Phil Spencer interview - Discusses Redfall disappointing, CMA, Hellblade II, quarterly releases, and more

It will literally happen and Xbox with gamepass will be a monopoly

When the games don’t hit the standards the community demands it will be xbox can’t manage their studios and if the games are good, xbox stole games we would have gotten to play on our console of choice

Realistically we had a once in a lifetime global pandemic at the exact time Xbox has been trying to rebuild their first party. That Obviously slowed many things down

Many games from everyone have been delayed but it seems as always Xbox gets the brunt of negative coverage for it. Bad timing and all but without COVID we could already have a lot of games popping out from Xboxes recent purchases.

Sonys 1st party has not done much of anything so far this year and we know almost nothing about what Sony is doing in the future but becuase its Sony thats ok it seems.

It was a big reason I traded in my PS5 after I played God of War Ragnarok. There were some ups and downs owning PS5 from launch, but at the end of the day it felt like nothing was announced for PlayStation. I get Xbox criticism and all that, but I am baffled at the lack of PlayStation criticism from gamers. I traded in my PS5 for a PC so at least Spider-Man and Final Fantasy will eventually hit PC… beyond that… what a total lack of excitement. Compare that with Xbox and it’s dozens of announcements. True Xbox needs to do more, but man PlayStations lack of announcements are depressing.

Selling more consoles than Xbox is more important than games to some.

Something tells me more games won’t be much of an issue in the coming years. It will be interesting to see where the goalposts will move when all of these games come to fruition.

[/quote]Exactly my point. I feel the stream of first party games is finally on lockdown. So let Phil enjoy the fruits of his hard work labor. I just don't think he is the guy to take on Apple and Google.

Phil is such a good press conference speaker (and to a lesser extent good on TV as well). You just don’t get rid of that. Phil is skilled and unrivaled in that space.

That said, there is a very big problem going on at Xbox. They wasted a huge opportunity by not producing enough consoles to meet demand. Also they need to change the series x to be a 2tb model / series s 1tb.

Additional console variants… I mean look at this… just look at it!

More of that, lots more, basically a new custom console every quarter. Available to buy on the shelf, with accompanying ad campaign.

The thing is that I don’t think it matters now. Sony could release no games for two years and Microsoft release a bunch of the best games ever made but people would still say Xbox has no games and Sony are proven in their track record.

It’s how it is. I don’t think that narrative will shift because it’s peoples justification for their choices.

That is so true. For illustration, we just learnt that HFW sold 7 millions unit. At the same time, FH5 has 30 million players, same as Sea of Thieves. Grounded has 15M players, and so on. The result is that HFW is a mass market game, whereas Xbox games are niche.

They should almost treat the Series S the same way they do their controllers

Pumping new versions and new custom designs out the ass, there’d be people out there that would buy more than one just because of the custom designs and how cheap they are

Does that include all those bundles it’s been added to since launch?

Yeah, it’s cheap enough to pump out lots of different custom designs.

Even I would buy an S with the right design, if only to put on a shelf lol.

I actually wish they sold high quality paper sheathes or something along those lines to put the console in instead of just variants. It would be a quick way to change which one I was using, is easy to collect, and would have less environmental impact than people buying extra electronics.

Its simple, if Sony does it then its ok, to some Sony is the default and = to gaming itself. Even though MS have been putting out games decades before Sony even tried in gaming.

Yea, at some point Xbox gamers need to slide away from the internet gaming community and just enjoy Xbox and the games. On the internet Xbox gamers will always be treated like crap from Sony trolls and the gaming Media will magnify Xbox issues and try and hide Sony issues.

Sad as it is gaming is more fun actual gaming and not talking to other gamers.

This. And I’m glad he acknowledged this too. He’s made mistakes and he owns up to them. We all remember the tweet of him with Bethesda after he had just seen Starfield and Redfall, and soon after that both were delayed. I can only imagine in what state Redfall must have been there. But we can only hope things go much smoother next time. The studio that made Prey is good for it. It’s a very unfortunate misstep.

Phil also said he will always let’s creators make whatever they want to make, personally I say yes and also no. Let’s say Arkane told Phil they want another stab at a Redfall like game (fat chance), I would hope Phil tells them to maybe try something else. He made a point about how he doesn’t want studios to be only making one type of game if they don’t want to, which is fine, but boy would I have taken a Prey sequel or Dishonored 3 over Redfall. I sincerely hope Arkane DOES play it ā€œsafeā€ for their next one. They are kings at it.

Let’s not forget that when the Dishonored games and Prey came out they didn’t land on Game Pass immediately, sadly these games weren’t crazy successful, which is a horrible shame. But now with Game Pass? I can absolutely see tons of more players checking it out, discovering how awesome it is and voila, fanbase grows.

This ties back into my point about marketing. There are narratives set by the gaming media and fanboys in a console gaming bubble that need to be countered. It sucks but it’s on Xbox to educate everyone.

ā€œXbox needs to make games that appeal to gamers to build hypeā€

Sea of Thieves had 30 million players. Let’s assume that it’s half that because one half decided to stop playing in a week’s time after its debut on Gamepass: it was still played by more people (15 million) than those that purchased God of War Ragnarok. Sure, it was free on Gamepass, but we’re talking about appeal. Compare all the hours streamed on Twitch, SoT wins. Compare number of viewers and number of streams, SoT wins. Compare current number of players, SoT wins.

Apply that to Forza Horizon 5 and Horizon Forbidden West, Xbox compares favourably. Grounded and Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart. At worst the appeal is comparable, around equal.

The idea that these games lack appeal is garbage.

Hype isn’t always a function of quality. Marketing and existing media narratives are a huge part of it.

If you look at forums and the gaming media, you would think that God of War is a more popular and more lucrative IP than Roblox. That it holds more appeal. That it rakes in more money. All false.

What I see are fanboys and gaming media gaslighting everyone into believing these false narratives. All of this doom and gloom exists when there’s no pushback.

Valid criticisms, like the Xbox needing more quantity are falling by the wayside when this nonsense takes over.

It’s just really hard to compare numbers nowadays with so many differing metrics.

Halo Infinite is the most played Halo game of all time by a wide gap, can MS sit there with a straight face and tell us that it had more impact than any of the Halo games that came before 343’s era ? Absolutely not.

It’s why I hate comparing retail games vs games that are available on subscription. It just doesn’t work. Not if you’re trying to discuss it in good faith.

But they’re not saying that. And we’re not comparing modern games to older games. The topic is ā€œXbox are making games that have no appealā€.

They need to counter the idea that Xbox games have no appeal when games like Sea of Thieves/Forza Horizon/Grounded are streamed more often, have more viewers, have more concurrent players, and have more players in general than many (if not all of) Nintendo and Sony games.

We can try to claim that these metrics mean nothing, but it’s that naivety (that we all had, not just you) that led to games like Roblox becoming a billion dollar franchise/company right under all of our notes.

Who needs to counter the idea though ? Xbox ? The Media ?

I’m rather fascinated by Halo Infinite at this point and would love a peak behind the curtain. It certainly is not the highs of the last Halos, but I’m really curious what sort of numbers its doing internally, its still chugging along rather surprisingly well (not as well as everyone hoped). Not to mention MS was clearly not happy with 343 post launch.

Anyway, I just find it interesting and would be really curious to know numbers at this point. Its hard to have a rational discussion about Halo Infinite though these days.
