So what's up with the Series X underperforming on launch?

For reference some performance issues mentioned in the June SDK.

Input reading:

IGameInputReading instances are temporarily being allocated on demand from the heap, to work around a race condition. Aside from the obvious performance impact,

Shader Performance

We’re actively working to improve both compile-time performance and runtime performance. If you have specific shaders that take too long to compile or aren’t meeting your runtime performance expectations, please email us at AskHLSL@microsoft.com or contact us on the Xbox forums.

Geometry Shader (Rdna2 gets rid of it, but it’s “emulated” by the driver for compatibility with older games:

In what way does Dirt 5 run better on the PS5? I’m not doubting it may well do given the issue with tools Xbox has but has there been a comparison of the final Xbox version that arrived at launch (not the preview one that was still being worked on) and the PS5 launch version that I’ve missed?

People acting like Series X doesn’t perform well. Seriously guys, a few frames difference is nothing to be worried about especially in a game coming from ubicrap. The game looks bad on all consoles, this is not a game you should take as a comparison example. Plus if you have a VRR TV you won’t even notice the dips or screentearing, it just runs buttery smooth.

The performance advantage of series x will come to fruition soon enough in games where it really matters.

Also both consoles cost the same, it’s not like you paid more for the extra power on xbox or something.

Can’t wait for the all the backpaddling every concerntroll here has to do then.

Enjoy the games people, Xbox is the best machine out there.

Since we already have the specs of the Series X do you have any idea what could be the bottleneck? we haven’t heard any developer talk about bottlenecks on the system’s architecture when for example there were a lot of complaints about the ESRAM/DDR3 back at 2013.

People are talking about software/dev tools issues because this is the only thing that makes sense.

I haven’t seen any real proof of that either. Only a tweet a week ago by someone that claimed Dirt 5 has screen tearing on XSX and none on PS5 and also pop in being apparently significantly less on PS5.

It’s sad that in 2020 we have tearing at all. ACV has it.

But is there tearing at all in Dirt 5? There was in the footage a week or two before XSX launch, but I didn’t see new footage since launch.

I agree that it is likely not a hardware bottleneck, especially since companies like microsoft typically run stuff like this through a ton of simulation and analysis.

Uh… Gears 5 120FPS mode? Hello?!

yeah MP one and halo MP is good because in multiplayer they prioritize FPS above everything

Does Ori count too?

yeah lol all the good ports from first party expect for halo SP(120 mode) need more work, the 4k60FPS mode is great

I dont know why you’re telling me this, its unrelated to my point.

Just pointing out where they say that Ps5 and SX are using the same settings as X. It was brought up in our exchange but back then I didn’t have the exact time stamp.

But as said its unrelated to my point so I dont know why your quoting me. It does not matter if the settings are lower then high, point is the consoles are performing like a 5700xt.

Performance is not just fps, which settings the framerate is achieved is very important.

One perfect example : See pc benchmarks for 2060S in 4k for Watchdogs Legion. It’s literally unplayable even at the lowest RT settings. But Alex managed to apply the same settings as SX and it made it outperform the SX. Going how the consoles are performing at X settings, I have no doubt a similar effect would happen here and with a 5700 you would see higher framerates and resolutions with the same settings as these consoles.

It’s obvious at this point. Games with GDK in use are having problems. Nearly all the new games and RT patched games.

Games only enhanced and still using xdk, like gears 5 and ori are having spectacular performance at 120fps and high resolution.

A reminder of how the SDK for Xbox One improved over time, and how under-cooked it was at launch:

I don’t think Turn 10 got enough credit for getting Forza 5 running at 1080p/60fps for launch, given the state of the SDK back then.

Another thing of concern is that there is no talk about any of the devs releasing a patch to fix the XSX games either. If it was an optimization issue , or lack of time, there would be a patch to fix it pretty quickly, or at least talk of it.

The silence is deafening. I would have expected a statement from someone by now.

They can’t make statements on a fix until they can actually fix it, would be silly of them to come out and say theres a fix being worked on right now if that wasn’t true. You should expect them to improve performance as do most games if they have optimization issues, do you not remember the RE debate.

I wouldn’t be taking no comment or silence as “deafening” and they have no plans to improve it.
