Last Call: Nintendo Switch 2 Hope/Expectations

The day is almost here. There are plenty of rumors out there, including $399.99 price tag, graphic to be like One X, and so on. The showcase reveal is set to be around 60 minutes presentation. So…

What are your expectations?

What do you hope to have, whether the chance is high or low?

Hopes -

New F Zero - 0% chance with Kart releasing. 3D Mario, or better yet, a 3D Donkey Kong. 80% chance I want and expect power that surprises most people. 100% chance I hope for hardly any news on re-released games - something lazy, dumb gamers seem enamored with. 2% chance I hope for added online experiences. I hope they don’t add to the NSO price - the only fair and reasonable price among consoles.

I’d be very surprised at a summer release.

I am excited about the event and expect as much buzz as I expect hand-wringing and bad takes from team blue.

edit: I have held off on MH Wilds in anticipation of tomorrow. I am hoping it released on this new system.

To be honest, hoping for a Switch 2 OLED bundle with Metroid Prime 4 packed in for $500. I am expecting Metroid Prime 4 to be cross-gen like BOTW was so the game I want to play the most should be there.

I can see a June release but im going with late September instead.

On the Microsoft front, people are expecting them to be there with a few games but I will make a somewhat different prediction - all of their games will be available at launch that have already been released and future games will be day one via the addition of Game Pass for Switch 2. $10 a month, Microsoft first party games for the most part with some third party games that aren’t available on Switch 1/2 but it’s all via Cloud Streaming. No digital/physical copies. Will be added to Game Pass Ultimate as an extra perk for those who are already or will be subscribed.

Square Enix will reveal the Final Fantasy IX remake for Switch 2 and be fully multi-platform including PS4 and Xbox One.

For Nintendo, Mario Kart 9 is the obvious pick but I will also say that they reveal Super Mario Odyssey 2 which launches in October/November. Nintendo will also talk about how backwards compatibility works, if there will be any free/paid Switch 2 upgrades for Switch 1 games or if we have to end up waiting for a fucking remaster of games that aren’t even a decade old yet.

Very much looking forward to the showcase tomorrow.

Hope: That there are 2-3 worthwhile games at launch. Thats what I require to justify bothering with a pre-order.

I am getting my Switch Backlog pretty much widdled down to nothing, so by the time launch comes around I should be in the clear.

Expectations: Nothing really. I expect people to be disappointed by its visual fidelity. Its going to be really nice for a handheld, but current consoles (that are five years old) are still well beyond it tehcnically. I expect Nintendo to work magic with it as usual.

What might convince me to buy it:

  • Larger 8-inch 1080p OLED screen
  • Upscaling of Switch games (DLSS, 4K, 60fps, AA)
  • Better online services
  • A true next-gen feel with a more powerful console and more ambitious Nintendo games

I don’t care about the price of the console as long as it meets my expectations. I’m happy it’s a Switch 2, but I hope to be pleasantly surprised by the presentation. I expect it to be released between June and September.

Regarding the games to be announced tomorrow:

  • Mario Kart X
  • Zelda: Oot Remake
  • Donkey Kong 2D
  • Fire Emblem Remake
  • Mario 3D
  • Star Fox Adventure Remake

A new Star Fox or Wave Race would make me go out of my way to get one.

If Metroid Prime 4 is a launch game, that might get me as well or a 3D Mario. If the big hitter for launch is Mario Kart. I can wait.

That would be boss but I think there is only room for one racer and that’s going to be Kart (sadly). I love Kart but 8 is so perfect it almost seems unnecessary.

New 3D Mario and I’ll be there day one

I’d be happy with a new DK as well

Im not too interested in Mario Kart. MK8 gave me brutal motion sickness in minutes. I loved what I played. But its the worst a game has ever made me feel playing it and it happens fast.

If MK gave you motion sickness wouldn’t Star Fox? Or any game involving airplanes or spaceships doing rolls?

Thats the weird thing. What causes it (at least when it comes to games) is inexplicable. I get really bad motion sickness pretty easily in the real world, but for the most part its pretty rare for me in games. But the games that do it mess me up something fierce.

Minecraft, and it will be a launch title. Sure, you could just use your Switch copy (with backwards compatibility), but you are paying for the “Switch 2” labelling.

wrong console.

As Jez Corden said, Minecraft is often seen to be treated by Nintendo as a first party game.

literally no one knows or cares who he is. and what does it even mean. Nintendo isn’t perfect, but they aren’t shitbags either.

what I meant was there is one company coming out with redos of 5 year old games and another company doing redos of 15 year old games.

also: Microsoft packages Minecraft not Nintendo. Both companies want to be in the fun business not the let’s make people angry business. Or they should be. MS seems to be learning that albeit slowly over eons.

That…makes zero sense. Jez Corden says the dumbest shit.

Ive been listening to some prediction podcasts from various insider types, Nate the Hate/MVG etc. Needless to say, if these predictions are any indication of reality, this will be the lamest announcement of all time.

Its basically broken down into a few themes:

  • Mario Kart and Metroid Prime 4
  • A bunch of old third party shit that you have been able to play better versions of for years.
  • Paid upgrades for Switch 1 games
  • Some NSO stuff
  • Hardware overview

I completely understand interest/excitement about what Nintendo might be doing with their new hardware, but are people really salivating over the prospect of playing a pared down port of Cyberpunk 2077 or Assassins Creed Mirage?

It is an hour long. It is going to be much more than that. My guess is 15-20 games. Hardware and NSO stuff and defo not paid upgrades to S1 games. No chance of that - zero. I’ll eat my hand if they do that.

They can just point to Microsoft’s12hour+ server outage and say “They pay $20 a month for that. Can you believe it?” cue sitcom laughtrack

Nate the Hate was talking about certain games, like BOTW being a paid upgrade, sony style. And Im just sitting here going…why does no one give MS credit for making most of those upgrades free.

Hoping to see new 3D Mario game, first teaser of new Zelda. The former is not impossible, highly, highly doubt the latter.

Hope it’s a great device for larger screens such as 65 inch in terms of picture quality, so hopefully upscaling works well for it.

Expecting Mario Kart and plenty third party too, during the Treehouses.

It’s almost here. What I think will happen is:

Xbox will show their games on Switch 2. Maybe Phil will make an appearance to show his excitement to launch titles on it.

Enhanced patch though likely charge us.

New Mario game but later in Fall.

What I hope to happen:

Achievement. These games with great collectibles beg for one.

Better online system.

Raw hardware power enhance Switch games.

Enjoy the show!
