Review | Resident Evil 4

Sounds like Resident Evil 3.

Well the Xbox version couldnt, look better, run better, and control as well as the PS version. That would violate their Sony marketing agreement.

Well this is both good and bad. Good because the controls have been improved. But this is bad because of all the footage I’ve collected and analyzed for a video I was working on is now outdated lol

On the bright side, the performance has improved 5-10fps in at least one area that struggled.

REmake 3 wasn’t a case like this one, REmake 3 at launch run at a higher resolution than PS4 Pro but the frame-rate was in the 40-50s resulting in constant stutter which was really annoying. The patch lowered the resolution which made it a bit softer but overall the graphical settings were the same and the game run at a locked 60fps.

Here the IQ is a significant downgrade (Resolution mode now looks worse than Performance before the patch lol), there’s more pronounced shimmering/aliasing and most importantly there is a lot more pop-in now even in shadows (they also flicker too in some spots so a bug maybe?) which is really distracting. Also I don’t know if I am imagining things but depth of field in the cut-scenes looks worse now too to me.

Honestly even if you don’t want to put on your tin foil hat this case makes it really hard now not to…at the very least there’s something wrong with the Xbox version in terms of communication/testing internally.

Like how the hell the demo released with those control issues in the first place when the community spotted the problem immediately and even after the numerous complaints the game still launched with such a glaring issue with no communication at all about the problem from Capcom? and now this is patched after 15 fuckin’ days from launch while downgrading the fuck out of the graphics for a performance gain that no one asked for. Like what is going on there? :confused_wat:

At this point it wouldn’t surprise me if the Xbox version is outsourced or made by another team inside Capcom.

The downgrade is that severe IMO that is not worth it, after two playthroughs on Performance mode (no RT and no Hair Strand) with no VRR two areas had frame-drops worth mentioning (and they were still not that bad IMO): the first big Village fight and the first fight in the Island, the rest of the game was really smooth IMO. Before the patch even in Performance mode the game looked amazing IMO on the SX, now the downgrades really drag down the overall presentation of the game especially in the Village area…but even in the Castle which is a darker area with less contrast the aliasing is pretty apparent (which I didn’t expect) there too.

Over the years we’ve seen some patches addressing performance but I don’t remember seeing such a huge difference in a game’s presentation before and after a patch.

We need to let Capcom know, that we want our graphics back! This was easily the best looking version of the game!

Note: This game is technically designed for last gen. If it was full blown this gen title, result will vary differently.

I don’t think they will bother changing anything…we are most likely stuck with this which sucks because the game on SX looked amazing before the patch.

Also I bet the SX version even after this downgrade will perform worse than the PS5. mjpopcorn.gif

I mean it may as well be. Ps4 version is horrendous

Im not sure that is true. The game was originally announced for next gen only. The PS4 version was only added in much later.

I’ve reached the lake (I don’t want to spoil further) in chapter 3.

I’m playing on frame rate mode with RT enabled (I initially went for Resolution but the RT really does make a difference to water in particular). It’s smooth with VRR.

Basically this is next-gen, for real. It’s the most next-gen game I’ve played on the Series X so far & it automatically made Resident Evil 2 Remake look last-gen by comparison (jumping from one to another is now jarring). RE4 Remake is so, so good.

It’s like that George Lucas quote about poetry & rhymes, aka the gameplay is simply perfect. I’m playing on hardcore & the game is very forgiving for someone like myself who played the original a lot (I’m getting loads of handgun ammo drops). I think there might be some misunderstanding about the difficulty as well (I noticed people in reset for example saying it’s crazy hard). No, I’d say it’s the easiest new RE game I’ve played in recent years (the beginning of RE village on hardcore with the werewolves was way, way harder), i.e. for veterans of the 2005 RE4, the key is understanding you need to use the environment to its fullest in order to succeed. It means creating bottlenecks for the ganados to get caught in & using crowd control methods to take them out.

The parry system as well is simply… awesome.

I heard they changed the water physics when you shot it. Is this true?

I can’t say I noticed. I could use a spoiler tag here because I did shoot the lake (the fish namely) to see if Leon could trigger a certain thing in the lake like in the original (it did, to my great satisfaction).

I can’t say I noticed the water much though. I love the updated shooting gallery for what it’s worth, also shooting the molotov cocktails out of the hands of the ganados triggers some pretty impressive immolation physics IMO.

I just wanted you to shoot the lake for you know…

This might be one of those rare games when 2nd playthrough is better than the first.

I’m in chapter 5 now (still on hardcore). I take my time, finding all the treasures etc.

Ashley took some adjusting to, namely how to use the drop back/stay close mechanism & when to use either one. I’ll also advise people play the game in frame rate mode with RT & hair off. I just leave chromatic aberration & that sort of screen effect on because it makes no difference (or very little).

But RT & hair should be turned off to maintain a stable frame rate, namely in the rainy village section. I also find ray tracing has some inconsistent results, such as puddles can look a bit weird whereas the default reflections & shallow water areas look more artistic (this is most notable in the fish farm where the water with RT enabled loses some of its dirty murkiness & also has some unfortunate aliasing not present in the default non-RT setting).

And there area few glitches as well. Like Ashley can get stuck on some geometry or occasionally one of the enemies doesn’t react to Leon (I also noticed a bucket being blown across the ground in the rain storm… & then it just vanished.

Other than those nitpicks, it’s awesome.

This was so evil… but funny! There should be a sign or something at the side of the lake like ā€œdon’t shoot the fishā€. It’s guaranteed everyone will… & get what’s coming to them.

Resolution mode with VRR is the best now. Even without VRR it runs very well. Framerate mode looks too blurry

New patch

April 23, 2023

[XSX|S]

  • An issue preventing the game from launching when downloadable content has been installed and an account with content restrictions is logged in has been fixed.
  • Fixes to the stick dead zone (the range in which the controller’s sticks don’t respond to movement) made on April 7 have been further adjusted.
  • Changes to the graphics rendering process made on April 7 have been readjusted.

The aliasing/shimmering seems to be largely fixed on the Series X version (most notable around puddles in RT mode). Performance has taken a hit, again, but with a VRR tv this is mitigated. Overall the image quality is good IMO.

Aiming is slightly tighter as well.

Hopefully the IQ issues and the horrible DoF are now being fixed along with the unacceptable texture pop-in the Series S version. Also curious to see the further improvements in the dead zones.

I love the game but their handling of the Xbox versions was pretty bad overall, such a serious issue like the dead zones taking a month (which is actually more than a month if you count the 15 days before launch that we knew about this issue from the Chainsaw demo) to be fixed is not a good look for such a high-profile game. I guess this is what you get when all the versions of the game are not equally prioritized. :person_shrugging:

I can’t wait for the survey on this game, it will definitely not be a fun one (for Capcom).
