Sony buying Bungie for $3.6 billion, Destiny 2 and future projects will remain multiplatform

Very well said.

And you can be 100% damn sure Sony isn’t all of a sudden the “good guy” now. Thought some more on it and especially after it’s clear Bungie made that condition…best believe another studio being acquired will make exclusives. So it’s wise of Phil realising the importance of exclusives. He sure did with Starfield, haha.

Almost feels like Bungie bullied them to this deal. I mean they were the guys that charged people for a content that should have been within the expansion already.

Ah, yes. You mean future Bungie games while coming to Xbox would possibly be more gimped versions? Sony holding back expansions at first etc? It’s possible, but it’s definitely better than if it had been completely exclusive to them. And who knows, maybe we’re gonna see a more friendly Sony now.

Yeah…right.

Yeah, I think also Xbox fanbase wouldn’t have liked another Mojang, which is a foreign body within XGS, not only for exclusivity, but also for basic stuff like crossbuy, saves, optimisation, etc…make Bungie rejoin the fold as an almost external dev wouldn’t have been met greatly imo. Also, like I already said, the other MS studios could have demanded the same liberty.

Exclusivity and consolidation talk aside, I feel like this is a solid purchase for Sony. It feels like a lot of money for one studio, but Playstation really does lack in the FPS and multiplayer space. Almost all of their exclusive games meant to draw you in to their ecosystem are third person action adventure games. They’ve relied heavily on the COD marketing deals but won’t be for much longer.

I left Destiny a few years ago but do revisit it from time to time. The story has lost me at this point BUT Bungie knows how to do gunplay, great environments, etc.

Congrats to the folks at Bungie on the deal. Don’t buy every game appearing multiplatform, but we’ll see how it goes. There is a lot of talent at Bungie and they know how to make quality games, so the studio is a good get.

Anyone who legitimately thinks this was some effort to answer back to the ABK deal, you don’t announce an acquisition after two weeks. This deal has been in the works in some capacity for at least a couple months, if not more, and would have happened regardless of the other recent acquisition.

Bungie legit have what is probably the best skybox and backdrop environment art team in the industry

Woa Hoeg Law seems really perplexed about the detail of this deal haha. It’s really strange seeing sony not taking any advantage from this deal to PlayStation.

I always find these memes stupid when i see them on twitter but I genuinely like love this one. Austin Powers is goated.

Yea I never thought that would happen

Bold move to go after Phil’s favorite franchise. Lord have mercy if Sony ever makes Destiny exclusive in the future. Phil may even go full John Wick on Sony with acquisitions :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

YOSHIDA: I heard you struck Jim

HULST: Yes sir. I did.

YOSHIDA: And may I ask why?

HULST: Yeah. Well, because he purchased Bungie and stole Destiny from Phil Spencer, sir…

YOSHIDA: Oh…

MS was in talks with Bungie a while ago but pulled out if I remember due to the price Bungie wanted. I think both MS and Sony were talking to Bungie, and when MS pulled the trigger on Activision they pulled out of the Bungie talks leaving them with Sony.

With either MS or Sony buying Bungie, Destiny would remain multiplat as these games rely on as many people playing them as possible.

I do wonder what the “usual” suspects think of this…

I mean on the one hand, yeah it’s kind of big.

But on the other stuff it’s all multiplatform GAAS and going beyond the console.

Sony paid $3.6 billion for one studio that owns one IP.

Microsoft paid $7.5 billion for 8 studios with 11 IPs.

Either Sony got ripped off or Microsoft got one hell of a deal. :kissing_smiling_eyes:

To my surprise, there’s a lot of divisive opinion around this situation. Like in the article above of PushSquare (a SONY hardcore land) people’s reaction is essentially “meh” and are worried about jimbo’s statements.

Geoff opened a poll on the most surprising acquisition. That’s going to be an easy answer unless you’re trolling or hating.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see the stock prices for EA and other gaming companies go up tomorrow. Both MS and Sony are hunting for content and a lot of studios and publishers are now potential acquisition targets.

Yup. The deal might be expensive but Bungie brings a lot of experience and technology to handle games that are outside of Sony’s wheelhouse.

See now THAT’s interesting.
