A chat with Phil Spencer about next gen Xbox consoles
During Microsoft's E3 2018 media briefing, Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced work had begun on "the next Xbox consoles".âŚ

The initial shipments of course but what about six to twelve months when Sony has served a good portion of their hardcore base? All of a sudden they have to market the console to more of the wider general gaming demographic and $150 suddenly becomes a serious issue.
I agree, I dont buy the âIt was Cernys masterplan to clock the PS5 at 2230mhz!â Cerny even said that smartshift was a later addition. I think the PS5 was originally planned to be around 1800mhz and priced at $399 with minimal loss, But they got word of Microsofts plans and changed there course. Theres a sweetspot of clocking GPUs beyond a certain point the performance gains start to require vastly more power, it makes no sense to design a console with such high clocks it just adds uncessary work. Kudos to sony Sony though, it seems they acted fast enough to tackle these extra challenges.
Not only that, if it was his master plan to design for such high clocks and meet the performance targets you can bet they would talk about how they achieved that.
Nothing they showed illustrates how their gpu will benefit from such high clocks when equivalent gpus goes to the complete opposite route precisely because itâs a more effective way of increasing performance.
And quite frankly, if it were so simply to âjust design for higher clocksâ Iâm sure Nvidia and amd would eat that all over instead of having significant size changes for their gpu line up scaling with performance.
I think it was more Microsoft wanted the most powerful console for marketing purposes but knew that would make them more expensive, so engineered another console to capture the more budget oriented from the start. Letâs consider that usually console manufactures capture this end of the market a couple of years into the generation, as they are able to cut costs. Microsoft has essentially skipped this part and gone after it from the start.
Yes, that was their goal with 2 consoles.
But I mean why they took so long to announce the prizes even when SX was super well positioned. (And even DF was sure it would be 600 dollars).
I think that for SX Ms did indeed targeted a 600 dollar machine spec wise, but it was always going to price it at 500 to one-up in performance but match in price whatever Sony could come up with.
âŚIt really feels like people think the digital edition exists for reasons beyond why it actually exists. It wasnât designed as a counter to Series S, they didnât design the system specs, losses they are willing to take etc around countering It. It was made to frame the base edition in a better light and an easy up-sell, also likely to soften the blow of the base edition being a certain price above expectations. Even knowing xbox prices, itâs hard to say Sony is willing to lose an additional 50 or 100 or whatever dollars per unit when in most likely cases they still outsell their competitor 1:1.3 or 1:2. Not to mention they seem to have firmly put a lot of their investments into securing exclusive content. Iâm expecting 449 and 499 at lowest.
I agree, the digital PS5 isnât really a Series S competitor, itâs just a PS5 without a drive. Itâs there to have a lower âPlaystation 5, starting at XYZâ price. If they do end up with something like $399 - $499, I wouldnât be surprised if the DE is only available in limited quantities.

I have no idea and puzzled as well because the two consoles are sensibly priced.

My only explanation was that 1up moment.
Specially since Phil was the one that had to announce the X1 price and you could tell from his face he wasnât too happy about it. Iâm sure he wanted to have this win, of letting Sony announcijg their prices and them coming with SX matching in price but exceeding in performance and SS for having the insane price point entry.
PS5D $399 PS5 $499
Theyâll take the hit
NOOOO 429 / 499 I stand by this

Lol. I remember that moment. You could see the anguish in his face when he announced the price. He will still get his win when Sony announce their price and the Series S is significantly cheaper and the discourse is about the price difference.

So another question then, do we think MS have have stated ERP so they can reduce XSX if needed after Sony reveal? No room to move on XSS I think.

I was wondering that too. Quite weird to see they announcing as ERP. Imo that was indeed the reason so they still have some leeway if Sony reacts.

Yes, I think so. I expect that Sony will wait until a couple of days after MS preorders open, specifically the 24th to reveal their strategy
There wonât be another version of the Xbox after this - MS is out of the hardware business and software only as soon as it is viable, which is possibly as soon as six years from now. The All Access plan its a peek at the future - only reason for the console at all is to sell GP. MS doesnât care about anything else at all
Lol

What if I told you that the only thing (at least 90%) of what Phil is judged on is software? That is Nadellaâs strategy across the company, and my friends that work for MS are judged solely on subscriptions, as was I when I was there. MS is a subscription company, and honestly most tech companies are following the same model these days. Look at the competitors such as Amazon and VMware (same, subscriptions and software only). Even a hardware giant like Cisco is looking to revamp their entire strategy to accommodate cloud and subscription services going forward, cutting severely across the board to change the direction, but I digress.
Apple has already proved to be the only tech company that can get away with creating their own hardware for a living, but their branding is unbelievable. Bringing it back to gaming, Nintendo is like Apple. It doesnât matter what they do, there is a horde of followers that will buy their games. My honest opinion is that Sony is in great danger of becoming a dinosaur, and Iâm not sure that they will survive long term without revamping their strategy. Even if MS is to produce another console after this generation, it will be an all-digital one. No more physical, and everything is GP
Yes, this just feels right.
They could do
PS5 - $499
PS5de - $449 + 3months PSnow + PS+ and Spiderman mm, astro playroom 2.
But sony have done $399 for there last two consoles, they like $399, $399 feels right for PS5de.
Yup. Canât see any other price really. They are going to eat a lot on that PS5DE.

Of course things can and do change but this question has been directly asked to Phil and he doesnât seem to agree, donât see any reason to doubt currently. MS HW division is massive they donât only make xbox. âEven if MS is to produce another console after this generation, it will be an all-digital one. No more physical, and everything is GPâ

Please donât speak on behalf of Microsoft employees as though from the inside. Reason Iâm allowing the post to stand is that a lot of this can be assumed from the outside however it should be presented as such.
After further reading of this thread, itâs gone way off topic. Please keep it on topic to Playstation pricing.

Update: According to new information, Sony is going to match the price of the Xbox Series X.
