PlayStation acquires Housemarque and Nixxes Software

Looking at all PS Studios acquisitions over the years, all the ones that are still operating (Bend, Guerrilla, Housemarque, Insomniac, Media Molecule, Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch) have a good track record of exclusive games launched on PlayStation plaftorms before they were acquired.

It’s good for both parties, since they both know each other, how they work, etc. But it’s a pattern not so open to wild cards acquisitions.

somebody should ask Jim Ryan about Psygnosis

oh, and did they bid on Leyou just for shits and giggles?

Thing is they weren’t built from the ground up like people expect Xbox to do, MS had partnerships with a lot of the studios they bought yet that’s not ok. I don’t think partnerships have to mean exclusive content they could be things we don’t know about like how Todd used to call Phil for help on certain things I would class that as a close partnership when the head of a company is asking for help.

The truth is that it’s easy for the company with the larger platform to say that you should only buy companies that already only make games for you. It keeps them at an advantage because most companies can’t afford to go exclusive on the smaller platform. It’s intentionally muddying the waters to make the smaller platform look bad for not competing in a way that it really can’t.

A great fit all around. Both of them. This will bring significant stability and allow them to do even cooler stuff.

Great gets. Albeit not so ahem… Organic.

Yea the hypocrisy knows no bounds on the Sony side, If I hear “organic” “deserve” “perfect fit” anymore to justify a purchase like this and then rage on MS for doing the same thing I’ll scream.

Bottom line both companies use very similar business tactics to grow and acquire studios but to a huge majority of the gaming community it is only Sony that can be justified to do so.

You might question what an acquisition does when a games developer only makes games for you anyway in the last decade? I guess control. It’s a good fit for them but not a surprise is it?

It’s not really just control. They get established companies, dev teams, procedures, studios and the offices. Makes it much easier to scale up. Maybe Housemarque couldn’t commit to large growth to make bigger or more titles. Sony’s backing might allows this to happen. Similar to what MS have done, I still MS as a company is way better setup to scale out these things.

prevents a situation like bioware for MS. They may only make PS games, but if someone like tencent/EA comes and buys them, they will go multiplatform, and you lose an exclusive

Interesting theory that would have some merit in my opinion

Sony might as well just announce Bluepoint today or later this week since they leaked it themselves…

But I guess they’ll probably wait to their SoP/FoG event and show it off with a new title they’re developing.

I was hoping some of you were just being cynical about the hypocrisy that would be on display, but I’m seeing a lot of prevarication and dissembling. It’s just sad. Choose a stance that’s consistent with your beliefs and stick with it, or be honest about changing your mind. Don’t try to talk out of both sides of your mouth to say it’s justified in one case and not in another.

It’s obviously not a one-to-one with the Zenimax acquisition for several reasons, but even so, your ideology shouldn’t be so flimsy that you’re unwilling to address the way it’s making you look. At the end of the day, any fanboy just wants to cheer-lead their favorite company instead of thinking of what’s good for themselves as consumers and what’s good for the people directly affected by these big business moves. Deeply pathetic :frowning:

Seeing as Sony won’t want to leave money on the table I’m sure they will still make multiplatform games
