Movies and TV shows thread

Life of Pi (2012) - Visual masterpiece with a pretty good story. I think one of the more interesting components of the movie is that it doesn’t push itself fully towards an unrealistic territory (outside the wacky premise). It still feels relatively nuanced in how it treats its story.

The Big Lebowski (1996) - The best way to describe this comedy would probably be to think of it as literally a dream you live through awakened. It can be very endearing at times though, just a group of friends having ups and down but, no matter what, always going back, to hanging out together at a bowling center table.

Pride and Prejudice (2005) - Pretty freaking good drama. As far as performances go, this is Keira Knightley’s all-time performance, Rosamund Pike has an aura, and Donald Sutherland is just a joy to watch.

I saw that Disney has the Alien movies and they are in 4K. It’s always a good time to watch a classic and this one sure remains one, it’s timeless.

The build up to things, the mystery, the locations and lighting, the music, it atmosphere, so many years later and it has aged so incredibly well.

I hope so much that the new one will be good.

I could never get into the Alien films, I have always been more of a Predator fan.

I’ll have to give them another go.

I was always a predator stan. As I got older that flip flopped. Alien and Aliens are just too good. The original predator still amazing and a personal favorite though. And I like Predator 2 much more than most.

Alien Romulus was pretty damn good.

Top Gun (1986) - Has some pretty great scenes, though it’s rather straightforward.

DragonHeart (1996) - This is magical, quite transportative, despite the CGI aging a little bit.

House of Flying Daggers (2004) - Beautiful vistas meshed with a tragic story. What happens when you try to mesh personal love with communal hate. So much objectification though.

Rand said on the xbox era podcast that he started watching From, the sci horror. Im adamant he will lose interest in season 2, it falls of a cliff. Becomes horrific. No plot, bad acting, constantly shows people walking around starting random conversations. Horrendous after season 1’s hook.

Started with 1899 earlier this week and I just finished it. Man, how I wish this was something else.

I loved the setting, the interesting and diverse cast of characters and the mystery. I think I was truly invested with the first 5 episodes or so, until we got the scene where some goes into a hatch and crawls outside and finds themself on an island.

It wasn’t revealed to be a simulation just yet but it already had lost me there. I was so hoping this would be a more realistic mystery story, I guess. Just didn’t like this twist at all. So I did finish it, but with each episode after that I got less and less interested. A shame. Anyone else feel the same way?

Watched the psycholical space thriller Slingshot today. Not a very great review number on IMDB and yet I thoroughly enjoyed it. Reviews really aren’t always the end all be all, definitely not.

And just now I got back from the theater and saw the movie Strange Darling. Loved it. Thriller is what I’d call this, even though IMDB says horror too. Do not watch any trailer because this IS the kind of movie a trailer could easily spoil way too much of. That goes for Slingshot too.

Willa Fitzgerald which is known from Scream the show, Reacher show, The fall of the house of Usher and more is amazing in her role here.

I agree, definitely a thriller over a horror. Without getting into spoiler territory (for everyone else), there were quite a few parts I found disappointing but the overall premise was good.

Last week I finally properly started with the show called Dark.

It’s quite interesting, but it had not wowed or shocked me just yet. Nearing the end of the first season now and…holy shit.

Episode 8 where Ulrich goes to the 50s, he meets young Helge of which he’s convinced has murdered not only his brother, but also his son. I’m not so sure yet Helge is guilty at all, and certainly not of his son because we know he is alive.

But then the scene where Ulrich chases after young Helge and then actually kills him with the rock? I sat on my couch with my mouth wide open, flabbergasted. I totally expected he wouldn’t go through with even hitting him once.

At first I wasn’t too big on the whole time travel thing but it’s absolutely growing on me now. I do often have to look up the names of these characters, it can be confusing. I remember someone here said that before a while ago.

I really enjoyed Dark, if you like it I’d recommend The Rain too.

Gonna finish all seasons of Dark first, and then I might restart with The Rain, because I know for sure I watched S1 a few years ago, but I don’t think I’ve seen all seasons.

Man, all these great shows keep me from gaming though. As my father used to say…you need a second life to be able to entertain all of this.

I typically find myself going through different stages, for a few months I will go heavy on TV/Movies, then games and then I’ll get back into my family history and repeat .

It’s the same with music too, I’ll typically go Heavy Metal in winter, then Metal/Heavy Rock in Spring and then Indie in summer .

Halloween II (2009) might be one of the worst movies I’ve ever tried to watch. I say try because I turned it off after 20 minutes.

Since it’s October I decided to watch all of the Halloween films in order and while some of them aren’t necessarily great after the first film, they’re at least somewhat competent for the most part. Then Rob Zombie was given the reigns to the franchise and made a terrible remake of the first film and proved that not only is he a shit director, but that he simply didn’t understand or even try to understand what made the series special in the first place. Essentially he turned Michael Meyers into Jason and infused the movie with some of the most over the top, awful characters I’ve ever seen.

Considering that, my bar for Rob Zombie’s sequel to Halloween was incredibly low and yet he somehow managed to make a film so, so much worse.

Mini diatribe over, I just had to vent that out because the movie was just so terrible.

Very good, it’s probably up there for me with the first one. Enough memorable scenes, great acting by the lead actress and it actually had me slightly puzzled on something, whereas the first one was pretty crystal clear. So glad I didn’t watch any trailers, been doing that more and more lately. Just completely avoiding trailers (unless they are shown in the theater before a movie) because I hate how some trailers show way too much.

This is a good ass year for horror, Longlegs was great, although that’s probably more psychological thriller. I look forward to Terrifier 3 too.

I recently watched Die Alone which was actually much better than I expected. Because of this I’m now I’m on a zombie watching spree.

Does anyone have any suggestions (preferably from the 2000’s onwards)?

I am gradually making my way through this list (I have seen them all previously):

  • Shaun of the Dead
  • Cargo
  • 28 Days/Weeks Later
  • World War Z
  • Train to Busan
  • Zombieland
  • #Alive
  • Dead Snow

I am not sure I know Die Alone. I’m gonna check that if I haven’t yet.

It’s not a movie but the shows Znation and Black Summer I quite enjoyed. I’m now in the theater where Terrifier 3 is gonna begin in a half hour from now.
