Microsoft needs a comprehensive Japan strategy. Now is the time to strike. Suggest your strategies

I still think Xbox should put a ring on Platinum’s finger.

Agreed

More like a leash and send their agents to control their development times :joy: I mean if they clean Platinum Games, make them work on a single game at time, they might be a good get.

Do they still develop Bayonetta 3 BTW?

Yup. They recently showed gameplay two Directs ago.

I see. The thing that it feels like Bayonetta 3 has been in development for ages already.

Dream scenario , they acquire Platinum Games, Cyber Connect, Groundling Inc and JP games and put them under a “Xbox Studios Japan” publishing arm. They put out Overwatch spin off action game staring Genji that is a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Rising Reveangence.

The more I think about it the more a studio like Platinum makes a lot of sense for Xbox

  1. When it comes to Japan, beggers cant be choosers, Xbox need to get what they can

  2. Platinum are a studio that havnt exactly been swimming in money from huge hits they’ve made, the fact they’ve talked about moving to more live service type games suggests to me their current set up isn’t very sustainable

  3. Platinum to me are a little like Double Fine, a smaller team but very creative but havn’t had the level of support needed to take them to the next level

  4. Xbox could really do with more action focused titles, people have fond memories of the Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 days so having things like that for gamepass would be great for the platform

  5. They likely wouldn’t need 4-5 years to pump out games, I imagine being able to focus on 1-2 games at a time instead of spreading themselves thin like they seem to be these days they’d be able to pump games out for GP reguarly

  6. They would likely be pretty damn cheap, they have afaik, pretty much no IPs so you’d be buying them for talent and to get a good first step into the Japanese market and show other studios you’re serious about gaming over there

What exactly doee Platinum mean by independence?

Like they wabt to self publish and put games where they want while MS foots the bill? Thats a terrible deal

Now…if they want creative independencento make what they want, and self publish…but MS keeps the games exclusive to Xbox PC (maybe the occassional Switch port here and there) and obviously Game Pass day 1 then THAT is something I can get behind

The Bungie Sony deal is the ultimate loser deal…Sony takes the girl out, fancy restaurant, Gucci and Louie Vatton but she still sleeps around with others…that is a cuckold deal and MS needs to avoid at all cost

Platinum : you can buy us if you can respect our freedom .

Phil : ok sure . Buys them

Platinum : proceeds to make PS5 and switch exclusives .

Platinum ain’t ever getting a Bungie type deal if they’re bought by a console maker. Maybe if they had a super successful MP game or something to bargin with but as they are now the only freedom they could hope for under a console maker is the creative kind.

After reading the article, he’s talking about making the games they want to make, nothing about other platforms

and the Sony/Bungie deal isn’t really a bad deal, at least not for what Sony is going for, they aren’t buying them for killer exclusives but to create something with the Fortnite effect, make something so big that you make far more money having it everywhere than stuck on your Playstation

Will they be able to achieve that? Doubtful but they will still make good money from Destiny and future IP

Platinum aren’t in the same position though

The interview is right there to read guys. He doesn’t say that means staying multiplat, he says he means “being allowed to still make the games we want to make” which is exactly what MS does anyway

He says " I don’t think Microsoft will start micromanaging Activision’s game development… This is the kind of freedom we want too".

It sounds to me like Microsoft is what they’re hoping for

Phil Spencer is on his way to Platinum Games

I don’t see what else they would want…I get that devs want their games to be played by as many people as possible but MS already has the widest array of platforms you can play games on.

That’s why Thomas Mahler is a whiny little bitch …MS even let Moon put Ori, an IP MS owns, on Switch but that wasn’t enough, on every platform except Playstation but still not enough

Platinum has no issue making exclusive games for Nintendo…so if Phil said “you can have creative freedom but the games are only on platforms with Game Pass” Platinum would have to be dumb as hell to not take that deal

Exactly which is why I believe that if MS offered them the standard deal, you can make what you want but we own the games and put them where we want, that Platinum would be dumb as hell not to take it considering they had to literally kickstart the Wonderful 101 port.

Plus since they don’t have their own IP’s MS could get them on the cheap and their games would be perfect for Game Pass and to break into Japan

Yeah I see it as a win win

It’d be a huge win for Microsoft regarding Japan if Shinji, Kamiya and Kojima all make games under Xbox, they all turn out to be good games and they all have good things to say about Microsoft…we already know Shinji has been very positive regarding Xbox

Platinum wants that moolah. They see MS got that checkbook out and they want some of that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they accepted if MS wants them.

I disagree with that. Especially after ATVI. Microsoft literally spent more money that all japanese game publishers market caps combined. Literally whole Nintendo size amount of money. With ATVI Microsoft won’t be competing with just Sony or Nintendo anymore.

Basically the same as other Microsoft studios - develop games for Game Pass and PC. Maybe some their own IP or maybe Scalebound.

Bungie had a lot of leverage over Sony. With Microsoft and ATVI, Sony had no choice.
