Microsoft-Activision-Blizzard Discussion Thread (Part 1)

pretty much sony still makes more gaming revenue than xbox does i know theres fanboy wars but people really hate the money hats sony does but this damn this is something else and i thought bethseda was massive but wow

Daniel Ives, a tech and media analyst at the US firm Wedbush, said that while a deal of such scale will naturally attract the attention of regulators, Microsoft will ultimately gain clearance as it is not under the same scrutiny and pressure as Silicon Valley rivals such as Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google.

“We expect this deal to ultimately clear regulators,” said Ives, in a note to investors. “However, there will be some inherent speed bumps navigating both the Beltway and Brussels on a tech deal of this size.”

Ives said that while Nadella has seen huge success driving Microsoft’s business-to-business offerings, such as the cloud division led by Azure and Office 365, this deal will help turbocharge its consumer strategy which has “been on a treadmill approach”.

“Acquiring Activision will help jump start Microsoft’s broader gaming endeavours and ultimately its move into the metaverse with gaming the first monetisation piece of the metaverse in our opinion,” he said. “With Activision’s stock under heavy pressure over the last few months, Microsoft viewed this as the window of opportunity to acquire a unique asset that can propel its consumer strategy forward.”

I agree. The issues surrounding Activision helped make this acquisition possible. It was a great opportunity that Xbox didn’t miss.

Even tho yes this is big for Xbox. It does barely anything for me, with the exception of toys for bob going back to their roots and doing mascot platforming. That said, I don’t think another publisher needs to be bought, but man I really, really, really wanted Sega. Obviously selfishly for myself because I enjoyed there games more. But I do understand why they did this, and that it is a positive for the platform

If Sony acquired SE, Capcom or Konami they will for sure lock it all down too, I have no doubts about that. I wonder if they’ll even honor any deals, maybe I’m wrong but I just have that hunch. Xbox at least keeps some stuff coming to other platforms.

Take 2 I don’t see happening.

For me I woke up, checked Gematsu as I usually do every morning for my daily gaming news, thinking “I wonder if they announced the Game Pass line up yet”, and just casually seeing “Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard” in the news feed… My half-asleep self didn’t even process it at first.

I agree, but I would go further and say that I actually think CoD (not Warzone, but CoD-proper) will be exclusive. Reason being that they already did the math on this kinda thing when thinking through the Bethesda deal and evidently the numbers landed on making the big guns exclusive as an investment in Game Pass. Yes, it means less sw revenue for the games themselves, but it also means huge numbers of new subscriptions which is worth more to them.

People here also need to take notice of the Metaverse stuff that is being attached to this deal. I still am not fully aware of what that even is supposed to mean nor am I sure I’m on board with any of it, but MS/Activision are all in on it so that is why this deal is not just a GP deal but rather is the whole hog.

Yeah, I’m in the exact same boat. The biggest benefit I see out of this is the toxic management hopefully getting pushed out. Outside of that, this deal is pretty meh for me.

Sega is very much a publisher that I would have preferred they pick up. Unlike ABK, Sega could use MS’ money, and it could have become the home base or Japanese branch for Xbox to help foster better support and relationships.

Unbelievable. The only positive I see is the culture could be changed and kotick is out.

I can see where you’re coming from. Personally I’m not the biggest CoD fan at all, but I always digged the campaigns, just not enough to buy them every year.

I’m especially hoping that these studios will go and make some really cool games that aren’t CoD. No way in hell does CoD need all of these studios.

Phil did say he wanted to do better with Japanese games and we’ve seen a nice improvement on Game Pass, but a actual real big publisher didn’t happen. Maybe they just weren’t open to selling to them? WB would have been more interesting for me personally as a gamer, especially if the licenses were to be included, but not sure of that ever would have happened.

In conclusion after this deal… Xbox got no games…

Hmmm from the Phil files, now we’re just waiting on Poland and Japan acquisitions.

Glad I’m not the only one meh with the deal. From a personal preference, WB or even EA would have me more interested.

This covers family and PC in a big way.

EDIT: And Casuals. AND Mobile!

Capcom or Square would have to want to sell though, that’s the thing. I could see Square, they’re practically a first party for Sony at this point any way. Capcom however, i doubt. Come to think about it, i see Japanese publishers siding more with Nintendo than Sony at this point.

This one was unexpected for me and the toxic work culture change is my favourite thing about this deal happening, But Call of Duty potentially having the creative freedom to do whatever it wants again is the best thing to happen for that franchise. It used to be loved but my god the past couple of years it has been through the shitter honestly

I understand those not keen on this deal if they’re only thinking of COD. My interest lies solely in the IP that was put to rest in order to feed COD. There is so much history and other titles that could be worked on that it’s exciting just thinking of the possibilities.

I saw “Microsoft” & “Activision” trending while I was scrolling down my twitter feed and was like “uh oh more drama” but nope, it was this :phil_lmao:

I’m more for the Blizzard side of the acquisition than the Activision side. Acti has a lot of great studios and puts them all on one IP. I still hold out hope that MS gets Sega some day.
