JRPGs |OT| The Grind to Level 99 is Paved With Good Intentions

Definitely wouldn’t recommend GfN normally, but it’s the best way to play Genshin on Android (and occasionally it works on Xbox through Edge too)

Like all things, it’s hampered by a middling games catalogue. Activision Blizzard actually removed all their titles from the service a few years ago and Square Enix - in moves that should shock nobody - have repeatedly rebuffed attempts to get their big titles on there.

In general I think the ship has sailed on it. Another reason the CMA are so woefully out of touch when it comes to the facts on the ground of cloud gaming

That’s usually the fault of the publisher more than it’s Nvidia’s, but it does but a pretty big damper on the service.

My favorite Ys game gets a physical release on Switch? Of COURSE I had to get it . I threw Nayuta no Kiseki into my order too. NISA is releasing the English version later this year, but I wanted to try my skill at another Trails game in Japanese. Nayuta was really cheap too, only about 30 CAD. I’m not sure if this Ys Oath in Felghana port will get an English release, because XSeed holds the Western rights to it, and they’ve not had a relationship with Falcom in years. The game is available on Steam in English, at least, although this Switch version has some exclusive enhancements.

As a pre-order bonus, a soundtrack set was included. Ys soundtrack on CD? Yes please.

Amid the glut of Square Enix published games last year - most of which ended up being pretty mid for the most part - Harvestella flew well under my radar.

Steam sales to the rescue, the game is an underappreciated gem. It’s much closer to traditional “old school” JRPG than anything, but it feels like a mismash of Atelier, Harvest Moon, Rune Factory and Persona and I never knew I wanted a game like this.

Just a really chill and cosy experience and I must admit Go Shiina deserves a lot of credit for that. If not his best score then only behind Tales of Legendia IMO.

Perfect game for GP, just as Stardew was, hopefully Phil can hammer something out with SE seeing as their Sony masters apparently don’t care about it.

Why with SE ? Microsoft should just talk to Marvelous. Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is coming to Xbox so releasing it straight to Game Pass would be nice. Rune Factory 5 is for now Switch exclusive. Highly likely that it’s just timed.

Because I want Harvestella on the service, not those games?

I don’t mind HM and Rune Factory, but they are farming/life sims first with some JRPG elements, Harvestella (so far, I’m about 50 hours in) is more a JRPG with some farming/life sim elements.

I’ll take them all, though.

It’s a pretty cool unique game. Combat didn’t really ever jive with me though. I did put 70 hours into it and finished it though. Was a 7/10 for me.

Rune Factory 5 is on PC now and 3 Special is coming. When Rune Factory 4 Special came to PC it was alongside the PS and Xbox versions, so I think RF5 and 3S might stay Switch/PC. Marvelous is yet to try GP out on anything though, should give it a shot if they’re skeptical on these games.

As for me I’m nearing the end of Ys Oath in Felghana on Switch. This is just such a fun game to revisit. First played it on Steam in 2020. It’s like the best of Ys and Falcom action games condensed into a tight 12 hour package. Again, of the 3 Ys games on this engine, this one excels the most, with great area variety, fun maneuverability, a very solid soundtrack… So fun to replay. If it dropped on Game Pass tomorrow I’d immediately replay it again lol.

The new Switch features are cool. I like the new portraits (old ones are selectable) and High Speed Mode are good when you need to grind an extra level up before a boss.

I’ve been following the story/dialogue along well (it’s only in Japanese), only have trouble with some of the villains dialogues lol. I’m even doing the side quests and optional NPC dialogues too

English dub doesn’t sound too good.

I hope we see Eiyuden Release date soon.

Phew, I’m done with the digital crack that is Ys Oath in Felghana now. Did my first playthrough on Hard difficulty, final boss fight took a lot of attempts, still one of my favorite Ys bosses though.

Since this version of the game has a New Game + feature (the PC version does not), I immediately started a new game on the Inferno (highest) difficulty. It was really fun to just blow through the game in like 2 hours with the High Speed mode lol

I also took on the boss rush. You can unlock images of Elena cosplaying as various Ys heroines. The one for the Inferno Boss Rush is actually her dressed as Carja from the upcoming Ys X, so that’s a fun little tease/reminder

I still have about 50% more Museum images to unlock, but those require me to play through the story on Very Easy, Easy, Normal, and Nightmare, separately. I’m not looking to burn out so maybe someday if I feel like it I’ll pop this game back in and bang out another speedrun playthrough.

