Review | Resident Evil 4

F to Speedrunners.

Good. Would like to see how Speed runners finish that area with the bridge and regenerator. They all fucking skip it like bitches lol

I haven’t reached that part yet but when I read stuff like speedrunners using glitches… yeah, that’s just straight-up cheating. I might as well just go & watch the end credits directly whilst skipping the game, it’s the same thing.

As for my own playthrough I’m on chapter 9 now, 15 hours into the game on hardcore difficulty (first playthrough).

It’s really good. I put the console into 120hz mode though to take advantage of the low framerate compensation on the Series X. I’m now playing in resolution + RT mode now as well simply because the feeling of lower framerate is pretty much identical whether it’s in the high 30’s, low 40’s & even high 40’s. It means the chapter 5 village section in the rain (most heavy hit to performance so far) feels similar whether I’m in framerate mode with everything disabled or in full resolution + RT. Because both modes drop frames & with VRR & low framerate compensation the feeling isn’t much different even if the framerate is technically much lower.

Dat boss fight in the barn. God dammit game is a masterpiece.

Yeah the Grilled Big Cheese is a much better fight than it was in the OG. To be honest all boss fights are improved.

I just parried an attack by a chainsaw dude who was literally on fire (chapter 11 down in the mines).

I think this is the best third person action game I’ve played in 10 years. It’s up there with the Gears of War & Uncharted trilogies.

I have super high hopes for the future of RE games, starting with an RE5 Remake based on the same gameplay.

Eh i wouldnt put the uncharted series anyhwhere near this. I mean they have great stories and cinematics but the gameplay is no way near a gears or re4 remake. Uncharted 2 for its time was amazing to pay but 3 and 4 tonme were monotonous and repetitive. The gunplay is no way near as good as the re remakes

The original Uncharted trilogy is legitimately good. The 4th had the best gunplay but it also had the worst story & pacing.

And there’s similar stuff in all these games, like the flow of combat & levels which require different weapons & strategies for different enemy types. The shield guys, the mini gun guys etc. Uncharted & Gears were inspired by the original RE4 anyway. The point is I’m really happy Capcom remembered RE4 is an action game.

As much as I love survival horror, RE4 is not & cannot be a survival game. I was concerned they’d make the ganados & cultists annoying like the werewolves were in Village. Fortunately that’s not the case. The parry system, the weapons (my fully maxed Red 9 is doing the job), everything is so good from an action game perspective in the Remake.

Yeah, gameplay is really top-tier and I haven“t been really annoyed with Ashley yet lol

At first when I got the prompts to control Ashley at the church I was like ā€œuh oh, here we go this is where it takes a nose dive!ā€. But it’s a simple system that really works. It becomes natural to engage in combat with Ashley falling back.

A sign of a good game is one where I actually look forwards to combat encounters & when I fail, I know it’s because I screwed up. The worst part so far was the worst in the original (the damn crank sequence in the large room). It’s like the part in Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty when Raiden has to cover Emma Emmerich as she makes her way across the water under the big shell. That sort of escort mission sucks by design.

But everything else has ranged from great to awesome. Even the boss fights are amazing.

Besides the gameplay being god-tier there is also the pacing, variety and the plethora of interesting and fun encounter designs that elevate the whole experience so much. It’s crazy when you think how dynamic the gameplay was in the OG game back in 2005…sure 3rd person shooters have become more accessible and streamlined in terms of controls since then but you don’t see often a game where you can shoot projectiles in the air with your weapons, strategically shoot different body parts of the enemies and mixing melee in there as well. Hell the way you kill the Regenerators alone is such a fuckin’ cool concept and it’s an enemy that is introduced so late in the game and not used that much yet it’s such a memorable enemy…Mikami’s team back in the day was on a whole other level.

Also as amazing as REmake 4 is I think that it’s a blessing and a curse in the same time for the next Resident Evil game, the positive word of mouth for the REmake 4 will hype up the next installment but at the same time RE9 will be be directly compared to REmake 4. While Village was a great game Capcom has to up their game with RE9 especially in terms of variety. content and encounter design to be able to be compared favorably with REmake 4.

I wonder if they will go back to the third-person camera perspective for RE9 or not.

I am betting that they will go back to 3rd person possibly with a classic character too (maybe Jill? hopefully!), I think the FPS Resident Evil saga is done along with Ethan’s story. If they decide to continue with Rose (which I am not seeing personally) going by the Shadows of Rose expansion it will most likely continue with 3rd person perspective there too.

Theres no variety in the uncharted games. It got old by the third game. In re games youve got host of weapons and enemy types. Uncharted has 0 mini bosses and same enemy types with thr same shoot climb set piece shoot climb set piece segments. 4s pacing is one of the worst of any game ive ever played.

I finished the Dead Space remake, how does this compare?

Dead Space is more horror. first time through theyre both fantastic DS offers more of a horror experience but RE4 has a bit more variety.

NO question RE4 has better replay value. Theres almost 2 different parts of the game with RE4. post game and main game. Post game is one of the best in any game ever. I’ve never cared to replay a game more than once or twice even for the RE games but RE4 I’ve beaten many times and I want to keep playing an unlock to secret stuff

DS for me was a really fantastic one and done game.

I don’t often laugh out loud when playing a video game but RE4 Remake has some serious standout comedy moments when it fully embraces its B movie inspiration. The latest one being in the Krauser boss fight (I won’t spoil the script but the whole fight is so hilariously Metal Gear-esque in its ridiculousness).

I’m 25 hours in & almost at the end of chapter 14.

It has a few yes but Original was funnier.

Sure. No senior moments or right hand coming off in this one. But it does have its welcome campy moments. Tbh my biggest gripe so far would be the reduced role of Salazar, but… I have such huge love for the original ergo I find this new one sort of compliments the original - rather than replace it.

I don’t think this new one is going to prevent me from doing my (almost yearly) replay of the classic RE4. It’s just now I’ll replay RE4 Remake immediately afterwards as well.

Good times.

Finished it today.

Yep. That is a 10/10 indeed.

Game is going to heat the debate around whether a remake is worth-receiving the GOTY award, coming the season.
