Killer Instinct (2013) is getting a Series X|S and Balance Update Patch "this fall"

This is some of the best info I’ve seen in a while.

The fact that Killer Instinct was even allowed at Evo is dope. Glad MS capitalized off the opportunity.

An update patch just means a KI 2 is coming sooner or later. I love it as Killer Instinct doesn’t get as much recognition as it deserves as a building block for the current FGC.

This is awesome news! I still play KI from time to time, so this is a welcome update. I’m curious what they’ll improve on current consoles.

You’re right that the HUD is still 1080p but the console versions already match the PC maxed settings for the most part. The only improvement PC had over the XBO was in texture filtering but that should be fixed when playing on the Series X, which should already match a PC setting all the highest settings.

Outside of updating the HUD, I wonder what else they’ll do. If anything this should at least lead to a proper sequel. I’d be surprised if they made a deal with the devs just for an update.

Considering some of the other fighting games like Sam Shodown got 120fps updates for next Gen I’m hoping we get the same for KI.

I am pretty sure that I tried KI just 3 months ago when I still had a Series S and don’t ask me about figures but the game looked fugly compared PC. On SX im happy.

I missed the Xbox One era so am more that happy with a refurbished KI. It still looks pretty decent in my opinion. Fighting games age well as long as they are being looked after like KI now

This update will benifit series s the most. Hopefully they improve textures and lighting too

I just thought I’d mention it here because it’s FGC related, but apparently PS5s at EVO were so hot that they were melting USB connectors on people’s sticks and some are suggesting they move to PCs or Xbox lol. Moving to Series S honestly would be cheap for them to do, unless the game has better performance on Series X then that might make sense but fighting games are usually locked framerate wise as you need that on a competitive level so I’m guessing all versions (S and X) run the same.

One thing I’ve always wondered was why none of these tournaments used USB extension cables.

This way no one has to go near the console, issues like the one you mentioned wouldn’t harm their sticks, and other accidents are prevented because the console is situated far from the players.

We used to have local tournaments here for Street Fighter 4 and they were on the Xbox 360. They were the newer slim models that had a capacitive on / off button, and the USB connectors were right beside that. So every time people plugged and unplugged their sticks, the console would be turned off. Obviously it was bad console design but it could have been prevented with USB extension cables. I used to work part-time at Best Buy for the discount and these $15 cables would be $2 for me, I’m sure one could find someone to hook them up if they ran one of these tourneys.

Or, y’know, Evo could spend $30 for a pair on each machine.

And in this case the overheating would have simply damaged these cables, with the arcade sticks remaining safe.

I have them in the box of my sticks, gives me extra cable for situations where I’m hooking the 360 up to a projector at a party if need be.

Xbox/PC does have better input lag than PS, so that would help as well.