Was really fun to revisit this game, now bring on Ys X!

I don’t know why but I thought this was supposed to release Spring of this year. I was probably thinking of something else. Their website says they took a break for Golden Week in Japan and will release a development update in June.

Murayama’s Monthly Development Report

We are deep in the middle of a very active development phase, working on a large amount of text related to in-game facilities and townspeople, while also struggling with creating the DLC scenarios.

There’s more text there but basically they’re currently focused on writing the dialogue for all the NPC’s and in-game books. The person responsible for the text in this game seem too passionate about their work though lol.

They start talking about how they had to “become a mother, a father, and a child” and how they thought they were hearing voices when working on this late at night by themselves.

The romance itself is optional but like the entirely confidant is creepy but is arguably the best gameplay wise to have as it allows you to use the night after you go into a dungeon.

Going back to Atelier Ryza 3 after playing a bunch of Zelda, I tried climbing walls and picking up logs. If anything though, I think it was impressive this game was able to trick my brain like that for a moment lol.

I’ve reached the 3rd map in the game. Really enjoying these expansive new maps. The first map is actually the entire map from Atelier Ryza 1, now without loading zones + an entirely new coral ocean area added to it.

Very Nice OT @saintsflow20

Scrolled it all today and notice most of the talk about titles/ series not on Xbox ? am I right?

Anyway good to see small JRPG community within Xbox fourms, I’ll vist this OT regularly : )

I finally finished Fire Emblem Engage. My final playtime was about 80 hours. Like I said when I got the game, I planned to play all the way through it with Japanese text, and I stuck with it. It took a while, was of course struggling at the start, took some long breaks, but eventually I reached the point where reading the game wasn’t that difficult anymore. It was the first long game I played through in Japanese without the help of an automatic machine translator (I did that for Kuro no Kiseki 2) or having played the game before (Ys Oath in Felghana, also a short game anyway).

I enjoyed seeing some things that are not possible with English text. For example in this scene [late game spoiler] Past Alear is speaking with hiragana only. I thought that really helped with making her seem like she is speaking “soullessly”. Made it difficult to parse what she was saying though, thankfully the devs must have knew that because other characters often repeated what she said but with kanji lol.

There is also Panette who speaks in an absurdly polite way. In this image, almost the entire second line is not actually even words, but are politeness modifiers (an amount you’d never actually see for real lol)

Anyway, as for the game, it was a lot of fun. My first Fire Emblem game. It was cool to see all those characters I only know from Smash Bros lol. There are optional stages where you fight against them to strengthen your bonds, you learn a little about the games they were from in them. I should check those out someday.

I also can’t compliment the graphics/artstyle enough. Such a good looking game, they used the Unity engine well. The pre-rendered cutscenes are also just stunning to look at.

Story was okay, had some great moments near the end. Villains were whatever though.

I don’t know how the gameplay compares to other FE games but I liked it. I was playing on Normal with no Permadeath though lol. Still, there’s very deep customization and the combat animations are very impressive. I also did a lot of the minigames and stuff you can do at your home base, so there’s some variety in there.

I’d say this game is an 8/10. Anyway, with this out of the way, now I can get back to Zelda, lol.

Hmmm very intersting. Hopefully true.

Kinda annoyed I just looked at a guide for Persona 4 Golden and I didn’t do the Jester Social Link to Rank 6 before Nov 1st. I wanted to max all my confidants in one playthrough.

Persona 5 Royal is easily the best Persona game and top 5 in my JRPG’s. Especially because I could get the 1000G on one playthrough.

Retro gaming time. Been playing Sakura Wars 2 on Saturn. After finishing FE Engage I felt confident enough to take on this and besides some military jargon in the beginning it’s been smooth sailing. I played the first one two years ago with an English patch and absolutely loved it, a completely “me” game. SW2 does not have an English patch (yet). I am enjoying the new battle presentation with the portraits displayed and the even flashier special moves.

Story already seems better than the first, and this one is three discs long (1st was 2).

My personal most wanted Sega retro ports. But the failure of the PS4 game and the gacha means it’s very likely not gonna happen :sob:

Was browsing the latest Xbox sale and saw Ni No Kuni 2. For whatever reason this game costs €90 !!! Yeah, it’s on Game Pass, but this doesn’t explain the price.
