Sony cancels Bluepoint and Bend's live service games - Bloomberg

All this hype over exclusive games from PS fans just to get 1 game per year that theyactually like. Funny stuff, if you didn’t know any better, you’d actually think they were releasing 4-5 AAA bangers every year.

Sony actually became everything their fans hated last gen- Gaas 1st publisher, dwindling AAA narative driven game output, losing exclusivity to PC.

Third party exclusive deals has been carry Sony for years. It’s why their first party drought doesn’t get talked about as much.

Playstation studios is an absolute disaster

Yep, and they have been arguably for years now… where are all the articles like we saw for Xbox in 22?

In general, this is bad and horrible mismanagement on Sony’s part but on the positive side, maybe Sony will stop persuing live service games because as evident by Concord and the eight cancellations, it’s simply not working for them. I never wanted Sony to go after live service games because as has been seen by many publishers (Square Enix, Electronic Arts and my personal favorite Ubisoft), chasing after the recurring revenue aspect is far from a guarantee and even worse is having studios do this when they’re not equipped or experienced in doing so. It’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It simply won’t work.

Bluepoint Games working on a live service God of War game makes absolutely no logical sense especially when they have the Socom, Killzone and Resistance IP’s that would be far better suited for a live service attempt than God of War. If anything, they should just stick to remaking the older games (Resistance, Jak, Sly Cooper, etc.) because that seems to be what they’re best at.

Bend Studio should have just gone straight to Days Gone 2 which would have been a far better decision than some kind of online multi-player live service game.

One thing is for certain, if they’re not shut down which I would put at a 50/50 shot at best at this point, we won’t be getting a game from either of them until PlayStation 6 and if I had to put money on it, probably 2030 if that.

At this point, im just hoping that the few games (Yotei, Wolverine and Intergalactic) I have on my list from Sony doesn’t suddenly pivot or some shit to where it becomes a disaster and in turn, cancelled.

Anyway, back to playing Star Wars Outlaws on Ubisoft+.

3rd party deals have been drying up too, Square being last of the big ones. Now they are left with games fron new studios like Wukong/Stellar blade.

You just have to compare last gen and this, it’s a big difference.

They will not stop pursuing live service games. They need their own and a MP failure costs the same as a SP one, but a MP hit can make far more than a SP one.

I need an updated assessment of what Playstation Studios pipeline looks for the next few years.

Horizon live service game… surefire hit that one.

Naughty Dog finally doing something their fans like instead of spinning their wheels on a canceled live service game.

Insomniac continues to hard carry an entire console generation.

I’m going to get some flack, but I think a God of War Gaas could have worked if they:

  1. had a different studio doing it

  2. had been something similar to Monster Hunter or even just pivoted to copy what FromSoftware is doing with Nightreigh(which honestly is pretty much Monster Hunter battle royal, but with bosses)

But then again I don’t think any studio other than Bungie(and even then that’s a bit if a stretch), has enough experience to make something like that happen for Sony.

And Fairgame$, let’s not forget that future Keighley nominee.

They should be thankful for HD2 to carry the massive baggage for live service. I know they want to push the same for others, especially Concord. That one hurt them so much, it’s domino-ing the rest of the projects. Xbox have many successful ones; just a matter of making up the cost since it is huge. Nintendo is grateful to have loyalists. So yeah, this is a mess.

And Xbox is about to release 6 games this year alone.

What a times we live in.

If Sony doesn’t release any big tentpole games this year, TGA might have to stoop to giving the GOTY to “Using my imagination to think about how awesome Wolverine will be.”

Yoshida wasn’t kidding about PS live service push. I know they’re still going to do them, but they wasted a lot of times with past ones.

“Live service for a remake studio sounds brilliant.”

True but the problem is that they have to HIT and outside of Helldivers 2, they simply haven’t been able to do so. Hell, they cancelled eight games and released only Concord which was shut down in two weeks. They’re literally 1 for 10 for a whopping 10% hit rate. lol
