The term gameplay is a bit misused.
It is hard to wake up, since any exclusivity can be lifted.
Xbox gamers are still thinking they will get some FF some day, and any new Square Game make them hope.
Works both way.
While I agree that this isn’t something only one group does, I also think we can say there’s a lot of difference between FF/ Square and Ori which Xbox owns, or OD which they’re helping provide /develop technology for it, especially since Square has come out and promised to do a better job bringing games to Xbox including in the FF series.
I’m wondering if OD is a super ARG- “Alternate Reality Game”, in the style of “The Sun Vanished” or “Local 58”, except in this case, you are the protagonist, not the observer.
He made some amazing Metal Gear Solid games, especially 1 and 3 in my opinion. 2 had some very strong stuff too. 4 and 5 didn’t manage to really grab me unfortunately.
He’s unique in how he does things, and he tries new things even if they might not exactly be ideal for a fun game, see Death Stranding for that. OD has potential, but as of right now it’s just too vague. He has some talented people on board for the horror aspect, but what will the gameplay consist of? And he said they will be doing things that haven’t been done before. That’s intriguing and scary at the same time, scary because it doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a success.
But he keeps trying new things and I have respect for that. I just hope if he goes too far with stuff that someone reigns him in a little. That probably won’t be Xbox since they are in full support of creative freedom. But Death Stranding in my opinion showed that someone better had said to Kojima “let’s not go overboard here. Where is the fun?” and maybe that happened and Kojima thought…nah.
I don’t particularly like Kojima’s games, but something I will give him is that to my knowledge he never made the same game twice. He’s always innovating and reinventing even in the same IP. That said I only came close to really liking one of his games, MGS5, but even that I disliked many aspects to and my impression was mixed.
I enjoyed Snatcher and MGS on the PS1 was an utter masterpiece the rest of his games I can’t get into.
