[PLEASE READ STAFF POST] Microsoft says they have committed to Sony that they will keep Call of Duty and other titles on Playstation "beyond the existing agreement and into the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love."

It won’t. Watch COD will still do better on PlayStation.

Folks.

They’re a business. If the decision they’ve taken means more people continue to play a game, but you get it as part of your subscription, what’s the worry?

The console wars? C’mon now.

I’m already seeing some borderline hilarious overreaction in this thread. As such, it’ll be placed on slow mode to prevent those of you that are more emotional about these things a chance to go outside and touch some grass.

Keep it clean.

I’m gonna be gone for a while today, but thank you Searsy for having the most even-handed, sensible take on this so far.

How can you be happy if you’re not crushing your enemies?

I actually think this is a brilliant move. MS is playing the long game. Now MS can go after other big publishers like EA and Take Two. Lets say MS is able to grab both of them and make all the games multiplatform.

If CoD, RDR, NBA2k, Madden, FIFA, Overwatch Diablo etc are available on all platforms but Gamepass is the only service you can play them on then that gives Gamepass and Xbox a huge advantage. Also MS would have marketing rights.

Right now regulators dont see Gamepass and sub services as the primary way that people will access and play games in the future. If MS keeps purchasing big publishers and IP but keep the games multiplatform then regulators will let it slide.

Any possibility of what they wrote to simply mean that ganes available on the pmatform witll be supported and made available on the platform past the agreement but not necessarily newer games? I mean, to me its still ambiguous.

Several people, including me have shared our frustration, not because people with Switch and PS get to play the games.

But the very real possibility that Sony keeps making those timed exclusivity deals, making us on Xbox miss out on big games for a year or two. And also studios that may have started to bother with Xbox (because Xbox is the place for CoD, meaning people buy Xbox or sub to GP) probably won’t now.

Far too many make the mistake of thinking that being a fan or supporter of a specific console is the same as being a fan or supporter of your favourite sports team (I’m a Rangers fan btw). If this makes the deal plain sailing and ensures it goes through smoothly then they should go for it.

All future CoDs are going to be tied to Xbox from a marketing and mindshare perspectives and no doubt in whatever way MS can shoehorn it into the metaverse, whatever that actually means. Oh and It’ll be available on Game Pass day one rather than having to spend £70 on it, like i said previously mindshare is the key for the next few years as the streaming/subscription/acquisition story unfolds and everything Xbox is doing is designed to get them to number one.

Ill reiterate we do not know how many games will remain multiplatform or not so until then its best not to rush to conclusions. For all we know “popular games” could literally just mean COD, Overwatch, and like Diablo".

Some people are overreacting and way too attached to their preferred platform. They never said every game is gonna be multiplat. They will definitely make some exclusive DLCs and will market Xbox as THE platform to play ABK games.

It’s the most logical move.

I’ll repeat what I’ve said last month:

I think it’s very different than the Bethesda situation.

I don’t think COD (and maybe OW2) will be exclusive.

I think it’s because they can use them to bring lots of players to Xbox (much more than with Bethesda) without doing a full exclusivity.

In doing so, they will not shut down the huge amount of money coming from other consoles players, and at the same time many will just move to Xbox for other benefits. Also MS still looks good for whatever that’s worth.

So what does Xbox gain?

No more deals or exclusive content to PS.

Separating COD from being attached to PS is alone a huge win. All marketing points to Xbox now.

Perks like early access and exclusive content makes Xbox version the version to get.

Exclusive spinoffs.

Older titles in Game Pass.

And of course, day one in Game Pass is huge, especially for a game people (and their friends) buy every year.

And they keep getting all they money from other consoles.

If that doesn’t work out the way they want (which I doubt), they can lock future titles one by one.

and still buy it on PS because they aren’t buying a second console for something they can still get on PS

You underestimate how many people buy consoles based on the console it is associated with in marketing on TV ads.

I think this is a bigger plan on pushing Apple and Google closer to having to open up their closed gardens so MS can get xCloud and Game Pass on their platforms easier, that’s the market they really want and right now they have no way to get there.

That’s fine, but what about that monthly subscription called Game Pass ?

It will be enough for Xbox to get back some of that marketshare they lost in a couple years. They are already competing with Sony with the Series X|S and GP offering right now.

Will the average gamer sub to game pass just for CoD or some Activision games if its available elsewhere? Could have caused a paradigm shift with these IP’s and they seem content with the status quo? Idk thats just my view on it. Jimmy is not coming over to xbox if he only plays cod and he has a ps5 for it. I think yall are overestimating people’s willingness to change if they can get x stuff in a place they have.

Also Why the discrepancy on Zenimax to Activision besides price?

We live in a world where exclusive content is king, as abundantly evident by Disney +, Netflix etc etc… yet we have some in here suggesting that it doesn’t matter.

It’s just extremely naive.

it’s about making money, ms doesn’t care about “mixed messaging” to gamers.
