Microsoft backtracks Xbox Live Gold price hike, also ends membership requirement for Free-to-Play Games [2021-01-22]

But it’s the wrong way to do it, all it does is remind everyone of the corpo shit that MS actually is. We fans kind of forget that at times.

The end goal is to reach a big, really big number by the end of the year for Game Pass Ultimate. There is no other reason behind this decision.

Them buying Bethesda for 7.5B should’ve reminded you about corpo MS, it is the wrong way for sure but it could turn out a massive boon for the comapny so who knows, but yeah this is bit of a PR hit.

In the long run, this move will kill Xbox live Gold, it’s a weird way to do it, but I kind of feel it will be the best way for them to have a big win in the end, make sure people hate Gold to jump on Ultimate and then kill MP paywall and they will finally be parity between mobile / PC / console users.

You CAN love the xbox brand while also calling out trash decisions and bad performance.

weird but super profitable haha, I’m sure people will continue to pay their monthly fee and are ok with it. But I agree, I feel like once GP hits XXm users they will drop it and with them doing this now maybe they can drop it even faster. I wonder if the PR hit would be worth it for them to just remove gold in a year or 2. Again I doubt this will do much at all with sales and that, I don’t honestly think people are going to sell their consoles in droves after this despite people saying it online.

This is going to tempt Sony to up their price it will be interesting to see if they follow suit, they probably won’t get any where near the backlash but get some free extra cash.

I agree but you can also be rational too, some people have gone a bit far.

Just putting this into perspective:

  • Switch: $300 + $20 per year to play online multiplat games, free F2P.
  • Xbox Series S: $300 + $120 per year to play online multiplat games, F2P doesn’t really exist, sub required.
  • PS5 Digital: $400 + $60 per year to plat online multiplat games, F2P is free.
  • PS5 Disc: $500 + $60 per year to play online multiplat games, F2P is free.
  • Xbox Series X: $500 +$120 per year to play online multiplat games, F2P doesn’t exist, sub required.

This is a shit deal, full stop. Sure it’s seemingly a push for Game Pass Ultimate, but the ask is double the price for online multiplayer and then if you feel like you’re being pushed to Game Pass Ultimate, "hey, maybe consider paying triple the ask!!

This is stupidly heavy handed.

I’m with Ybarra on this one. Online MP being free should’ve been the move, this just makes Xbox look like a terrible deal (unless you want GPU).

MS must be dreaming if they think I’m going to pay £100+ per year for the occasional bit of online play I do. If I move across to PS I can play f2p online stuff with no subscription whatsoever!

MS have seriously taken the piss with this move. I wish I hadn’t bought an SX at this moment in time! That’s how disgusted I am with this.

Still, on a positive note at least there are other options for gaming other than Xbox.

How did we miss this?!

Or

Xbox Series X: $500 + $180 (GP:U) per year to play online multiplat games, get 1st party games from 23 sutdios day 1, xCloud game streaming on all your devices and Game Pass for PC

What you said is a shit deal but what you’re missing is still the best deal in gaming, I know again the optics is bad but they’re pushing people into a good deal not something way worse.

Lets not use game pass to soften this terrible move.

I think they should scrap gold and have seperate tiers.

Gamepass tier one $5/month acess to 2 games/month which are at least a year old in gamepass games and online multiplayer

Tier 2 $10/month - access to full gamepass libary apart from day 1 releases and no xcloud access or ea play.

Tier 3 $15/month same as game pass ultimate

Or something like that.

They really destroyed the “best deal in gaming” advert tag as well. Because they will now easily have the “worst deal in gaming” reputation alongside it.

Hey that’s actually a good idea. Game Pass Arcade, Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate.

This way they could also feed the games with gold into the game pass sub. Thats genius actually

We need LESS SUBS.

Silver

Gold

Game Pass

Game Pass Ultimate

This reeks of 2013 Xbox
