I still don’t understand what was the point of Linneman’s statement, was he implying that PS5 has a secret sauce to even things out? multiplatform games won’t have as much difference between the two systems as many are expecting or that PS5 versions will be better? I guess we’ll see in the future what this meant.
As others guys already said the first signs of PS5’s capabilities are interesting to say the least, Demon’s Souls which is the best looking PS5 game at the moment runs at 1440p to hit 60fps with no RT (correct me if I am wrong). That’s a PS4 Pro level of resolution and lower/on par with One X’s average resolution target on most AAA games (and those two systems are way weaker than the PS5). If the development tools are great then what is the reason for this unexpected concession in terms of resolution? imagine PS4 launching with a great looking game running at 640p/60fps and almost everyone being ok with it, wouldn’t that be weird?
I don’t know guys, I am definitely not an expert on the hardware side of things but I am really curious to see what “the smallest difference ever between consoles” according to Matt or what the “both systems have their pros and cons” according to Linneman translate to in real life performance.
Please eliminate system wars and offsite drama. Will be going back through this thread to clean up offsite drama shortly. That sort of discussion is both inappropriate and toxic.
Also friends please keep discussion on topic. While I’m very excited for the Xbox value proposition, we do have plenty of other threads to discuss that in. This thread is specifically focused on the Playstation teardown.
Xbox has made the most powerful console in the smallest form factor this generation
Xbox has made the most affordable next gen console capable of 1440p/120 frames per second this generation
Xbox will have a global launch with Xbox All Access offered in 13 countries
Game Pass offers console/pc/mobile gaming with high quality titles and day 1 releases of first party
MS f’n acquired Bethesda, one of the most talented, diverse publishers in gaming with absolutely iconic franchises that will be exclusive to Xbox/Game Pass. This acquisition has effectively made me decide to never buy games again and only subscribe to Game Pass.
Back compat games are going to improve with the new hardware and be available at launch meaning for the first time, thousands of games are available to play on day 1
Xbox outclassed the competition on hardware, services, and games. There is no better option from an economical point of view.
I feel this is correct, but I would also add it’s a lot about genre. The kind of games Sony makes (highly cinematic, 3rd person action-adventure) are highfalutin. It’s what the awards shows like, it’s what the critics like, it’s what places like Reddit and Resetera like, because all of them are fuel for the “games are art” stuff. But it’s not what I’m into. I really only care about a fun gameplay loop.
I don’t know, I feel like “games are art” is best exemplified through indies taking chances and not AAA action-adventure. Personally speaking, I’m way more interested in a game that shakes me emotionally, and two of those off the top of my head are multiplatform (NieR and NieR Automata)
Edit: Not to say that a highly-cinematic 3rd person action-adventure game can’t be powerful, I just don’t think that they go hand-in-hand like some might think. I definitely don’t think that there’s anything inherent to a platform exclusive that makes it artsy. It’s just kind of a loosey-goosey metric that I don’t really like. The Ori games are touching and visually stunning, are they art? What about Cuphead’s extremely replication of a style?
Same although I’d argue when the 360 dominated it pivoted to game’s being about MP and that sort of thing and I think the type of games that are in vogue are driven by the dominant console rather than the other way round.
Considering WD’s track record over the past year, I would be wary of any claims they make. Sony really needs to put out a list of approved drives if there are any.
I wouldn’t say I’m an “expert” from a games development standpoint by any means but I am a software engineer that deals works with enterprise software/hardware scaling up to HPC sector, and any claims that there’s some secret sauce that could bridge the rather large gap between the PS5 and Series X is pure fanboy delusion. When viewed across its memory bandwidth, GPU (CU, RT hardware, output, architecture, etc.), and CPU, there’s simply nothing that the PS5 can do from a software standpoint to overcome those deficiencies especially when that’s assuming that Microsoft’s team doesn’t have some of the best software engineers on the planet (which I think any doubt can be absolutely put to rest after the events of the current generation). This also ignores the obvious fact that Sony is relying on SmartShift, or something very close to it, and therefore both CPU and GPU can’t be boosted simultaneously; heat’s not the issue but generating additional power beyond what the PSU is capable of outputting is physics impossibility. Lest we also forget that Linneman is the least reliable in the DF crew from an objective standpoint, I think it would be wise to listen to what developers who have access to both kits have actually said on record at the moment (think the technical lead at Codemasters).
There is quite a bit of difference in the dies considering that they are both using the same tech. What can be read into the XSX having more Components around the APU than the PS5?
Obviously there is more going on than just some extra CUs.
Seriously guys, let’s stay on topic of the PS5 tear down and not turn this into consipiracy theories on the media trying to damage control the PS5 hardware. There really isn’t damage to defend or control, so either discuss the tear down and hardware or don’t discuss anything at all. We’ve already sent out a warning and much rather not have to close this thread.
Thanks.
If you look at the link I provided, the word comes from Ubisoft.
Thanks I already did before but please can you point me where is the exact quote coming from Ubisoft themselves saying AC Valhalla will run at 4K60 on PS5? It is not even in the official press release.
All I see is the writer of Eurogamer making the assumption using his logic that if it is 4K60 on XSX so it is on PS5.
He says according to current report AC Valhalla will run 4k60 on PS5 but there is nothing of this sort in the current report. Unless he is speaking of another one I don’t see it anywhere
Here is the official press release:
“With the Xbox Series X | S, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will take full advantage of the enhanced graphics, giving players the opportunity to experience the open world of Norway and England down to the very last detail. On Xbox Series X, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will run at 60 FPS in full 4K resolution.”
Why would they omit PS5 while they mention both platforms in their said press release.
About the teardown itself -which is the topic- everyone should expect that ps5 will be running hotter than xbox given the difference in clockspeed.
As any pc modder can tell you, the higher you run gpu frequency the much higher the produced heat will be. Sony’s solution of spacing out components and having the biggest enclosure in console history is more of a nessecity than anything else.
Hopefully it will work out as intended.
