Phil Spencer interview - Discusses Redfall disappointing, CMA, Hellblade II, quarterly releases, and more

Personally speaking I’ve never liked to engage in that kind of rhetoric, but sometimes it’s hard to argue otherwise.

I feel you.

To clarify I don’t actually think people vehemently hate Xbox.

I just think people like a punching bag and unfortunately Xbox is it for people.

I think it’s a bit cyclical as well. I vaguely remember PS fans were hot and bothered by all the radio silence from Sony leading up to the release of the PS5 until they finally talked about it, and even then people go nuts with the hate whenever a State of Play comes out and it’s less than what they expected. I really respect P3 for what he did in this interview and to be honest it renews my confidence in Xbox.

I never understood the concept of buying a product based off of a promise, but to each their own. As for me, I purchased the Series X because of Game Pass, the ecosystem and it’s excellent backwards compatibility. I didn’t purchase my Series X to play Perfect Dark or Elder Scrolls VI years down the road.

Throughout the years of gaming, I have always made my decisions based on what was available, not what was coming.

  • Xbox 360: Dead Rising, Call of Duty 3, Ghost Recon: AW
  • PS3: Uncharted 1 & 2 and Killzone 2
  • PS4: Killzone: Shadow Fall, Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • Xbox One: Forza Motorsport 5, Dead Rising 3 and Halo MCC

One thing you will notice from my list is that the second console is almost, always purchased because of the exclusives.

I also think Xbox to many stands for a radical change from the norm. The subscription model for example could become the norm in the future and for some that means the “Buy to own” model might disappear, and some also believe it leads to cheaper or double A games comparing this to Tv streaming like Netflix, Disney, HBO and others. Then there is also reviews. There is a good chance reviews become less important when the content is available to everyone especially when the service has its own review page like Steam. I just think Xbox’s success renders a lot of this media mute if not useless and unneeded unless they adapt.

I think the hate other devs are pointing at Arkane is disgusting, really says something about the state of the industry. They need to be called out for their attitude.

I really hope the team patch and update the game to an amazing level, just to shut people up.

Those people don’t seem to understand that Microsoft wants to have you subbed and keep buying games. Because it’s literally the best of both worlds for them.

This is definitely a possibility.

Thought it was a good interview. One thing I would have asked Phil is if he had played Redfall prior to release and what he thought of it.

Overall I think Phil is correct in his assessment of the situation, though he probably shouldn’t have said anything. He is being taken out of context everywhere, and not in a good way.

I think he was quite clear. It’s anyone who tries to make console wars who purposely misinterprets what he said

There’s always going to be people who take you out of context

They are either console warriors or lack severe auditory comprehension, either way it’s not worth worrying about

Turn on the Xbox - > go to gamepass tab - > enjoy. This what I do daily, and honestly I’m freaking overhelmed with the amount of quality games is on my play list. I must be very wrong, but I really thought gaming was about having fun and not about this freaking nonsense endless cycle of internet bullcrap. If only I had more time to play…and you know what? Redfall may not have reached “standards that fans expected” ,but im still having fun with it. So, screw the Internet.

Yeah, by the time I get to Redfall it’ll probably have it’s patches because I am still playing through Persona 4, then Ghostwire Tokyo, then plenty of other games to play.

I feel bad for people that aren’t entertained.

Phil seemed like he understands where Xbox is, and what the issues are today. Thats good to have a leader that had clearly listened. What was better was when he basically said dont listen to me until im putting out great games. That means he knows that he needs to act and something needs to or needed to change.

Im encouraged.

I think Xbox marketing has to take some responsibility for this doom and gloom stuff.

A month ago I was about to buy a PS5 and GT7, but I bought a Series X Forza Horizon 5 bundle instead. What changed my mind was the FH5 Rally Adventure DLC.

The gaming media (and subsequently gamers) define First Party output as strictly releases. Xbox needs to open up their marketing to celebrate wins on all high quality output.

