Microsoft backtracks Xbox Live Gold price hike, also ends membership requirement for Free-to-Play Games [2021-01-22]

Some of ya’ll are being dramatic as hell in this thread lol

I didn’t miss anything though, I’ve said GPU is great if you’re looking to play all or most of those games, agreed, amazing deal.

But not everyone is looking to play those games.

Some people buy a console so their kids can just play Roblox, Fortnite and Minecraft. Some people buy a console and play literally nothing but CoD, Madden, Fifa, Destiny and GTA.

That is the vast majority of gamers. There is no need to throw up Game Pass as some shield for this shit move though, it’s bad full stop.

Yes, and what I proposed would reduce the amount to 3 subs.

The next narrative to die will have to be “if you play a lot of singleplayer games, go with playstation, but for multiplayer, go with Xbox”. Lmao

What kind of Don Mattrick shit is this?

This is exactly the sort of thing when I say some are being a bit dramatic lol, not even bloody close.

Just make F2P games online free and no one will care if you charge 15$ for gold when GPU exists.

This could’ve have been such an easy pill to swallow, but Xbox had to make hard for themselves.

I haven’t played Playstation in years, but back in the ps3 days there online service (stability, chat. etc) was trash. Don’t know how they are doing today.

as good as Xbox so no real difference anymore Id say and they dont paywall F2P or party chat.

EXACTLY!

Prediction: Next time Phil gives an interview will be after the Zenimax deal completes.

This pretty much hits the nail on the head!

I dont get why they are doing this, especially now with the pandemic, and when everyone is waiting for the first party game to come, why the hell would I buy an xbox over a playstation if I went to the store tomorrow? its either

  1. get the console with some awesome games that can only be played there, that has cheap online multiplayer, which is free for f2p games
  2. get the console with no (big) exclusive games, until like next year I guess, with a weak first party offering in the near term, which costs $120 just to play f2p games

Why the hell would I choose the console that I have to pay $120 per year just to wait for the good games to come when I can just go playstation and get that today?

They are destroying peoples good will with this move, I dont even care that this doesnt affect me, I have game pass ultimate.

It really feels like they just said, how do we juice the gamepass numbers? Oh i know make it gold even more expensive! without thinking for half a second what the wider implications to their image would be.

Microsoft is shit at consumer brand building, its like they have a rule in a spreadsheet somewhere that lights something up when certain conditions are met then they just do something without thinking.

Thr “trick” works only for people signing up to GPU for the first time unfortunately.

The trick still works, but it will cost 14.99 instead of 1.00

It was abysmal back then, trash is putting it nicely… coming from Xbox 360 and even OG Xbox, I was absolutely befuddled by how bad it was and how much of a mixed bag the online implementations were across multiple games, especially so with earlier released games.

These days though… experience-wise, it’s about the same as Xbox Live, any differences come down to the flavors of the OS, experience is the same.

So if you are already a GPU subscriber and buy 12 months of gold, for $14.99 all of those 12 months get converted to GPU? I was under the assumption that in that situation the 12 months of Gold get converted in a ratio of 1:4 or something like that.

In all honesty the only thing I’m worried about is if this can impact player bases on online games I know PlayStation has more players in general so I don’t like the idea of charging more and put some off playing online. Silly I know but that’s my reaction.

I won’t have a chance to write this anywhere else, so I will write it here.

This is frankly a gross move by Xbox. They’re doubling the price of Gold during a pandemic and continue to make players pay for Gold to play free to play games.

Continuing to charge people for multiplayer for starters is insane. Xbox is at the forefront of cross generation and cross platform gaming. Yet they still expect console players to pay 120 dollars a year to play multiplayer games while charging PC players absolutely nothing.

This move is simply greedy and makes Microsoft look greedy and incompetent. This move makes no sense, and they either need to reverse it, get rid of gold altogether, or finally make free to play games actually free.
