This is open world though. Ratchet is not. Open world game are more demanding on visual, it’s why linear games tend to look better than open world games. Spiderman 2 still looks great in the 4k footage.
I know but expectation is always a challenge.
To be fair, taking control away from the player is the specialty of Sony games. It’s not like the player actually performs all those amazing Spiderman animations. You just press a button and something awesome happens.
My god what it the point of this thing?
people were spoiled with the ratchet graphic so a big surprise to see the visual of their next game to be okay-ish at best.
It just looks a bit ropey. I don’t think it looks bad…but it doesnt look like a graphical heavy weight. I think its important to note the importance of new engines for new generations.
My general thought is
- 5 years for a sequel
- 6 years for a new IP
- 7 years for a New IP and a new Engine
IMO Insomniac needed to take an extra year and build a new engine to get SM2 to look proper next gen but in 2018 they didnt have the luxury of Sony owning a lot of studios and when you don’t own many studios you have gaps…so they didnt get the time to build that engine…so it looks last gen.
If it was cross-gen thats explicable. But its allegedly PS5 only.
People thought (myself included) that this would be the first game on the next-gen era after the crossgen games from last year, and it’d be a step up, and it turns out it ended up being less impressive than GoW or Horizon.
But it still looks nice, and it’s a 3 year development cycle game after all, so they don’t deserve the flame, i hope we’ll get a bit less focus on graphics if that means we’ll get less games that need 5-6-7 years to release. There can still be studios greatly focused on graphics, like Ninja Theory with HB2, Naughty Dog etc, but not each AAA studio should be required to deliver a visual benchmark game.
I think Avowed will be underwhelming graphically too for many people, do we know when did it start and the size of the studio on it? it’s a “new IP” , an open world with decission making, made by a not that big studio that was never highlighted by the graphics of it’s games.
We all need to be more realistic about the reality of game development, even more after yesterday’s showcase, there are no miraculous studios, it’s all about it’s size, budget, and how much time they are given.
Part of using the same city and expand on it makes a new Spider-Man so easily made. Yakuza does the same. I think a balance is needed. You need your showcase games but you also need content. For perspective HiFiRush a relatively smaller game took 4 years. Imagine what a big new game with a new engine would take (looking at Fable)
Avowed looks good to me, from that one blurry leaked picture. Then again… I’m not a graphics whore type of gamer. I like a good looking game but i don’t need it to look state of the art. It’s gameplay over graphics for me. Maybe that why i find Spiderman 2 to look good while others don’t. It’s all a matter of preferences when it comes to graphics.
A game setup that is knocking corporate capitalism while being filled with GaaS microtransactions seems appropriately bound to fail.
People actually saying spider man doesn’t looks good. Sure it’s not horizon levels, but the gameplay looks a lot more interesting.
So there’s a movie coming at the end of this year about Kraven. Didn’t know about it until now.
Now I get it.

I don’t know, just feels like “been there done that” type vibes honestly. I’m a huge Insomniac fan, so maybe overhyped myself, or just sequel fatigue.
I know Venom and Carnage. Guess you have to be really into the comics to know who Karven is.
Apparently, he’s a well known antagonist of spiderman. He hunts him. That’s his thing, to hunt. It’s a Stan Lee created character, so it’s dating from way back.
I didn’t know about him until now, so I was very confused yesterday. My knowledge about Spiderman is pretty limited to be honest.
Here lies the issue with Spider-Man 2 in comparison with the Arkham games:
- Arkham Asylum was a metroidvania and was amazing!
- Arkham City expanded the game and gave Batman a playground to work within (mini open world)
- Arkham Knight gave us killer graphics and an entire Gotham City with car mechanics.
Spider-Man 2, just like Miles Moralas, and just like Spider-Man 1… ALL use New York.
There are levels within the game that do the story beats, but it is the same areas.
Also, unlike Tears of the Kingdom, which also uses the same map, Tears gives you 2 other areas to basically play in with new mechanics.
The new mechanics here is the ability to play as two spider-men. One with Venom powers and Miles.
The story looks great, and I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. However, we literally just played Miles a few years ago. Fatigue is going to happen with this franchise unless they do a Spider-Verse and go to “different” New Yorks.
I believe I saw Snitch hype tweet earlier. Did he really know or just guessing like us?