Where are the ads for Halo Infinite Season 3? The game is incredible at this point and yet MS is still allowing the gaming media to define that product by its launch.

Sea of Thieves and Grounded are still delivering great experiences with additional content added this year.

The gaming media is old-fashioned and need to see DLC expansions in their own boxes to consider them standalone titles. God of War 2 and Miles Morales are good examples of this.

Everyone at Xbox from Phil to the Xbox marketing teams need to define things themselves and not let legacy gaming media define the market.

I don’t mean to distract from the issues of Redfall. There are definitely lessons to be learned from that and I think it needs to be considered a problem that Xbox first party has to address.

But when it comes to this doom and gloom stuff, a lot of it is based on ignoring first party output over the last year because it seems to be defined as strictly being releases and not content.

The other thing is that there needs to be the recognition from Xbox (which the gaming media will pick up on) that Xbox releases high quality live service titles that their competition doesn’t have. Nintendo doesn’t have anything like a Sea of Thieves. Neither does Sony. People talk a lot about a cinematic narrative experience, but what is clear is that millions of people around the world equally care for cooperative or competitive social experiences, something Xbox First Party excels at.

I realize at this post is focusing a lot on marketing but I truly believe it would address a lot of this doom and gloom nonsense. This is one area that I wish the interview went into, the fact that there are a lot of wins over the last year despite 2022 being as slow as it was…but the fact that Xbox hasn’t really pushed these wins or brought attention to them.

You definitely hit the nail on the bed here and people have been saying it a lot, Xbox doesn’t showcase its stuff in ads as much as Nintendo and Sony, and I remember seeing spendings on publicity for all 3 console makers and Xbox was really far behind. With all the money they are spending on content you wonder why they are not putting the word out there.

The Dev showcase earlier this year was good and so will the Xbox and Bethesda showcase in June, but Xbox needs to be on billboards and on big sports events worldwide as word of mouth JSR isn’t doing it enough for them.

Heck they should be doing more of the joint marketing with surface like they did before with Halo. That was really smart, 1 expenditure, 2 products marketed. If they don’t do that with Starfield they are really just clueless (on the marketing side).

Sorry I didn’t make myself more clear but I’m talking about marketing previously released games especially when games come out of beta or new DLC is announced.

Grounded came out of beta last Fall and should have been marketed as a big Fall release. While gaming media might deride it as something simply coming out of beta, 75% of the gaming audience is probably unaware of that.

Forza Horizon 5 Rally Adventure could use TV or movie advertisements to sell the DLC, the game itself, and the consoles.

My point is that Xbox needs to make a big deal about this content. First party content is still first party content and the idea that it needs to be a boxed release is archaic.

Break free of the shackles that gaming media (a dated institution that only represents console gaming, an ever shrinking fraction of the overall videogame market) has imposed.

Redefine gaming outside their narrow-mindedness that was completely unaware of the fact that a gaming IP like Roblox became worth billions of dollars right under their noses simply because it wasn’t available on the PS4.

They need to talk up their live content as much as EA, Activision, and Epic do when they point to Apex, Warzone, & Fortnite. People don’t care for Halo Infinite? Just like how people avoided Fortnite for years until they decided to install it during Chapter 2 Season 4 and have been playing it ever since? Or the ones that tried it back in 2017 and didn’t like building but came back last year with no-build? Infinite today is nothing like how it was at launch, time to flex that. Recognize that it now offers more for everyone.

My point is that this idea that Xbox has been doing nothing with First Party content is garbage, and that much of this misinformation is on Xbox themselves by not challenging it.

Halo Infinite Season 4 should be made a spectacle at their “E3” showing. Don’t let its launch define its legacy. If Forge supports Enemy AI, make a huge deal about it and sell the idea of endless single player and co-op content. Write headlines like “Halo Infinite has finally arrived” instead of being scared to bring up something the gaming media and fanboys have labeled a flop.

Sorry for the rant lol, not directed at you my friend.

Feel like they’ve been teasing this show far more than any other in recent memory, they must be very confident in this one.
