Microsoft in talks with Discord over $10 billion+ acquisition

50 billion for Tik Tok had little to do with Xbox.

I know but definitely they will use that money on something, so hopefully they don’t forget Xbox.

Hahaha this one is good lol

It’s over inflated. Discord could easily be the next MySpace.

It might it might not.

I believe they are building out Teams for a better social focus, for friends and families. I don’t know how far along they are with that or how extensive their changes are. I could see them swap Xbox Network Functionality over to using Teams on the backend for all the texting and chatting and sharing of pics and videos. The users wouldn’t know it was really Teams unless they push the “powered by Teams” aspect.

Discord is already entrenched in various communities. Teams is nowhere near there. On each website basically you can find Patreon and Discord lol

If this happens, I think the most important thing MS could do is not rock the boat to much. Currently there isn’t much of anything in the way of a immediate competitor for discord. I think leaving it mostly as is while sprinkling in some xbox integration would be the right path forward.

This for 3 reasons. 1. It fits their current business model and not just for the gaming side of things. Discord can be used for office meetings and works better than teams. I have a lot of college students employed right now and they all complain about teams and a lot of them would rather use discord. 2. It’s the cheapest it will ever be. 3. Better grab it before a competitor does.

Over 200m users already on Discord. Not to be underestimated. Whether MS buys it or not.

Agree. And they’re just like MySpace and AOL at that time or any of the lengthy line of now failed or mostly forgotten sites… I’m not questioning their reach, I’m questioning the staying power and the commercial value.

It wouldn’t affect it, MS has more than 100 billion in cash reserves and make billions per quarter. They already made the amount of the Bethesda acquisition back.

Gaming is a pillar for MS, if Discord is available, they will 100% outbid anyone for it.

They can do that with Discord purchase anyway. You have to remember that they wanted to spend 50+ bil this year.

acquiring Discord would make MS/Xbox the most dominant platform for gaming. They own the biggest collection of first party studios and then would own most of comms for gaming.

Discord would not be only for Xbox, but MS as a whole, especially with Azure, since Discord is using Google Cloud right now.

I think people are associating discord too much with xbox when this would be for the benefit of all its verticals particularly the business operations sector.

Discord is primarily used for gaming communities. Trying to leverage it for other businesses within MS is exactly the path they should take if they want it to end up like Skype.

MS has teams for the other areas of its business.

Stop being realistic!

Discord integration on Xbox would be pretty cool.
