In 2014 alone Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2 (which humiliated Drive Club) and MCC.
There were many others in 2015, 2016, etc.
Nobody cares about exclusives. Sony had so many great games during the PS3 era, it didn’t make a difference. Two things sell consoles: price and power.
I agree that the early Xbox One games were better than playstations output, but playstation was cheaper and Xbox talk was still doninated by kinect and all. I also remember that drive club looked insane and decidedly better than forza horizon 2 (don’t get me wrong fh2 is the way better game) but graphics played a major role back than and DF just got rolling with their technical reviews. This time things are different. Playstation has the market lead (2013 both were almost the same) and the hardcore audience already made up their mind. Most will buy playstation no matter what. But I do believe that a cheaper price will do good for xbox. But yeah, no way Xbox has any chance this holiday season. Over time Xbox will get some ground, because they have great games in the pipeline and I do think Xbox Series S will be a 2nd Console for many playstation owners. So yeah I am optimistic for both consoles. Both will do good
Phil’s a genius and made the best out of what he had in 2014. He has a real plan and everythings pointing to it working (otherwise he wouldn’t have been promoted in 2017) He is basically changing the game industry right now and made some really cool features mainstream like bc and cross play. Also Xbox One X is a masterclass in console design and Series X seems to follow that. Pushing the technical boundaries here is something I deeply appreciate. Also the games are getting better and quality seems to be a priority now. Delaying an important game like Halo is the new and right direction instead of forcing titles out. Also basically tripling the number of xbox studios is another very good move. There is really nothing bad I can see about him. He has a real strategy with gamepass and xCloud and the new Xbox Consoles. It’s insane what he managed to do in these few years.
You seem to want Phil to engage in console wars instead of making the best product available. Going on Twitter and dunking on Sony isn’t making xbox the best possible product.
Here’s a secret. Exclusives mean almost nothing for the sales of consoles initially unless you’re Nintendo. As enthusiasts we make up a sliver of the market. I personally buy all consoles because I love first party games from each of the big three.
Most casuals play sports games and shooters exclusively. This generation will likely be PS5 at the start because they have FIFA, COD and 2k21 marketing rights. The only way that Microsoft can combat this is if they can get a huge publisher on game pass. After that they need to continue to inform people exactly what game pass is. A marketing deal with Netflix would be huge. Call themselves the Netflix of gaming and get casuals to understand how game changing game pass really is. Microsoft knows the sales between now and after Halo dropping will be crucial to maintaining a big enough population.
Every generation one console ends up in the zeitgeist as the best place to play prior to launch and usually the snowball effect continues enough to maintain momentum for the majority of the generation. Initial sales mean little because it’s based on scarcity. Microsoft needs To be the place people are talking about if they want to be even close to Sony this generation.
Did you watch the video?
Cerny states producers and others involved are much more involved then just being communication lines.
Cernys title maybe lead system architect, that sounds like he gets the final say in everything, but according to cerny in the video this is not the case, cerny decides the flavour of the system, he probably choose x86 again and decided to focus on ssd, cpu + gpu would of been heavily influenced by price. Im guessing Jim ryan got the final say on price after being briefed with loads of price statistics. Cerny would of given Jim and other playstation bosses the low down on what was possible at $399 and $499 etc.I jave a feeling there oroyginal plan was a 8.2tflop machine 36cus @ 1800mhz to try and get to $399, but those plans evolved.
Before I replay to the quotes below, I just want to say that I didn’t know that you could copy a reply and quote it in your own reply. So freaking cool. I’m liking this site more and more everyday!!!
In general, all great games but none of them were for me. I will agree that 2013 launch, 2014 and 2015, Xbox One had the far better exclusives and stronger lineup.
Except for the tens of millions that actually buy exclusives. Look, exclusives are not the be all end all but they do sell your console to casuals because if a casual wants to play Spider Man, he will buy a PS5 and can still play his COD’s and whatnot every year. It’s not just that, it’s about giving your own hardcore fanbase games that you can’t play on another console to where you want to invest into that eco-system.
Sony screwed up early on during PS3 and still ended up in second place where as Microsoft screwed up in 2013, still hasn’t fully recovered and seems to do everything but cater to those who actually want to support their console and eco-system.
Price matters. Power matters. Exclusives matter. IT ALL MATTERS. Anyone who believes that it’s just one aspect here and there is simply delusional.
I’m still buying PlayStation 5 day one BECAUSE of their exclusives. At the end of the day, Sony has my confidence 100%. Microsoft, not so much. They need to earn it and they simply haven’t, at least not yet anyway.
Come on man. Put your favoritism aside. Cuphead and FM7 does not beat out Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Knack 2, Nex Machina and whatever else Sony published for PS4. 2018 was God of War, Detroit and Spider Man against Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 and FH4. 2019 had Days Gone and Death Stranding against Crackdown 3 and Gears 5. Overall, at worst, it’s a convincing victory in favor of PS4. At best, it’s a slaughter. Doesn’t even included 2020 which as amazing as Ori 2 surely is, TLOUP2 and Tsushima crush it. Seriously, come on.
