Movies and TV shows thread

The show Mayor of Kingstown is damn good. Story wise this is different, it’s something new and Jeremy Renner is great!

We really couldn’t get into Season 1 so haven’t watched subsequent seasons, does it get better?

I’m only 4 eps in, haha. But I’m digging it all the way.

Man oh man, i feel like The quiet place movie series jist fell off a cliff. The new one is a shocker, and i loved the first two. Felt forced, rushed… one of the worst things for me in this is making eveeyone so stupid, no one at any time thinks to throw something, an object etc, to distract and deter the creatures. Its so obvious on many occasions, its like they avoided this because it would require some thought and innovation.

Totally aside, when will the onslaught of agenda driven super hero movies end, its mind numbing. Its acknowledged they dont make money and anyone who isnt a biased fan acknowledges how bad most of them are. Nothing is new or unique anymore, its a look what i can do with my powers from start to end, what happened to anticipation and build up for a ‘return on investment’ story line, payback is what a story teller calls it.

Just got back from it and I absolutely loved it. This is what I want to see from Marvel. I am so glad they didn’t fuck this one up. I legit had tears from laughter at some points and the cameos were awesome.

I love how it makes fun of itself and the MCU, it’s very self aware, if that’s the right word for it. Awesome.

Absolutely, it was definitely my type of humour :joy:.

We even had a round of applause in our screening, it’s rare you hear that these days.

I hope it does well financially as the budget must have been huge this time around. Also I still want to see Wolverine Vs Hulk (yes I know we briefly saw Hulk )

Twisters was decent. Solid 3/5 from me. Seems like Hollywood is really pushing Glenn Powell as the Tom Cruise successor ? Not in how they make movies or anything but that certain Hollywood star quality that stars are lacking today.

Really hoping that new Aliens movie saves the summer for me in terms of movie experiences, mediocre July so far.

One question though about something in the story…

The back story of the “worst” Wolverine, basically the X-men dying. Did we ever see this in a movie or was it in the comics? They didn’t show it, so I’m guessing it’s been shown already? It’s been a long time that I watched those movies but I don’t recall it.

I think the closest we have seen to that in the films is the beginning of Logan where most if not all the mutants are now dead due to Xavier. However this is a completely different Wolverine as he still has his regeneration and is younger, therefore is a version we haven’t seen in the films (we see Deadpool visiting lots of different versions of Earth to find a new Wolverine including one which is played by Henry Cavill).

In the comics there’s loads of different scenarios where this happens including Deadpool killing the entire Marvel universe.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) - This gorgeous movie is as visually dense as it is in narrative depth, a lot of themes are explored there (be it the tangibility of feelings and of this world, and the promotion of self-honesty, with one of the main storylines ending in tragedy because of it being neglected (and tbf, really the ending to the other main storyline is open-ended at best and bitter at worst)). It’s a lot about regrets too (Jade Fox feeling like they’ve been held back from rising spiritually for a decade because of a deceitful little child, Shu Lien wanting Jen to live a life she won’t regret unlike her).

Good Will Hunting (1997) - Matt Damon and Robin Williams were real highlights in terms of performance in this flick about mental health. Now let me put this straight. The screenplay is amazing, this movie is on some stuff, this is cinema, may I even say, kino.

The Edge (1997) - It’s a nice little survival movie with a cool third act and Hopkins shines like a bright sun, Charles is a pretty great character - that final quote from Charles (Anthony Hopkins) still intrigues me though, no your “friends” did not die saving your life! Also, if I had a nickel for every movie featuring Anthony Hopkins being the subject of cheating, I would have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

You are posting movies here lately that I’ve known about such as Good will Hunting and for some reason never watched them. I’ll go do that soon! Because they sound really good.

Just saw Deadpool and Wolverine and wow!!! I am blown away at how the trailers are far better than the movie. Such a disappointment

I thought DaW was an exceptionally great time.

Alien (1979) - Stressful? Yes. Beautiful? Yes, Sir Ridley at the peak of his art with visuals. Compelling? Yes, Sigourney Weaver is a really talented actress (honestly that’s the case for a few actors in this movie).

Aliens (1986). As expected, way more action-y than the original, with a focus on three recurrent components of Cameron’s work: mothers, children and machines (to wonderful effect).
