Review | Death's Door

The game appeals to me because of the fixed camera and looks like it might be a nice stop-gap until TUNIC comes.

This game doesn’t appear to support Quick Resume for me on Series X. Anyone else having this issue?

Working perfectly for me. I’ve gone in an out of the game so many times now.

Darn. I’ve been having a similar issue with other games, but when QR works, it’s a dream. Hopefully we can start to see better communication from Xbox about these inconsistencies.

I’m still working my way through to the third Big Soul Boss, but figured I should max out my character a bit to make the most of it. I have all the weapons and 3 of the 4 spell upgrades and all but the last level of combat ability upgrades for +1500 souls.

However - I’m getting tired of the last two shrine obstacles. For me that’s the challenge level (for lack of a proper name) in Camp of the Free Crows and the final large green mace guy in the Overgrown Ruins arena that you grapple shot and arrow shot over to. I just need a few more seconds in that challenge section, but just can’t manage to get it down. So frustrating.

I remember that fight taking me a few tries. I ended up mostly throwing bombs at it and trying to play keep away and I eventually got them.

I just finished this last night.

I really enjoyed it and it was worth the purchase, but it never really elevated itself to that “Holy shit this game is amazing” type level that the greatest games do for me.

It was super solid though, with satisfying combat, beautiful art direction, amazing music, and an interesting story with funny characters. The maps were a bit too labyrinthian and the lack of a map certainly didn’t help that, and some of the game was too directionless (like never properly telling you that you can stomp on those circular platforms and travel to other circular platforms), but overall it was very enjoyable.

Wait, you can stomp on those circular platforms to travel on them? I ignored them because I thought it would be something unlocked much later . Oh well, it was a good game, but yeah, could use with a bit more direction.

You end up underneath them and then get a nifty pathing thing to go through to end up elsewhere. It’s usually to pickup larger soul clusters. It’s a nice mechanic. I didn’t know about the STOMP mechanic, where you hit “X” when walking down from higher elevation and it does a strong attack.

As for direction, after killing some of the Big Soul Bosses you’re kind of directionless, but if you go back to the old large Crow in The Lost Cemetery he’ll give you some guidance. I entirely forgot about him.

I finished the game and I literally never realized there was the stomp mechanic lol. To be fair, I didn’t go for a completionist run so I probably missed a good bit.

Loving the game so far, but this game would greatly benefit from a minimap.

Would had loved and option to bind the controls to my liking. I barely used the heavy attack due to it being in such an odd button.

The control scheme is giving me issues when trying to do The Challenge section to get to the final Vitality Shrine outside the Camp.

I’m at Betty, and know I’ll absolutely hate having to do the far longer battles afterwards. Not looking forward to those one bit. I just want the chill exploration aspects.

Got 100% ten days ago. Great game, loved almost every part of it. There were some things that were too obfuscated like sewer grates, but I really enjoyed my time with it. The postgame content was good, and the combat felt great. Shame it has some missable achievements, though.

Not every game will be “best game ever” calibur. Its a very good game. Much better than a lot of indies that come out. People rate Carrion I found it to be mediocre. This game is on another level. It might not be a 10/10 but thats fine.

Alright, I’ve had enough of this damn game. There’s been 3 times where I killed Betty just to die from the falling snowballs, and guess what, I have to do the entire fight all over again.

You can do it. Trust me. Stay strong.

I just beat it this morning. I found the game to be difficult at times, but never unfair. Took me 18 hours to get to 90% completion, going to attempt to grind out the last 10% and the rest of the achievements (except for the umbrella one).

I’m frustrated because it’s taken me so many attempts to get to the point of beating Betty, to see the big pink soul start floating up just to have my last pip of health taken away from stray stupid snowball.

I want to move onto the post game content and really do not like any of these boss fights. I don’t like them in any game ever. It’s never been my thing. It’s frustrating to me because I can’t enjoy the parts of the game I really love. I’m stuck at these stupid gatekeeper events.
