Sony in talks to purchase Kadokawa, parent company of FromSoftware

I am a bit glad the reaction has been overwhelmingly negative on this regard. If one would want to compare and contrast, then we can look over it. Bethesda purchase was for the sake of helping the business, especially when Zenimax has been all on live service aka trend chasing. ABK was all about saving the workers, even if the origin is to escape the punishment for the evil mastermind. Is there anything worth rescuing over Kadokawa?

If the purchase happens and they make them exclusive to themselves, the damage will actually be more severe than if CoD was to go exclusive. Yes, it would help Xbox greater but in short term. Long term, best to keep it open for everyone. As for Kadokawa, not only other platforms won’t get their games but so as other publishers. Bamco will be absolutely livid if they lose From for AC and DS-esque titles as well as Spike for DB. They will burn so many bridges. Don’t get me started on anime. It was actually rough that Netflix stepping in felt more of a bless than headache inducing.

If Sony makes them exclusive, I’ll long even quicker for the day that everyone wakes up and realises Souls-likes are just godawful “git gud” shit that exists only so sadists can feel good about themselves :stuck_out_tongue:

The current trend of everything being a Souls-like has absolutely done my head in - we seem to finally be getting over it, and if that hastens the decline of From’s sales (until they start actually being an accessible developer rather than “git gud” knobheads) after Sony buys them all the better.

Honestly I don’t see how Sony gets this past regulators with the complete monopoly it would have in anime - but then I thought the same about their past acquisitions in that area, it seems regulators just don’t consider it worth regulating.

I’d hope PlayStation are grown up now and moving beyond exclusives, but on the off chance they aren’t at least it might render Keighley speechless if Elden Ring 2 is a Sony first-party game (for maximum effect, pay Kojima to unveil it!)

Yeah I was thinking of that, Bandai Namco. I mean so far they have been publishing From’s games, right? But Sony would have no need of BN at all, they’ll just publish the games themselves.

For gamers there wouldn’t be any benefits, well except for the console warriors with the mindset of a five year old. Normal people don’t benefit from it, PS Plus payers don’t benefit from it because PS doesn’t do day and date releases on their service, unlike Xbox with Game Pass.

Let’s hope Sony won’t push for any form of exclusivity. Let everyone keep enjoying these games just like how everyone gets to keep enjoying CoD.

With Crunchyroll and Funimation I would say Sony already have a monopoly on anime.

This would just make them even more dominant in that area, what next HIDIVE? The only option left would essentially be Netflix.

From a gaming perspective I don’t enjoy souls games so this doesn’t mean anything to me, glad to see the reactions are mostly negative though.

Even if this were to go through I don’t think it would be a game exclusivity play and would function more like Bungie.

For some reason I thought Kadokawa were valued higher but they are currently at $2.59 billion so this is highly possible.

It seems the majority of their profits are from manga and anime so I don’t see this as a gaming acquisition.

Now we see if Japan has any interest in preventing a monopoly of the anime industry anywhere near the same level the US/UK tried to prevent a “monopoly” on a single IP….

Oh ffs.

Well, it’s an aggressive move for sure if they make FromSoft games exclusive to PS.

Good move for SONY amazed that SONY never really looked to buy Fromsoftware sooner.

Xbox had a wonderful relationship with From on the Xbox but blew it in the 360 era after poor sales of Ninja Blade

Some are making the argument that it’s mostly for anime and won’t necessarily be about making From games exclusive, but I’m not ready to" cheer" yet. Their games are media darlings, much beloved and would absolutely strengthen their first party offerings.

Now, we have seen some PS games such as DS come to Xbox, nobody expected that but it’s also a rather old game. Time will tell I guess. I’d be way more in favor of companies moving away from exclusive games, have it available everywhere and the customer just picks their console/ecosystem of choice. Xbox clearly is going that way, Sony? We’ll see.

SONY will have Fromsoftware go exclusive after all the deals with Namco run out.

I mean, DS was Kojima buying the IP.

I don’t think Sony would mind cornering the Souls market on console.

Yeah, that’s true about DS.

If Sony would release a PS6 with the promise of a new Dark Souls or Elden Ring exclusive for that, it would be big for them. That’s why I keep hoping Xbox won’t rush to day and date releases on other platforms. Have some compelling ex(albeit timed) exclusives for your next Xbox launch especially. And I have a feeling they will.

I care a whole lot more about them locking up Spike Chunsoft titles than I do about anything from From.

I forgot Kadokawa has Spike too, damn. Just when we finally get their games. Nothing has happened yet, but still.

Oh damn, I didn’t know that. That’s the AI games… :frowning:

This would really suck if they got them. From games do very well on Xbox despite the narrative that some are often desperate to push.

They will be even more screwed without Dragon Ball for revenue spike and Switch.

This deal going through likely means PSN will be a requirement on PC, considering peoples reaction to Helldivers 2 PSN. I wonder if they would just stop buy From games completely? We already know that any country PSN doesn’t exist will automatically not be able to buy any future From game.

Throw in the lost sales from Xbox and From will never sell as many copies as Elden Ring.
