State of Play has been rough for a while. Last good one was last year today with 3rd party focus (irony). Last one wasn’t received well and Suicide Squad, the game they gave the floor stage to, got delayed. The name is damaged, so Showcase would have been fine to go with since it has received well. Well, not so much after the last one…
Yeah who knows, for whatever it’s worth it didn’t seem like they kept stuff out to me, it looked more like they really scraped the bottom of the barrel to make it an hour long show.

late to this conversation but the funny thing is that even with it being 1 year development from a new studio, this is one of the trailers that showed a good chunk of gameplay and was one of the most interesting things they showed at the showcase. Admittedly there may have been a lot of smoke and mirrors but i didnt get desperation vibes looking at that trailer.
If anything the thing that reeked desperation was showing CG trailers for the likes of Fairgame$ and Concord, and maybe even Marathon, all first party games. Especially with Concord, which didnt even allude to what the game would be

Showcase or State Of Play though?
SoP is obvious but a showcase? If their games weren’t ready to show now, i’m not sure they would be in a few months either
Sony is confirmed to be at Keighleys summer games fest show in a couple weeks so I think the best case scenario is that Sony will have an extra thing or two to show there, but anyone thinking we are gonna be getting a major AAA first party reveal 2 weeks after their major showcase is gonna have a bad time

Oh this show was originally just some random crap our interns made as a joke but we decided to present it to you as a big important showcase. Our real show with all the hot killer app stuff the media said they saw is later this year, stay tuned!
Those who are so adamant at defending the show don’t even think these things through. All this would change is Sony being innocently off the mark with the show, to Sony being knowingly misleading.

Just watching this one now, they brought in Jaydub to join them and damn the amount of copium he shows at the end trying to justify this was atleast a 7/10 show. you will not be disapointed
It’s funny that fake insiders want to predict a showcase later this year. Not only will there not be a big E3 like presentation this year, but Sony won’t have a large showcase until PS6 is announced. PlayStation just isn’t big enough anymore to have these large showcases. Smoke and mirrors directs that focus on deep dives are PlayStations future. Now will certain people prop up these smaller PlayStation directs as E3 level events? Probably, but that’s just cope and gaslighting at that point.
The thought of believing in Second Showcase is actually scaring me for a moment. It reminds me of that South Park episode on Yelp Reviewers, where the reveal is those reviewers believe they’re incredibly relevant to everyone because of their status. Case in point, people here believe PS can do no wrong and this is 4D chess.

It’s sad when after the show ended, the best way to cope is to attack on Xbox and Starfield. I mean I can talk about the problems with PS showcase without saying anything about Xbox or even Nintendo. Same can applied to others.

I can see the frustration PlayStation fans must be feeling because the competition Xbox wants to grow and expand into value based subscriptions. And PlayStation is stuck trying to protect its status quo, but at the same time not really growing at the pace needed to compensate for longer development time frames.
Unfortunately rather than internalizing the changing industry dynamics, and demanding more from PlayStation they will probably just lash out at Xbox for being unfair meanies.

I was replying to a conversation people had above that comment, I don’t know how you extrapolated that I meant it somehow makes it better, I wouldn’t even have noticed it if nick hadn’t pointed it out.
I think Sony also had two showcases in 2020, but it is a bit weird how many are jumping into the "Sony must have a second one ". I guess the expectations and hype was just too high on this one, both from insiders and fans themselves, and then with the show being okay, they are immediately thinking something went wrong, because Sony can’t have an okay showcase.

Expectations were sky high for a number of factors, mostly the absence of a showcase last year and the long distance since their last showcase. Additionally, after spiderman, there isnt really anything from sonys first party for fans to look forward too, theres wolverine which has given literally zero info, and some moneyhats like silent hill, but nothing else was confirmed. Also factoring the confidence of sony doing their showcase a few weeks prior to xboxs not longer after the bad news of the CMA blocking their acquisition and a rather hefty failure from Redfall, people were expecting as devastating blow from Sony.
