Sony buying Bungie for $3.6 billion, Destiny 2 and future projects will remain multiplatform

Check out the video from Hoeg I posted. It is explicitly clear that the games from Bungie in the future will be on rival consoles (see Chris Dring’s article and his follow up tweets clarifying that).

Yeah those ppl are not thinking very clearly here. Yes, it IS impossible for Sony/Bungie to start talks post ABK and conclude this fast, but that is not at all the scenario that is being talked about anyhow. What would have happened is Sony was in talks with Bungie (as were MS fwiw) and Bungie wanted a huge price tag. After months of talks, at some point they find agreement. This point HAD to be very recent since Sony as a public company can’t legally not announce it immediately once the deal is agreed to. So what happened fast wasn’t the whole deal, but rather the coalescence towards an agreement and that CERTAINLY could have happened as a direct result of Sony seeing the landscape shifting below their feet and taking Bungie’s offer.

Yeah, kinda, ah well.

It makes sense why MS decided not to do this, with CoD they have the biggest live service shooter there is. But if they were to have to go against Sony for the companies you mentioned…yeah they’re gonna go hard for sure.

Yeah he mentions how because Bungie basically is entirely independent if there is friction b/t Sony/Bungie things could get real heated/problematic for Sony as they have little means to impose much on what Bungie decides to do with their games. It’s an interesting point.

To be fair they recently bought Next Level Games.

Man I freaking love Hoeg, such a blessing we have someone who knows about this stuff to be so open with us

They should get Mercurysteam or whoever did Metroid Dread before someone else thinks about it.

Damn good get so we can be assured of Luigi’s Mansion 4.

I believe they’d have to buy a 40% stake from Avalanche/Nordisk

You know what? This whole chicken and egg fuckery of WeLl XbOx StArTeD It is starting to make my eyeballs melt. Do they know exclusivity existed long before the 360 generation?

Are they are aware that Sony are the ones who cranked the aggression of exclusivity up? 30 days vs 1 year? Or 2 years in some cases? Probably more in others.

You really gunna sit there with a straight face and tell me Xbox started this? Capitalism started this, but Sony -more so than anyone else- escalated to a new league.

I still think people don’t fully appreciate what a seismic event the ABK acquisition was. It very much signaled once and for all that Microsoft isn’t fucking around and they want to be at the forefront of this changing industry.

Multiplatform as in Xbox included. Ryan even said they were dabbling in being more open and everywhere they can. For Sony, it’s a relatively new strategy, so it’s still hard to see them going this route, being more “traditional”. Ultimately, I think they had to agree with what Bungie wanted : remain as independant as possible.

MS either didn’t think they were worth the value or imo the more likely option. Bungie don’t really vibe with Microsoft like that anymore lol.

Yep! I replied to that silly comment asking if he realizes that Sony has acquired many studios before, but it’s always MS being the big bad. Also that MS and Sony really are the lesser evils, if he’d rather had Tencent or Google having bought Bungie.

I don’t think there is anyone else that loves Destiny/Bungie more than Phil but he’s a great leader for a reason. He knows their asking price + demand for staying multiplat wasn’t worth the goals he has set for Xbox. Buying Bungie would not just potentially jeopardize AB acquisition but also future acquisitions. I don’t think MS is acquiring anyone that wants to stay independent in terms of dictating on which platforms to release. I think they learnt their lesson with Minecraft.

Agreed, my only hesitation is that PlayStation has a history of being dishonest and aggressive. Like I could very aggressive timed exclusivity and DLC exclusivity. Meaning we back to the Destiny days of pay the same price for less, and governing bodies look at it and think it’s somehow ok.
