I can see why it is crucial for Sony to make boat loads of consoles. That is where platform and games are played and currently they don’t have the capability to launch games day and date on PC
Still it is a risky because they may invest a lot in hardware and may not get much in return. Casuals have an option to buy handhelds these days and there rival has a low cost console entry.
It is still positive for the platform and it’s players
if they hit that 63 million target then it might be 2.5:1 which isn’t good imo. I know Microsoft play a different game, but they need to start producing more consoles and get things going on that end because that gap doesn’t look good imo.
Well, it’s working. More people commited to the platform, and with the strong third party support it will remain the de facto console in many markets. First party is allready strong and growing at a pace they can handle.
Their upcoming showcase will be really interesting.
It’s really not about console hardware. It is about platform end point.
I say, shake up the industry and let third party manufacturers make consoles with there added benifits. Maybe third party could bring games on the platform. A lot could be done.
MS has done this via gamepass. They may do it with hardware.
eh, I think it’s still about hardware, and I don’t think console space wants other manufacturers using an Xbox OS.
Anyways, PS5 isn’t slowing down this gen and is on pace to surpass PS4 units sold. Also, sales being this strong means easier for them to flex on third party deals since much cheaper for them to do it compared to MS.
PlayStation also treats it’s third party well, advertising it almost like a first party. Both for timed exclusives and games like Hogwart’s with just marketing and content exclusivity. I can imagine that being very interesting for third parties…
While true, I think you still have to have consoles to get interest into subscription services. At the mobile cloud is nonexistent as a reason to sub and PC has roadblocks with windows store. MS will need to increase console output because you don’t want gap to be this large compared to PS5 because at the moment it’s nearly 2:1 which doesn’t bode well about third party deals that will continue to happen
Yeah, they have S tier marketing because they pretty much let you know that it’s best to be played on playstation and don’t really let it out that it’s on other platforms.
I wonder if it’s like the Wii where it had a lot of units sold, but people weren’t buying because they bought one just to have and only bought the mega blockbuster every year.
I wouldn’t call that statement very accurate in regards to Nintendo’s first party… nearly every title of theirs sold at least 10+ million during its lifespan (and many of those titles sold above 25 million). Third-party software, this statement is definitely accurate, but Wii was a massive success for Nintendo due to the volume of sales for hardware and its software.
Chip production is getting more expensive, not cheaper and it’s yet another reason that I tend to dismiss the mid-gen refresh rumors… it just doesn’t make sense technically or financially. Besides, as I’ve said ad nauseam, the PS5 and Series hardware are fantastic pieces of kit that don’t share the same deficiencies the PS4/XOne had that all but required mid-gen refreshes.
Thanks for the correction. That’s what I am thinking about Playstation not hitting revenue is they’re selling a lot of units, but they may not be spending that much on third parties. So, it does bring the question what is the average spend/year for a PS customer because theoretically it should be much higher. I think the Nintendo point is valid because while Nintendo is in a similar situation with customers, but it seems a Nintendo customer will spend more money on first party output compared to average PS user
So PS5 may be Sony’s Wii? a lot of consoles sold with extremely low attach ratio on software. That’s what you get when you attract the casual audience I guess.
120m PS4’s sold but the top selling exclusives were around 20m. What happened to the other 100m PS4 owners? Even if you want to say half own two or bought two PS4’s for whatever reason, the other 40m PS4 owners didn’t buy those games.
The only games that sell on a yearly basis is COD, sports games and for some odd reason, GTA 5 even though that’s probably more due to GTA Online than anything.
I guess they’ve got a load of PS4 owners upgrading to the PS5, but playing what? Fifa? COD? GTA 5 with next gen update?
We’re living in super interesting times IMO & I’m super curious to see what the reaction from Sony’s faithful will be when they inevitably release a PS5 pro in the next couple of years.
I think quite a lot of PlayStation owners buy the console expecting a long shelf-life whilst also not buying many games either.
