Sony in talks to purchase Kadokawa, parent company of FromSoftware

Holy shit!!! We have now agreed on something two days in a row. The world is coming to an end!! lol

I hate souls games and wish the genre would die because they influence way too many games, the story is always non-existent, the gameplay/combat is clunky as fuck and the technical issues especially with From Software are always massive. Plus they look like 360/PS3 games. UGH.

As for the acquisition itself, this rumor has been going on every year since Elden Ring released and until it actually gets officially announced, I see it as just another bullshit rumor.

At least Mike Ybara is excited.

Why, I’ve no idea.

He’s right you know. The cost for them is far too big for Sony. But hey, maybe they want to be the next WB.

Yep lol, it’s one trend that arrived and just won’t fuck off - agreed, they use “hard gameplay” often to mask a lacklustre / nonsensical story and passable graphics, then also avoid the additional cost of accessibility options as “the game isn’t for people who need them”.

The sooner the genre fucks off and dies the happier I’ll be as it seems to infect so many other genres and series

I enjoy some Soulslikes, but in general it very much just feels like trying to throw in arcade cheapness for the sake of “difficulty”. More importantly, if games like AC could stop copying a battle system that’s ultimately extremely limiting, I’d appreciate it.

Hey look, someone else who’s mirrored my exact statements about Sony’s financials for the last four years.

I will say too, this isn’t the first time this rumor has made rounds and I would find it a bit hilarious if we had another Bethesda situation on our hands…

Edit: I hate the new “Siri”, Apple intelligence is really Apple Idiocy and I need to spend some time looking at disabling options across the board. Already have a config for macOS, just not tinkered with iOS yet.

Lol imagine the fanboy meltdown if they bought it for the anime then to make up the missing cash sold the dev studios and IPs to Xbox or Tencent…

Won’t happen but I think I’d need surgery I’d laugh so frickin hard lol

Prediction - If Sony does in fact acquire Kadokawa, I will say that they will remain multi-platform ala Bungie. From Software’s biggest success is Elden Ring by far and was cross-gen and multi-platform (5 platforms to be exact) and I wouldn’t be shocked to see a Switch 2 port because if the PS4/XBO base consoles can “run” it, I would assume that the Switch 2 will be able to as well.

I think internally they’ve rationalised it due to the fact that they can corner that anime market.

This said if this goes through they will absolutely make Fromsoftware games exclusive.

And I think this is the first time I’ve agreed with you Peter :rofl:.

Sony would absolutely lock up those games to their consoles (and PC), even if this acquisition might mainly be an acquisition about manga/anmie. Let‘s hope this isn‘t true.

I can’t imagine they cut PC out, that would be insane. Cutting out Xbox is more likely but still pretty crazy. I could see it being like Bungie though and remain fully multiplatform.

Yeah, Sony isn’t yet ready to do what MS is doing and well, apart from Indiana Jones which isn’t their IP neither is MS. So far it has been the expected games, but none of the truly big names just yet and certainly not day and date. I think we’re still far off from that. Sony even more so.

This is my feeling too. It would be a Sony acquisition, not Playstation. And Sony would want to maximize sales and profits, not hold it back by making things exclusive. The math & business sense changes between paying for an exclusivity/publishing vs owning the whole company and paying for all those employees etc.

Its a shrewd move by Sony. I also hope im wrong but 100% Sony locks from to PC/Playstation

Hahaha. Probably. lol

Technically, every acquisition Sony makes would be a Sony acquisition. lol

But yeah, I don’t see Sony making any of their games exclusive whatsoever especially when they have 5000+ employees and how often does From Software release a game? Once every three years or so?

Of course, first it has to happen which I highly doubt.

3 games the last 5 years: Sekiro 2019, Elden Ring 2022 and AC6 2023 with Elden Ring SoTE 2024.

So they have been having a pretty good run the last couple of years.
