Phil Spencer interview - Discusses Redfall disappointing, CMA, Hellblade II, quarterly releases, and more

Yeah people forget about Stalker and that whole situation. Fuck Putin.

Even Forza Motorsport. Announced before FH5 and released two year after. Something was delayed here.

2022 was probably in debt of COVID and international problems.

There is still a boss in charge of Bethesda below Phil.

What has the 60fps issue to do with these release dates? These games were not delayed a year because of some frame rate issues.

And im pretty sure Too Howard told us all the 2022 release data of Starfield and we all celebrated it at E3 2021.

Starfield, while coming out in September, will still be Xbox’s big holiday title, but was supposed to be a 2022 holiday title and not 2023. So the tel question is: what was supposed to be this year’s holiday game and are we getting an extra game this year because of it or is MS purposely pushing something back to keep the Gamepass beast fed!

Look the big thing is MS tried to be hands off and just let their great acquired studios do their thing.

Obviously we’ve seen how that’s worked out, and I’m sure as Phil has said they aren’t stupid. They will be more hands on as they go forth.

There are arguments to be made on both sides of the fence with their initial hands off approach, but with how it’s played out that time is over with. Phil said they are gonna be more hands on and we will see how this plays out.

My guess would be Hellblade 2 or the rumoured Gears collection.

Probably Forza Motorsport

It’ll come with familiarity and experience.

Not every studio can be treated the same. Playgrounds, Coalition, Obsidian, etc etc. You can take a hands off approach with them.

Studios like Machine Games, Arkane, 343 ? You probably need to be a guiding hand and help them out.

It’ll come with time.

Phil has earned so see the fruits of his hard labor. Hearing him in this interview it looks like Xbox finally has it first party content on lockdown. Every quarter something hits Xbox (Game Pass). As much I love Phil, he is not the guy that Microsoft needs for its mobile era. Phil is too nice to fight Google/Apple. I think in two years he resigns as CEO of Microsoft Gaming and stays as a senior advisor. 2025. 10 years of Phil. Xbox healthier as ever. Time to get some new blood.

Phil Spencers’ don’t just grow on trees. Phil is leagues better commanding a press conference than Jim Ryan.

Phil Spencer is a great promoter, he just needs more games to promote.

Solution make more games.

Something tells me more games won’t be much of an issue in the coming years. It will be interesting to see where the goalposts will move when all of these games come to fruition.

I finally watched the whole thing and not just some clips and at some point they ask him about the lack of transparency regarding Redfall being 30FPS on consoles and Phil and co knowing that a while before launch and not saying anything and I was disappointed, yeah he says they need to be more transparent but wow it took him this long to realize that…?

Whenever they show off their games at shows it’s almost always running on PCs and while I’m sure they have a big audience on PC they’re called “Xbox shows” I would love to see games actually running on Series X during the next show, I’m an Xbox console player, not a PC player. Sony doesn’t seem to have an issue with this.

It’s possible that people just get more and more attached to whatever ecosystem they’re in as the generation goes on, especially if they’re very happy with the games they’re getting, the less Xbox delivers the and PS does the more people they’ll get, Xbox needs and I believe they will have a second half of the generation but they need to carry that success unto next gen, the start of this generation was rather weak and I believe The Medium and Flight Simulator were the only next gen only exclusives they had for a while.

That’s the problem with their studios, it took a long time to get the ball rolling. I have a feeling MS thought that they’d have stuff ready much earlier but we ended up with a “draught” (personably I never ran out of content to play with Gamepass but whatever) and now it seems like they need to end up with a bang in order to start the next Gen on a bang but also keep the momentum and goodwill.

I know MS likes to leave their teams to do what they want, but the my need to get some “hero” teams going, like the ones that do the epic AAA experiences that let people expect from Sony. Then they need a few support teams that will do the AA stuff in between. And then if the studio is big enough then maybe have some more experimental stuff allowed with a small time. Except Double Fine, those guys can do whatever the hell they want!

They also need some big central pillar studio for support like mocap, asset creation and the like. I think Sony ha something like this, could help bring up the quality of the visuals and help with storytelling in their games.

It feels like MS leave each Studio to do their own thing in terms of every detail. A good support studio like that could have really helped with Redfall’s shortcomings. Like why isn’t there a cinematic team like at blizzard that only does that kind of stuff but for Xbox? I don’t know, maybe I’m completely in the wrong here!

But once MS hits cadence I think we will be in for a treat.

Also, gotta start next Gen with Elder Scrolls 6, that would be guaranteed success!

Add to that list people who purchased Series X’s but are now going to sell them because there’s no games to play.

Too many games are being released by Microsoft, and third party publishers are not happy about it - a GI.biz article probably, followed by multiple YouTube videos with thumbnails of concerned faces.

Of course, it already happened. We have threads on another forum of people quitting Gamepass because too much games to play.

Either too many games to play, or they say there is nothing to playa en it’s only filled with “crappy indie” games aka Gamepass filler. Always pushing the goal post while I’m here feeling like I’m robbing MS having renewed for 3 years with the gold trick and never buying games almost lol. Even at full price Ultimate feels cheap to me!
