opening Google play and buying from there Google does.

I think it can work, as not all games on Console/PC come to mobile and the opposite is true. Even with the push we saw with Apple and Capcom.

I hate how the ‘store’ has become so much more than a distribution platform and is an ecosystem on its own.

I’m too lazy to look it up, but didn’t MS talk about open app store principles during the ABK acquisition process? About how that would be for the windows store and for “next gen gaming marketplaces?”

Didn’t they also talk about that eventually impacting the Xbox console store as well?

I’ll look it up again, but I think there’s a bigger picture play they’re planning. Might be why they are rumored to be jumping into new hardware sooner than we all thought.

I think what they (and I) want is the ability to have their own store (or services like Game Pass) across their own ecosystem and other ‘closed’ ecosystems like Apple and Android. I don’t think they are talking about allowing other ecosystems in their own devices.

You don’t get one without the other

I think you do because nobody is going to consider consoles critical enough to force them to be open platforms. At least there has not been any indication of regulators hitting anything outside of mobile.

Expecting more details from Jez soon.

Wait till you have kids.

This gets very specific in what they’re thinking. Granted it was from nearly two years ago, but it goes into detail about Xbox and what gaps they’re committed to closing over time.

I believe that an open store approach for Xbox hardware could be a strong and unique differentiator. If it works well, it could attract more creators and distributors to the platform.

The parts about other app stores look to focus explicitly on Windows. That was a good refresher though, I forgot about that.

Whole an open store approach would be a strong differentiator, the fact remains that consoles are sold with a subsidy and they expect to get that back from software sales.

Handhelds are peak gaming and always has been for me.

PSP, Vita were queens, Steam Deck is pure magic.

An Xbox Deck with dual boot of lite windows gaming and desktop Windows would be absolutely stunning and I’ll buy it in a second.

The Xbox Deck sounds like something the windows team needs to work on, not the Xbox team.

But Xbox has experience in offering console like OS, which I don’t think would be the case for Windows team. Both need to work together on a project like this.

I mean sure, but Windows team is already working on a handheld mode for Windows similar to steam big picture.

Oh.

Well then, count me in !