Spencer is freaking great. Perfect? Nope. But great? Absolutely. Mattrick killed Xbox One in May 2013 and left two months later. Xbox One was dead on arrival because of his screwups. Then Spencer had to deal with Terry Myerson who basically eliminated the funding Xbox One should have had and wanted to eliminate the gaming division completely. If it wasn’t for Spencer, it’s a guarantee that you wouldn’t have Xbox. Spencer is the man who convinced Satya to actually give a shit about gaming and Xbox and to heavily invest into it.
Spencer didn’t gain true power until late 2017. In the time since, he launched Xbox One X which as of now, is still the best gaming console released in history in terms of specifications and simply what it can do and what it offers. He’s acquired 7 studios and built 2 from the ground up since then.
He made the decision to put their exclusives on Game Pass which is a brilliant move and one I wish Sony would copy but I know they won’t because well, why would they when the majority of exclusives go past 10m+. But for Xbox, it’s a brilliant move. Releasing their exclusives on PC day one is also a brilliant move because they’re going after a user base that isn’t buying a console anyway.
Do I believe that Spencer is living in a gaming utopia and too friendly? Absolutely. He’s trying to do the right thing and I give him credit for it but when your competition isn’t playing the game as you are, you need to adapt or you get left behind.
I do NOT want Spencer to go after timed exclusive games or content because it is in the long run, a waste of money, accomplishes truly nothing unless you’re a massive delusional fanboy and screws over consumers from getting those games/content day one on the other platform.
With that said, I DO want him to be much more aggressive in regards to studio acquisitions as well as getting third party games as either full Series X/Series S and PC exclusives (meaning not timed) or get those third party games into Game Pass day one.
Black Myth: Wukong is a perfect example. Spencer should have already contacted them in my opinion and be in constant communication to work out a deal. You get support from developers and studios in China, you would get what will be an amazing game either exclusively on your console (and PC) or in Game Pass day one. I truly don’t care which. Just get a deal done.
That’s truly my only complaint with Spencer. He’s simply NOT aggressive enough and he needs to be because you can’t just stand there getting punched in the face repeatedly. At some point, you have to punch and fight back. Spencer doesn’t have to be slimy or anything. Just be aggressive with what you need in the long term anyway which is more development studios and getting games in Game Pass day one (exclusive or not).
But overall though, Spencer has revitalized the Xbox brand. I’m more hyped for Xbox Series X and the Xbox brand than I have been in almost a decade and that’s because of Spencer and the decisions he’s made. Again, he’s not perfect but no one is. He just needs to be more aggressive and have a killer instinct (and KI 2 wouldn’t hurt either) but without being an asshole going about it.
I have had every PlayStation console and have looked over or played some of the launch day exclusives. Let’s be honest, all Miles Morales has to do is match 2018 Spider Man and it’s already better. Anything extra would just be icing on the cake. Hell, the brand name itself make it’s already the best launch in PlayStation history because what else would it be?
The fact is that everything Sony has shown is supposed to be a 2020/2021 title, including Horizon. That could change with COVID, but it’s extremely likely the first year of PS5 will have
Miles Morales
Demon Souls
Ratchet and Clank
Horizon
SackBoy
and a bunch of limited exclusives, marketing, and a huge player base to draw from
MS will have
Halo
Flight Simulator
Pyschonauts
Better BC, and GP.
I’m not including Indies and smaller games in this comparison, because I feel those will be equal. The first year is going to be a bloodbath, but MS should hold their own in 2022 and later. Me, I like RPG’s so I have to be patient, and wait for 2022 and beyond. And lean on BC in the meantime. At least Psychonauts will be out next year …
The way I see it, platform holders get the side of the media and hardcore fans by choices and games which trickles down to the casuals then just spreads like a virus.
Right now the only advantages sony have is there 100 million installbase, because of this bigger installbase social media engagement is going to be bigger then xboxs and they have more games coming within the next year, like a rift apart, GT7, Spiderman:mm, horizon 2, demon souls.
Utter nonsense, under Phil xbox has delivered the best console hardware, the amazing gamepass, xcloud, expanded xbox game studios from like 7devs to 15, is bringing great games like avowed, fable, hellblade 2 and more.
With the current model no exec is going to push console sales to rival or beat the PS5, unless they massively undercut or the Series S is like…$200 bucks or something close.
Away from the obvious points, I wonder the panels thoughts on when we see a tear down from Sony and how far they will go in talking about what they have running under the hood.
A part of me thinks that they are not going to pull back the curtains on what they are running. It will be another Mark Cerny PS4 Pro style interview where when asked the questions about performance and specs, He will frame the discussion so that he can place their work as the smartest and most elegant method for a console. It is even how the Sony fans framed the difference in specs after his GDC talk. I wish Sony would go with more transparency, However I don’t see that changing anytime soon. No reason to change a winning formula.
Talking on a winning formula, Do we think that Sony will run away with nextgen because of their performance with PS4? I keep looking at the data of how consoles sold over the years from release and the playstation 4 had it’s biggest rise in console sales when the PS4 slim was released. The drop to $299 USD was the catalyst for many gamers to shell out the cash. Price is going to play the biggest hand in how people transition into Next Gen.
I think we won’t see that till almost at launch like a unboxing video or maybe they don’t even do one and just let DF do it when its out. With how they have been marketing the ps5 you can see they don’t want to talk gpu or cpu but rather spin the media to talk about ssd and audio .
